Russia is conquerable. But it is a big mistake for Napoleon to not account for Russia's land mass and treating her like any other of his enemies in Europe. The land mass is the real killer, comparatively more harmful than General Winter. The land mass makes supply line incredibly difficult to maintain thus giving General Winter an acting hand in war.
To make this more simple there are only certain facts to consider, during Napoleon's time
to capture the City of Moscow was nothing to destroy the Armies were more important because they could live off the land not so when Hitler invaded because the Armies without
the great Cities like Moscow in an industrial age could produce the weapons of war for the Armies to survive.
It's funny tho how Hitler made the same mistake 230 years later and how Napoleon campaign were text book military campaign written in history. The Logistical problems were different but probably much bigger whit today military as someone well equipped whit winter clothing home fighting for his country whitout an ever stretching supply line tear up thru a military way faster on a constant front totally different from napoleon big battles fight.
@chrisrogerrabbit He was as much a tyrant as Czar Alexander or King George III. This was an age of absolutism, with the United States being the exception rather than the rule. As we have come to see, even the U.S. is succumbing to absolutism.
p.s. why do you all hat on NCWCS? he is right! Napoleon was a wonderful commander and a Genius! I wish to be like him too! I man who can and did Change History for forever! He fought for Security of France, and to protect his people. He wanted freedom for slaves and gave it to them. He did everything he could to easy pain on his people. he wasn't just a short guy who fought some battles. so @Drecksdusler, fuck you. ^^ and @NCWC2, :)
If Hitler had consolidated England and Northern Africa, his invasion of Russia would have been successful. You understand that whilst fighting a three front war ( El Alamein, Battle of Britain and Barbarossa), he was within 40 KM of Moscow. WAITING AND EXTRA COUPLE OF MONTHS WOULD HAVE SEEN MILLIONS OF MEN MOVE TO THE EASTERN FRONT AND HENCE RUSSIA ITSELF DID NOT STOP HITLER RATHER HIS STRATEGIC MISTAKE
i love the part where napoleon defeats the prussians man i really look up to the man a man who said " i want to have a france where nothing is impossible for anyone" :) i am a guy who feels it's dangerous to look up to any human being but napoleon is different he is someone you can actually learn from whenever you feel lifes impossible just see the things he did and how he cared for each and every induvidual
just because napoleon made a similar mistake to hitler does not make them alike Napoleon was very cleaver in his thoughts hitler was a damn fool who didn't know what he wanted in life
@redpaw550 oh please please don't spoil this movie for everybody with your german extremisim just scram we are all trying to watch a movie and have fun and have a good time and now this nazi cunt is gonna start shit with everyone cause thats wht nazis do GO AWAY i'm not even gonna reply to you leave me alone this is not a damn german shit movie this is an awsome french movie if you want hitler go somewhere else and leave us alone i'm a jew and french ok so don't talk to me
@mbarana100 So I am a nazi because I say Hitler was a great politician? Everyone knows Napoleon conquered Europe so he's a hero. Hitler conquers Europe but he is a damn fool? You are the cunt for not seeing the greatness of Hilter!
Now let's not forget you are starting a discussion about Hitler and you call me a Nazi?
Just because Hitler killed many people that doesn't mean he is an idiot.
You are a ignorant fool who does not know what he is talking about!
Many of Hitler's generals were great, not him. Later in the war many of his advisers and generals couldn't stand him because he would try to take over and make illogical moves. He was a great speaker and tactical political, but not a military man at all.
@mbarana100 PS i'm not a Nazi, I live in one of the countries occupied by the Nazis. My grandfathers worked in German labourcamps as slaves. You should be less arogant and first read a comment proper before placing a comment!
@redpaw550 napoleon is the greatest leader who ever lived he is the greatest warrior of all times TO HELL WITH POLITICIANS LIKE HITLER i feel you have insulted me who is jewish some of my family who died in world war 2 both on the lines and as prisoners your people who were enslaved but you have insulted napoleon who this movie is dedicated too by even mentioning hitler on this board forget hitler we don't want to here it CAN"T WE JUST WATCH A MOVIE We just the movie without modern extremisim
@redpaw550 Hitler was not a general, and his interfering with his generals is one of the reasons Germany lost the war with Russia.
The best determiner of a great general is "does he win the war?" Based on that, any top generals list must include Washington, Scott, Grant, Pershing, and Eisenhower.
@gtbkc Hitler behaved like a general though and for the first few years things went splendid. To determine a great general victory is not an all decisive criteria otherwise people like Napoleon and Rommel could never be counted in.
First few years were also again flimsy targets (France, Poland). Just because he "behaved" like one doesn't me he was one.He was an idiot (from a military stand-point), and his general staff didn't want him interfering simply because he had no idea what he was talking about
The Mongols are the only ones to have ever conquered Russia but then again they practised a scorched Earth tactic. They made pyramids of skulls and raised all cities who stood against them to the ground.
People exaggerate the winter a lot. Lice had much to do with all these casualties and so did the supply lines. If you have food and provisions then weather doesn't matter at all. Germans didn't lose ww2 because of weather, they lost it because they were outnumbered and resources were exhausted. Example--> Encirclement of stalingrad cut off supplies for the 6th army and they starved to death, they didn't really freeze to death (at least not most).
@LiveJoyDivision: Yeah but the russians had more men than the germans so encirclement would not have been too hard. The winter also slowed down troops and tanks and the german soldiers did not have proper winter clothes
@LiveJoyDivision You're right there, and while the cold may not have been the main cause of death. It most certainly would have been one of the main factors of demoralization. Not only would a lot of these men not have been use to that level of cold, but it would have also made their retreat much harder, with all the snow, ice, and mud.
@flamezero888 yep I completey agree with you there about supplies being harder to manuever. But it was the sheer manpower that destroyed the German forces, not the damn winter.
Rule 1, on page 1 of the book of war, is: "Do not march on Moscow". Various people have tried it, Napoleon and Hitler, and it is no good.-Bernard Montgomery
Most importantly, he didn't go there for the same reasons... There was some kind of naivety on his part in my view, the fact that he wanted to protect the Polish people from Russian invasion. And defend the values of the Republic there... Whereas Hitler just wanted to exterminate all Slavic peoples. No comparison at all can be made... But it was obviously Napoleon's worst decision that would prove strategically a huge defeat.
@Interdefineable hitler wanted to invade much earlyer so he wouldnt face winter .. but if y see the operation barbarosa was slowed down because of italy and bulgaria couldnt invade greece and he send a big percent of his army to invade greece... if y will go search what happened he send the biggest ammount of parachutists that ever was send to crete .. and that was a total dissaster and because of that he never sendet parachutist again.
@oortiz915 same tactical, strategical, and logistical mistakes, but totally different men. Napoleon was never a racist, or a bigot. Napoleon was a native of Italy in Corsica, and understood how it was to be a common person thats why the people supported him. Hitler was just plain nuts, a monster of a human being.
@hedonistic2008 I really can't compare Hitler to Napoleon. Hitler was a madman with no skill except in propaganda and charisma. Napoleon was everything a man could dream to be.
@Drecksdusler You obviously aren't a fan or admirer of this legend. And for your information, this is probably the most historically accurate portrayal of Napoleon I've seen yet on film.
No I'm obviously NOT a fan of absolutistic rulers who crown themselves king or emperor. I don't need a Führer to look up to. That's so last century! ;-)
@Drecksdusler I admit, I'm not a fan of all his decisions either *cough* Russian invasion *cough*. But you can't deny the guy was a brilliant stateman and even better soldier and leader.
It's not just the French and the Germans, who made a mistake of invading Russia, but also the Swedes and the Japanese (in 1920s).

600,000 men invaded Russia, less 93,000 would ever come back. Russia is an unconquerable wilderness.
I would never in my life compare his Imperial Majesty with the monster of Hitler, but he too would receive the same faith.
