  • thanks man im subscribing

  • How important woud you say is the quality of the table and cue's when attempting trickier shots. I play on some dodge tables and its hard to get the good shots right.

  • Very important, you need the table to be of quality otherwise what's the point, all that you do depends on the quality of the table.

  • im paused at 15 seconds. after seeing this easy pool trick at the beginning and being highly unimpressed that someone tried to impress me with this "trick" shot i am leaving and not watching the rest.

  • Thanks for watching but it's not about "Trick Shots" it's about learning basic techniques in pool playing, and if you have some awsome trick shots you would like share I suggest you do a "You Tube" Video - Good Luck!

    "Dean's Pool Tips"

  • thanks dean im just startin playin and this basic kinda stuff helps me out big time

  • i can tell by how you shoot that youre a great pool player. I am just curious why on the 3rd position tutorial you used back left. You could get the same position by cheating the pocket slightly. The only difference left or right english makes when contacting an object ball is the tiny squirt immediately after contact, and the amount that it curves after contact due to the english. It seems like this would confuse beginners. They only need to know about how english affects the rail for now.

  • Thank-you for pointing that out. This tip was probably a little advanced for the beginner, guess I got carried away. Thanks for noticing and keep watching Dean's Pool Tips

  • that was more helpful than all the videos ive seen!!

    thanks

  • It is flawed advice to state that left english causes the ball to draw back to the left off of a straight-in shot. What really happened is that the instructor cut the ball slightly to the right of the pocket (@ 2:28). Actually, you could position the cue toward the left with right english just as well... perhaps better, because right english will throw a straight shot to the left by several degrees (allowing one to hit the left side of the ball and still make the ball go straight ahead).

  • Thanks for noticing you have a great eye for detail. I'll have to go back and review the tip again.

    Dean

  • I cant never make the ball do the things you just showed I hit it in different area's and it just moves on its own will.. I might need a pool coach...

  • This tip was a bit advanced, don't worry, focus on the fundamentals, not the advanced tips, they will come with practice.

    Thanks for watching,

    Dean

  • question if your hitting the ball off center does that mean you have to also aim off center because when i hit the ball off center it doesnt go to were im aiming usually im really good at making balls in but when i try to put any type of english i completely miss

  • Aim straight for the pocket first then position the cuetip slightly to the left or right to create spin, but do not stroke off target. Thanks for watching.

    Dean

  • thanks for the tips dean they really help

  • Thanks I appreciate the nice comment.

    Dean

  • you are good, 5/5

  • Thanks man.

    Dean

  • Hi Dean,

I've been playing pool more over the past few months and I'm having problems putting english on a the cue ball but keeping my trajectory straight. I watched your vid on stroke technique and will try that out today.

For instance I have want to cut a ball into one of the middle pockets and have it end up to the right about a foot. Since my shot doesn't move in a straight line when I put english, I can't cut the ball into the pocket. Help is appreciated

  • Remember, when you line up your shot do not think about English, just line up the shot.

Now when you stroke, position the cuetip left or right from center of the cueball to create spin, but remember stay on target. Thanks for the comment.

    Dean

  • sweet thatl help a little...

i already know how to use enlish though....peace..

  • Don't abuse it man, shoot good pool and you won't need it.

    Thanks for the comment,

    Dean

  • Should I put a very soft leather cue tip on my cue for max english?

  • Yes it would help, but don't use this cue for breaking or jumping.

    Thanks for the comment,

    Dean

  • what a guy

  • thanks for the helpful tips

  • Your welcome... I'm glad they help

    Dean "Dean's Pool Tips"

  • Man, I've been trying to find videos all day that explain pool. Most of the videos I've watched are confusing and incorrect. Then I finally found your "stash" of videos. They are exactly what I was looking for. Thanks alot man.

  • Very Cool, first time I've heard "Stash" in a long time. I have a DVD our that explains more in detail and does show some tips not shown to the public.

thanks for watching.... good luck with the game

    Dean "Dean's Pool Tips"

  • Interesting video.

  • I hope some of the video were helpful, thanks for watching...

    Dean "Dean's Pool Tips"

  • I'm a beginner, and there seems to be a debate concerning the "angle of the cue", especially when talking about english. More specifically, should the cue be level (ideally)?

  • Yes, for accuracy the more level your cue is the better, but sometimes you don't have that luxury, maybe your shooting over another ball, this is a tough shot because of the angle of your cue.

Keep it level if you can.

    Dean "Dean's Pool Tips"

  • i watched alot of videos that teach ppls how to stand how to shoot how to aim this and that,,, if u can copy it great,, but dont force urself to much to be exactly the same,,,just feel comfortable the way u stand how u aim,,and pratice time go on u'll be good, with that position n how u make the shot..remember if u cant be like sullivan or jimmy white,,atkeast u can use ur pool skill to pick up girls or gamble with other pooler hehe...ps u might get laid too wakakaka

  • Thanks for the comment, my suggestion is do pay attention to the fundamentals of the game, then create your own style and play and make it your own, but keep it simple, don't complicate the game.

    Dean "Dean's Pool Tips"

  • was wondering if you have had much access to english/british style tables? and if you have how did you find the difference (ball and table size ect)...

  • Not really, when I was out visiting Dublin, Ireland and had the pleasure of playing some pool with some locals. I play on all size tables but my fav is the 9' pocket billiard table, plenty of room to play a good game of 9 ball, or maybe some straight pool etc...

    Thanks for watching

    Dean "Dean's Pool Tips"

  • awesome videos, sitting here with sand paper in hand, shaping a tip, watching this has made me realise that i may over do it on the the cue ball, i tend to go 2 or 3 tips lower at times... i think this has been causing jumps on contact with the target ball.. i think i just learnt something :) thank you (possibly to much pace on the cue ball was causing the jumps, as beer and pool go hand in hand in my local hehehe)..

  • Yes, you are correct, keep that tip position no more than 2 tips either way.

When causing the cue ball to spin in either direction you must have a quality tip, well chalked, to grab the cue ball and spin it, also push past the point of contact, this will cause more spin, keep your cue level and execute with some power, "Get out of the way" cause the cue ball is coming straight back.

    Good Luck!

    Dean "Dean's Pool Tips"

  • I have a quick question about using english. If you want to put english on your shot do you, with a right handed person, angle the cue by moving your right hand up, left or right, or do you move the whole cue a little so it is still straight on with the cue ball? does that question make sense? I hope so, if not, let me know and I will try to explain it differently.

  • Yes, you do move the "Whole cue a little so it is still straight with the cue ball" and yes your question makes perfect sense. remember to keep your cue level and straight at all times, more accuracy and better execution. If you angle your cue it should be because you can't shoot level, like shooting over another ball, tough shot.

    Good Luck

    Dean "Dean's Pool Tips"

  • Without being complicated, english is a term used when ever you create spin on the cue ball to munipulate its direction after rail contact, or to transfer spin to your object ball. Try hitting the cue ball with your cuetip 1/2" left from the middle into the rail, the cue ball will come off the rail sharp left because of the spin you created, that's english.

  • Very nice

  • Thanks

  • These are good tips. Im a beginner myself. I notice most good players just hit the ball dead on. I always try to figure out the angle of the shots. Which doesn't work out physic wise.

  • Good question; I call this "natural pool play" hitting the ball dead on, this would mean your position play is pretty much perfect, meaning you never have to use a lot of english or get yourself out of a mess. I only use english and other manipulating techniques to get myself out of a jam. like a jump shot, masse etc.. these types of shots are because I don't have a great shot on the table. I hope this makes sense to you, thanks for your comment.

    Dean - "Dean's Pool Tips"

  • But if instead you use bottom LEFT in the last shot that you took, INTEND to make the cue ball reach the drawn towards rail and get the left spin to make the cue travel in an intended direction. Try it.

  • Thanks, I'll give it a go...

    Dean - "Dean's Pool Tips"

  • Hey getlois, thanks for the tips. It seems that your use of right and left while drawing would produce minimal results in changing the direction of the cue ball after contact. I always got more results from rail english. If you use bottom right as you did in the last shot in this video, you will notice that if the cue ball reaches the rail you are drawing towards and contacts the rail, that the side inglish will cause the cue to travel OPPOSITE the direction you intended with right.

  • Normally you would be right, in this example I create some throw off the object ball, causing the cue ball to slightly change direction after contact, bringing it back to the left or to the right, being this is a straight in shot with no angle, kind of difficult if not executed properly.

    Thanks for your comments...

    Dean

  • thanks for the hardworks!

    new to pool xD

  • No problem, something I love to do is share some of the things I learned from the pro players I've been fortunate to know. Thanks for the comment

    Dean

  • Your welcome, thanks

  • Your Welcome....

Keep up the good work, if your here that means your practicing and getting better at the game... I'm I right?

    Thanks for watching...

    Dean "Dean's Pool Tips"

  • Finally some good pool videos on youtube. Most are then doing shots that will never be recreated. Just started playing pool a month ago. Watching these videos have really led me to most of my wins.

  • Love the position play demo, very good fundamentals and would teach a beginner quite a lot. Not so sure on the holding the cue

  • Yes, I agree this tip was not the way I wanted it but ran out of time. Next time I'll revise this tip on holding the cue. Do you have any ideas that may help in my next tip? Look forward to your answer -

    Thanks for your comment

    Dean

  • Very nice video, I'm a rookie in this so this is going to help me very much. Thank you a lot and have a happy holidays.

  • thx 4 posting

  • Thanks for your comment -

    Dean

  • dean,

why does my cue ball jumps whenever i attempt a draw shot?

  • Chalk up! and don't cue to low. Remember when you hit the cue ball, the cue tip must grab the cue ball surfact and push through enough to cause back spin, You will need a good stroke to do this. Try this hitting another ball about 6 inches away and hit the cue ball at different positions, 1-tip, 1.5-tip & 2-tip below center, chalk up and push through enough to cause back spin.

    Good Luck

    Dean

  • very nice video to set an example.. i need a video that tells us the vocab and the meaning followed by an example... i think that would be one of the first steps to teaching pool to a noob... how to speak it.. very nice video

  • Good video. I always wanted to learn how to use english in my shots. I never could make the cue ball roll back, I always just make it jump foward!

  • This is very common, mostly due to "no chalk" on your tip and stoke possibly being to low. Try 1 1/2 inchs below cue ball center, chalk up and picture your tip going through the cue ball about 1 inch, just enough to cause backward spin, get your cue out of the way because it's coming back.

    Good Luck

    Dean

  • i can't get the ball to roll backwards, any other tips? also, how do i use the diamonds on the rails on the table properly? thanks

  • Check out the answer just before this one, as for the diamonds, use them as markers on the table to guide you when shooting into the rails, I go more into this in my video's

    Thanks

    Dean

  • i'm a bit of a novice. I've played in the pool league for 2 seasons, in the first I won 0 games, in the second I won just short of half. This season i've won 1 and lost 1. But, i've looked at a few of your videos just today, and its opened my eyes to a hell of a lot- and definitely makes things simple. will get back to you if i win! keep up the good work!

  • Good Luck, hope you win

    Dean

  • Dean, sorry but your cue is jacked up.

A level smooth stroke makes cueball control much easier.

Also, I disagree on spinning the cueball for shape ( no rail ).

If you want to draw the cueball to your right, just hit the object ball a little to the right.

  • Thanks for four comments and you are correct, this would work as well, as for jacking up my cue, I was probably just showing off...lol -

Take Care and keep up the good work...

    Dean

  • For this shot you must have a very fast stroke, causing the cue ball to spin either bottom left or bottom right, if you have no stroke you can't perform this shot, this was not a masse or elevated cue shot, which video were you watching?

Just to clear up a few things

  • I notice you use a closed bridge in all your subsequent shots, it must obviously mean it's more reliable. I'm an open bridge player, and when I struggle trying to maintain stability when using closed-bridge. I guess it will take a while? But I couldn't really get a clear shot at how you hold it that way.

  • What ever feels right, open or closed is ok as long as your cue does not move off guide when you execute your stroke a closed bridge secures your cue from moving off guide.

    Good Luck

    Dean

  • yesterday was one of my first time playing pool--just got one in my house,

so im glad u got these videos up, cause im gona need them if i wana even think about beating my grandpa when he comes up here

  • You shouldn't say that there isn't any cue ball control with a open bridge because many of the best players in the world play with an open bridge and they have great control.

  • You are correct, I wanted to take this shot over again but they wouldn't let me.... lol

    Thanks

    Dean

  • hey is ur website called deans pool tips? ill try it anyways

  • great video man.... I'm just begining to be good enough to start putting some english on the cue to set up for my next shot and this vid helped me out ty!

  • That's great man! Keep it up and remember to practice! Keep watching and if you want tips that you can't get here check out my website. I've got a DVD out now with some new tips!

  • Great videos. They've helped me become a great player. I just have one question. Is it true that a cue stick with a rounder tip is better than one that isn't?

  • what size table it that dean ?

  • Hey thanks for watching. It's a 9' regulation table.

  • Thx for the videos, they helped me allot, didnt play for a few years

  • It would have been nice to see top-left, mid-left, top, mid-right and top-right english here as well.

  • Thanks for that. I'm going to be shooting some new tips and will include your suggestion!

  • that shot at the begining where there cue rolled off the stick to nock the ball in the pocket was pure skill

  • Nice video. I've been involved with billiards the last two years. I've mostly just learned by playing a lot, I haven't mastered many of the simple tips like shown here. I will remember these tips and start working on how to properly place the cue ball where I want it.

    TY

  • i didnt play poole for about 3 years but i was bragging to some mates i would beat em.

I spend a few hours watching ur vids, and i did pretty well, most wins actually.

The Mental part also helped me allot, normally i wouldnt remember this halfway in the game.

The english went well, and i got some crazy shots with the rails.I used the cue to meassure the middle as u did.

So thx mate, u saved me ;)

  • GREAT Vid Helped ALOT i finally know what was wrong with my playing! i wasnt thinkin bout the next shot ur vid helped me realise that so ty!

  • Great, the key to the whole game is planning your next shot (Position) - Try 3 balls at a time when setting up each shot, practice this until your tip falls off - good luck

    Dean

  • Don't listen to these ammatuers Dean. Nothing wrong with your videos. Sometimes its good for everyone to go back to basics. Keep up the good work and keep posting!

  • Thanks -

  • i learned all that stuff on my own. im a pool nerd.

    ~homoklrr~

  • Thanks for watching, if you learned anything here then great, these tips are for begging pool players and they may not know how to draw, follow throught etc... there is always something new to learn, that's what I love about pool.

  • Hey Dean. What are some other ways I can get the cue ball to spin at a more rounded angle? Perhaps at shooting in a difficult spot where I can't touch the opponent's ball, where it's in danger of falling in.

And this is the first time I've seen your videos..

I'm highly impressed and learned quite a few new things.

    Thanks.

  • I think I understand the question, are you trying to shoot around your opponents ball to hit yours? please explain?

    and thanks for watching

    Dean

  • wow, i was doig the bridge techinique totally wrong thanks again dean

  • hey Dean. do you have any tips on how to practice by yourself? should I play 9 ball? or maybe some type of game that is good practice?

good work on your vids. its helping a lot.

  • Yes, I have a great game thats fun to play.

I play "Rotation" this game racks almost the same as "8-Ball" but for practice I wont get to much into the rules. Put your 15 ball where the 8-Ball would go, this will be your last ball. Shoot the one ball thru the 15 ball, remember to position after every shot. Good Luck and thanks for your comment.

    Dean

  • great vids. u keep my attention unlike many other pool vids i have watched. ty

  • i play a lot of pool at my work and i look forward to putting to use what i have seen with the dimond system and the stance and stroke video, also when and where might i find your pool tips dvd??

    nick from ohio

  • Wow these videos are great! thanks Dean. Are there any tips you can provide for tough "angle shots", as I call them? Where you have to hit the cue ball to a certain side of the object ball?

    Thanks!

  • hi i love the videos!!! it has really helped me with my game. can you please make a video on the masse shot.thanks alot

  • We just uploaded a new clip on the Masse shot. Thanks so much for watching!

    Dean

  • Great videos man. Can you post a video detailing shots that are attached to the rail and the Q ball is at say 30, 45 or 60 degrees from it? Thanks

  • Yes, I plan to include "Rail Shots" in my next video, this shot comes up all the time and it's important to know how to shoot this shot. Just for practice, try hitting this shot with soft "Top English" and hit the rail and the object ball at exactly the same time, you will find this shot will drop every time. Be looking for "Rail Shots" in the next set of "Dean's Pool Tips" and thanks for your comment.

    Dean

  • Hey man just a question. If you are going to play pool, as opposed to snooker, you need a cue stick with a larger tip. Am I right? I'm using a 9mm tip for pool but I believe it is too small. Can you let me know your thoughts? Thanks

  • It shouldn't matter, as long you feel comfortable with your existing cue. I play with a Viking Cue and just had the shaft and tip narrowed, I have a little more accuracy with a smaller tip and thinner shaft. You may want to ask a snooker player what he or she thinks, but that's my opinion.

    Good Luck

    Dean

  • nice man your good im just starting to play and loving it

  • nice video :)

  • thanx for the video, I improved my game by a factorial of 85%. i am now winning more often than before.

P.S. never tell your friends about this video!!

  • Probably the most important part of my game is "Being Comfortable" this has a lot to do with "Body Position" if you are lined up with the shot your stance, stroke and execution will feel natural, and yes you will make the shot - Neve Second Guess Your Shot when down in stroke position, if you change your mind back off the table and start over...

    Good Luck with your game

    Dean -

    Dean's Pool Tips

  • dude im good but i wasnt good with english and your vids are helping me to improve with better english

  • Great! remember when hitting the cue ball with inglish start with slight adjustments from the center of the cue ball out toward the edge and always chalk before each hit, good luck

    Dean

  • Wow sir, after i watched this video I went dbl hill with efren, but scratched on the break ty man ty

  • Man you are just too helpful.

Despite my name, I assume you know my age, and guess what, after watching this, I beat my father 4-2.

Knowing how to use English now, I've done backspins a lot when I hit directly straight into a pocket. If I did not watch this, The cue would have went directly in to the pocket.

    Thanks man.

    -shadow

  • After watching these videos, I played with my friends and won four in a row! Thanks man, this helped me a lot. I can sink more balls in than I use to.

  • Very Cool! I'm glad your game is improving and winning more games.

    Keep up the good work...

    Dean-

    "Deans Pool Tips"

  • very nice, love your videos. keep up the good work!

  • Thanks for watching, I hope you found something to improve your game. We are producing more video clips in the next couple weeks and I hope you get a chance to watch them, if you send me a comment, let me know if there is something you would like me to focus on to improve your game.

Thanks again and have a great Week-End!

    Dean

  • Nice work Dean. This is one of those "you've got to try it to believe it" shots. It's tough to execute with any precision, but it's a useful. You might point out that the right or left change in direction on the draw shots isn't due to the spin alone, but rather a combination of spin and the downward angle of the cue. If you hit that same shot with a perfectly level cue, it would draw straight back. That's impossible to do over the pocket like that, so you end up hitting a slight draw/masse.

  • Very nice comment and you are correct, the hit is just like a masse I happened to call it Extreme English for players who may not be familiar with the term "Masse". I have some new tips coming out soon and I will concentrate on "How to keep things simple" in the game of Pool, sometimes we have the tendency to make things "Complicated" Yes, I've done this many times, but at least I know how to get back basics, this is so important especially when you gain some knowlege. Keep up the good work!

  • thanks for the videos - one question is how to get heaps of draw so the cue ball actually slows down and then accelerates backwards?

  • Good Question... hmmm "Heaps of draw". The Cue Ball doesn't actually slow down before hitting your Object Ball, you will need "heaps" of reverse rotation on the cue ball after the hit, this will cause the Cue Ball to draw back as far as necessary. Your "Stroke" & "Hit" and don't forget to "Chalk-Up" is very important especially for this shot. Practice this shot at close range, Good Luck!

    Dean

  • thanks man, ur never 2 old 2 learn somethin'

  • Absolutely - Keep it fun and win a few in between!

Keep a look out for our new tips in the next few weeks, I have a few tricks up my sleeve

    Take Care

    Dean

  • Simple, concise, and entertaining to watch. Thanks a lot for the tips!

btw, that trick shot at the beginning was sweet...

  • Did I say "Thanks" nice comment and I hope you are having fun with the game and getting better at the same time.....

    "Dean's Pool Tips"

    Dean

  • Your Welcome, and no I don't know Emile Riera.

    Thanks

    Dean - "Dean's Pool Tips"

  • hey do u no emile riera? thanx for the tips

  • Putting bottom + side does not change the path of the cueball before contacting the cushion. Sidespin only takes effect when after the cueball hits a rail, and causes the cueball to come off at a shorter or wider angle.

  • You must hit the Cue Ball very hard bottom left or right so when is jump back from the object ball it still has left or right draw spin, otherwise you are right, nothing will happen, you will only draw straight back - Don't be afraid to hit the cue ball hard with bottom left or right, let me know if this works.

    Good Luck - Dean

  • Why would you teach people to use english for shape off of a ball without contacting a rail that's silly. Just tell them to cheat the pocket with draw to achieve that location.

  • You are correct, if you have a pocket you can cheat then cheat it, some tables have tight pockets and there is no room to cheat, so only under these circumstance I have had the need to control the cue ball, this is not easy to do when you are straight in, but I am able to change the direction of my cue ball by using hard right or left draw, again this shot is hit hard with extreme spin to the left or right otherwise the cue ball will draw straight back.

  • Hi!!! I don't speak english very well, but i have a question.

I never played pool in my life, i always wathed the others play. Now, some guys invite me to play, because i said them, that i know how to play. And now i'm wathing videos and reading in web pages, some technicals to construct the bridge, and i'm practising without pool table. Do you think i can make a worthy part ???

    Thanks !! Bye !!

  • Yes, you will find that people who play pool are very helpful and will be glad to show you how to form your bridge and stroke the cue stick. Watch the more experienced players and learn from them, you will be amazed how much you will learn just by watching.

Good Luck - I'm sure you will do fine

    Dean

  • Thanks man! please post more videos like this one. A lot of guys like me will b thankful. Please post more. Thanks.

  • Your Welcome.... I plan to post more useful tips, I'm trying to start with the basics, these are based on questions players ask me all the time. I want to get more into tips that help you win the game and excercises that you can used everytime your practicing technique..... Good Luck with your game and be looking for more tips...

    Thanks

    Dean Von

  • thanks agen and hope u knw that ur videos means a lot to us..dn listen to da haterz..

  • That's awesome man, thanks alot. Just remember to practice. That's what it's all about.

  • thanks for the comment, stay in touch I would like to know how your game is coming along.

    Good Luck

    Dean "Dean's Pool Tips"

  • Wow, i always wondered how the pros would be able to make the ball spin left or right while still making the other ball go straight, thats really cool. Cant wait to get a table

  • When you are practicing english start with slight cue tip moves from the center of the cue ball e.g. 1/2 cue tip in either direction, see how the cue ball reacts after hitting another ball. First you must be sure your fundamentals are in place, stance, stroke position, and finally your stroke! Watch the pro's and focus on their stroke, you will pick up some valuable tip's - Thanks for watching my tips, they will only add to your game.....

    Sincerely,

    Dean Von

  • Thank-you! We'll be posting new tips soon. I'm glad that I could help. Keep checking back and go to mypooltv

  • Quality tips! Just wanted to let you know those past two minutes have improved my playing technique!

  • what size table is that? because im thinking of buying one for my self

  • 9' regulation size, you may find a used one around $1,500 - $2,500 - Good Luck!

  • thanks man i played a game of pool with my friend and i bet 5 bucks and i won thanks to you man

  • Congradulations! I'm sure you already have what it takes to win, these tips may have just added to your game, keep up the good work -
