In one of my MM books (either The Secret Life of Marilyn Monroe or Fragments; can't remember which), it says that Arthur wrote in his journal that he thought Marilyn was a bitch and was embarrassed to be around her. And he left his journal OPEN WHERE MARILYN COULD SEE IT. Poor Marilyn...she never felt loved. :(
If some conspiracy killed MM it was her protection of Miller. He used women and looked so down on them. She really was a Civil rights worker, but he was NOT. He really contributed to her emotional downfall by condeming her with his words. Look at The Misfits. It was rewritten while filming because he wrote an awful script about his own wife. Read about the real Miller. O'neil,Williams..he will never be.
a J. Edgar Hoover collaborator purely out of greed and cowardice.
his FBI meal-ticket was to alienate marilyn's friends, many black musicians or artists like Dorothy Dadgrige and Ella Fitzgerald
and to convince her into movies she didn't want to do directed by other FBI collaborators like Wilder. she hated the Some Like It Hot script and didnt think it was plausible enough to be funny.
she said, how is it that a woman could room with two men in drag and believe they were real girls?
@Hans021220 I don't remember, however there's another Marilyn Monroe documentary on youtube that reveals her Mom's name. I think it was an Intimate Potrait episode.
read in a book somewhere that when they both got divorced, Arther Miller return to where they live, to pack his stuff and left the house for the final time. Marilyn knew he would be back, but she just stay in another room until he left the house. She went over to the room she used to share with Miller, everything has being taken and clear except a photo of Miller and her. I guess it said alot indirectly.
he should have just let marilyn take a dam photo with him. good lord.. but i see it was the principal of it. you see how she walks fast past him. she really didnt want to be seen with him. Body language. when people are in love and want to be seen they walk together, hold hands, they want everyone to know. But she hurried past him. walking separately..I am sure she may have just got sick of everyone. Today I was thinking of her. She was a goddess
it is almost a JOKE that he was even married to her. Dimaggio I can understand but in reality ... two people both powerhouses and she was not going to be a mommy. She probably just needed to have kids.. That takes a lot of womens emotions off themselves and on the kids.
Marilyn paid all of Arthur's lawyer bills from him being investigated under the HUAC back in the 1950's. Seems like all Arthur could do is badmouth her the rest of his life. Wrote two plays that were really derogatory to her. Someone else posted that Joe DiMaggio was a class act by not talking about Marilyn to the public. I completely agree with that post. Miller just made himself look worse by trashing Marilyn every time he had the chance. I have no respect for Arthur Miller.
sylvia plath dreamt that marilyn and arthur visited her and ted hughes - sylvia had a sharp subconscious.
two female American artists betrayed by the men they loved and by the artistic community at large that collaborated with their defamation as punishment for their pro-civil rights beliefs.
they were both particularly bashed by the sht-eating fake feminist community controlled by the FBI and CIA.
he was a formulaic affected writer with little insight into people, especially women.
a little like woody allen, full of neurosis and bourgoise hang-ups, that betrayed their education. it's hillarious that he says Marilyn was as smart as anybody else.
first, she was smarter than most, more hard working and accomplished, and she was certainly smarter and more courageous than you during very dangerous times, you fcking coward.
i think people need to stop bashing arthur miller. he loved her just like a lot of other people and he didnt use her for anything. and i didnt know he wasnt at the funeral but i doubt he chose not to attend. Joe Dimaggio arranged the funeral and very few people were allowed to go and i doubt dimaggio wanted arthur miller there. he definitely loved her a lot. dont bash him
he kept on killing her. hoover and 20th Century Fox told him to write "after the fall" and he did it.
and the main reason hoover killed her was for doing the birthday party thing. which she mainly did to prove that miller like most mainstream liberals are fascist cowards in disguise.
Norma-Jean thought that the only threat for attending the JFK bash was the shut-down of SGTG and defaming in the media because she didn't realize Hoover was completely insane by then and that he'd kill her.
WE ALL KNOW THAT THE SACRATES BOOKS WERE STOLEN AND QUOTTED ONLY BY THE COPYRIGHTS OF JEWS AND THE ONE PAYRIGHT IS THE MOSSAD TO SEE HIM AS THE FRONT TO KEEP ALL THE JEWS IN THE LIGHT OF THE BLONDE
a man who couldn't give any of his female characters humanity or dimension. every female character is either a non-flesh made angel or a demon.
how much do you want to wager that watts is going to sell more industry trashing of norma-jean with a movie that sells miller as a wonderful guy and victim of his meal-ticket wife who kept feeding his bank account even post-humously.
more propaganda to hide the fact that miller was unemployable under hoover and he used marilyn as his meal-ticket, got on hollywood payroll to betray her and never loved her.
and even when she was dead, he didn't stop making money off her and pissed on her grave.
This man was the worst thing that could happen to Marilyn. A man who used her and destoyed her emotionally. He posed as a very intellectual type but was cold, indifferent, unable to give love to her. She saved him through hard times and paid all his expenses. When she needed him, he left her. He didn't even attend to her funeral by saying "Why? Anyway, she's not there anymore.."
@Lisajreed Your understanding of events couldn't be more wrong. In Marilyn's own words: "some of those bastards in Hollywood wanted me to drop Arthur. Said it would ruin my career. They're born cowards and want you to be like them. One reason I want to see Kennedy win is that Nixon's associated with that whole scene".
a woman as beautiful as Marilyn was,,, she married men like Arthur Miller and Joe DiMagio??? these were NOT good looking men. was she, perhaps looking for a father figure??
Americans create super heroes, super stars, super everything, then feed them very well their neuroses and then want them to be seen as normal. They still have a heart but completely tormented and reason ... ruined ...
Miller shows the narcissist's total inability to see Monroe as a person in her right. She only exists in his imagination in relation to him. No empathy,no awareness. Once she turned from sensual object into difficult, flawed human being,he wanted no part of her. This happened time again with Monroe's lovers. Once they got to see her damaged psyche behind the amazing beauty of her form, they lost interest. She needed a man who saw Norma Jean for herself, not a fantasy or object to save or mould.
Dude, I happen to be a psychologist and let me tell you that living with a person with a very flawed psyche is very difficult. Only the greatest and most patient men can live with it; so I wouldn't really blame Miller or her other lovers. IT is very difficult to endure.
Too bad MM isn't around to contradict or comment on this crap. I wonder, did Miller get paid for this interview. After all, he only had one broadway hit.
If it weren't for MM, Miller would have faded as a guy who wrote one good play. He was horribly overrated - especially by his own self. MM wanted credibility. It didn't turn out that way - during her lifetime anyway.
thats bull he's a great playwright have you evan read any of his plays from studying a view from the bridge at college ive read three great plays of his
@kimmypett What a shallow analysis. You have an overrated sense of self-importance when, in actuality, you are simply a gossip. For anyone else reading these comments, know that Miller was well respected and, in fact, on May 1, 2002, Miller was awarded Spain's Principe de Asturias Prize for Literature as "the undisputed master of modern drama". I'm sure this will have no meaning to kimmypett and others like kimmypett. Please don't let people like kimmypett influence you.
@kimmypett From my understanding, Authur Miller wrote more than just "one good play". Have you watched MM's last movie The Misfits? Miller wrote the screenplay and it's one of the most affecting and unsettling human dramas I've ever watched. Just sublime.
@kimmypett Miller wrote one good play? Which one would that be? The Crucible? All My Sons? Death Of A Salesman? A View From The Bridge? The Price? All multi-award winning plays, each of which would have been career-defining for any other playwright. I find Miller's achievements far more impressive than Monroe My only criticism of Miller is that he collaborated in this ludicrous idea that MM was some kind of artist and deep-thinker, rather than a beautiful woman and so-so actress.
all the women in his work are demons or unearthly angels. a misogynist pig who couldn't write a female character with reality and dimension to save his life.
@kimmypett I don't agree, he's written several more than one great play: Death of a Salesman, Focus and the Crucible to name just three. How much of his work have you read?... not to say that your not entitled to your opinion of course, it's just that I do not share it.
Wow, this is reallly interesting hearing in Miller's own words. I just read Barbara's Leamings biography of Monroe and she talks about precisely what Arthur is talking about here. Fascinating.
Don't you think MM brought problems on herself with her behavior and treatment of others? Although not a Miller fan I think it's unfair to blame him. It's been well documented that she was an emotional vampire. I figure she gave as good as she got.
I've read a few but not many. Mostly I've picked up things about her from documentaries. From what I can tell though, I don't think Monroe could spell the word love. I'm no psychiatrist but it appears the only emotion Monroe experienced was obsession (about everything including herself) and that's just not the same thing as love. Who knows. I never met the woman. But from what I can tell, she was no picnic and I dont' romanticize the kind of behavior she exhibited. I've been around it.
I don't think that is really fair. They cheated on each other, they hurt each other it just doesn't like a fair thing to claim that Miller was the "worst". I think mismatch would be a better description
