  • lamb of god font!!!

  • never use comic sans!

  • i know you werent trying to make it amazing like your other videos but this is just my opinion, i love your tutorials but i had to make a magazine cover in my digital basics class (note- basics) and i made a better magazine cover.

  • Very nice tutorial, thank you!

  • I have a question regarding using the Type tool.

When I start using my Type tool to write stuff, once I reach the end of the line, the text starts jamming over itself instead of normally jumping to a second line, hence making the words unreadable. Is there a way to fix that? It has been bugging me for so long, I hope someone is familiar with the problem and could help me, I would really appreciate it.

  • love it

  • Thank you. That was very helpful. Did you just copy a UPC from somewhere?

  • When I saw the thumbnail, I thought it was Maureen McCormick (Marcia Brady)!

  • im new to this but shadow dropping seems t o be a bit takky, is it really worth using @ all or was that just to put an idea out there for those who thought about it or what was the point. just to make a statment about that word on the cover pls explain more detailed pls. awsome vid. by the way

  • Justine !!!!!

  • We have done magazine covers before but now we will try again with some new skills.

  • I paused the video randomly then i saw the word "Manila" in the magazine. That means That magazine is from my country. HAHA.

  • can we still post examples?

  • Howard is cool. He helps a lot!

  • nice tut man. but who's the ugly bitch? her face is curly.

  • TITS! haha

  • you shouldn't post training, you need training yourself, both techincal, and especially some art training... pros don't do typography is photoshop dude, its either indesign or illustrator, and nobody with at least a hint of taste would use that font for a title, or use the crap generic filter shadow.

  • @ytcrapster Illustrator? Heck, Photoshop is still far better for typography than Illustrator, unless your planning on actually making fonts.

Sure, is InDesign better for major typography work? Definitely. Can it still be done in Photoshop? Of course, everything that can be done in InDesign can be done in Photoshop too, it might just be a bit more difficult to do it, or take longer time. But for merely a cover, its a perfectly viable option.

  • @TokyoZeplin Ok, try setting text on a path in photoshop or flow text thru boxes... for example. I guess your an amateur / hobbyist, you clearly have little to no idea about DTP.

  • @ytcrapster Actually I'm taking my masters in Visual Communication at the Danish Design School. But whatever. And you can easily put text on a patch in Photoshop, what's the problem? Not entirely sure what you mean by "flow text thru boxes"

  • Papyrus would work with outdoor magazines and tropical stuff. Barcode is distracting and should be on the back.

  • iJustine....nice....

  • "Never use Papyrus." - Didn't tell the art department of AVATAR that tidbit. Look where it got them. (much heart, great videos.)

  • i add drop shadow in mine

  • lol teats

  • IJUSTINE !!

  • very helpful thanks.

Best tutorials for Photoshop on the web.

  • plz plz plz never use photoshop seriously to compose a magazine cover. if your going to do it seriously use indesign... allows you to pre press everything

  • chill out drama queen ;p its just a fucking tutorial.

  • @omgzJENNA

    Very Well Said..

  • pre press?

  • eeeerm to set up as pdf... and trap colours allow for bleed etc...

  • Ijustine!! :D

  • hahaha

  • Great andnice job very detail but yet to try this out. Definitely will try this. But first must get to your tutorial on Chroma Key in deleting background.

    Thanks for sharing.

  • wooow.thanks for the tips! i'll use this for my project. XD

  • I looove Youu

  • That was great,well explained

  • Great

  • amazing

  • By the way the magazine cover entitled preview was excellent.

  • Having said that, this video does not show how he masked that image in the first place. I am haing terrible trouble maskling out an image with precision. Even after changing the RGB value the magic wand still leaves a white edge. And if this happens, the photo editing software is useless . So what am i doing wrong? Is it because i am using a inferior photo editor in corel paint house pro? Somone help please.

  • ha ha take ur time if u have to take more then what ur trying to get that way later on if u need u can trim in out with the eraser tool or something lol it works rather well

  • Use the pen tool, when you select it click the paths button. it looks like a square with smaller squares on the corners. then trace around your object and right click then make selection or something like that.

    hope you understand, C'ya

  • you can trace the edge with the pen tool select that then cut it out. pen tool goes more into detail. Or if a white layer it left you can throw a white [or whatever color the edge is] behind it

  • I have never been able to do this kind of masking so this has been a great help.

  • 5:05 lololol

  • 1:43 ROFL

  • LOL

  • Basic tips in magazine design, done nicely. However, I could not understand on why Papyrus (Pah-py-rus) should not be used. It is an Egyptian style font and does it bring a curse with it? Sort of like the Mummy's curse? Maybe because it is not legible and has holes in it (like cheese), do mention what / why should designers stay away from using Papyrus.

    Thank you.

  • Papyrus is a very ugly and usually hard to read font. Very bad choice for professional work.

  • @IceflowStudios papyrus is easy to read its great for fantasy work like the avatar poster the font their using is papyrus

  • @tangkag879 Avatar was slammed by almost every designer on the planet for it's used of Papyrus. Considering the insane budget for the film, they could have more than easily had a font comissioned specifically for it rather than using some crappy unprofessional font.

  • Papyrus is overused frequently and many people are tired of it/think it's ugly.

  • ij and animoto ftw :D

  • iJ!

  • it's amazing lesson thank you ...

  • is he using adobe photoshop cs3?

  • LMAO u said pahpyus not the way you pronounce it.

  • "My black background is..black" lolz

about papyrus, whats wrong with it ? i use it on msn :S

  • Thank you!!!

  • ijustine!!! :D

  • haha teats

  • great tutorial, but inDesign would be better and more powerful in designing covers ;)

  • Excellent job, Howard as usual

  • I want to make a magazine cover... and frame it! So I can look cool. lol

  • lmfao "never use papyrus. you'll get nowhere in life." that made me die laughing. i love your tutorials, i think they're the best on youtube.

  • iJustine on the cover of Teats magazine... in the back row, wrapped in plastic

  • LOL i noticed that too... worst, most overused font ever

  • JUSTINE !

    (:

    Nice tutorial

  • the girl in the magazine is Lucy Torres-Gomez from the philippines!!!

  • Yes your right!hahaha..

  • Papyrus (pronounced /pəˈpaɪrəs/) ie. PA-PIE-RUS

"First manufactured in Egypt as far back as the third millennium BC[2] In the first centuries BC and AD, papyrus scrolls gained a rival as a writing surface in the form of parchment, which was prepared from animal skins." Wikipedia....

  • Man, I love these videos. It makes it so easy.
