  • I would love to try this. One of the hardest parts of therapy is figuring out exactly how I feel and why. Mostly I 'just feel like crap' or 'sad' etc. and I couldn't tell ya why.

  • I think you are on to something of value and importance, I tried to end my life unsuccessful like most things in my life, I play music to release what I feel inside, one of the first songs I listened to that hit home for me is by Jack Johnson it is called all at once, I learned the song and play it almost every day, Like you said it is a lot of minor chords and the lyrics explain how I feel most days. I think you should learn this song for people that have tried to commit suicide.

  • With my depression none of the music I like to listen too is not satisfying to me any more

  • Thank you for uploading this.. This is what I want to do in life- Help people through sadness with music..<3

  • I am a guitar teacher and found this video very insightful and helpful! And I kept thinking of how David played he harp for King Saul and it calmed him - I think music does have a power to calm us and sooth our soul

  • 15 people are stress while watching this video.. :D

  • music heals

  • A simple foundation with a colorful voice. Nice alchemy.

  • I used to be very depressed for years then i started to pickup girls and have a lot of sex then all depression went away. Now even in hard times i can find peace when i know i will have some sort of sex activity soon. Cool huh?

  • @mjshikeli i will pray for you my friend....after we leave this body where will you go?

  • I just partially listened to your advise. I like it just fine, but I'm interested in just a "back"sound of music to inspire an adolescent (M) to able to "talk his problem out " He's a foster child and now that he's 14 years old (last month) he suddenly has got to be rebellious . I say back sound which will accompany my counselling already written-up. He likes the drums, also natural sounds which I've already introduced and he was pleased, but "no talking "thanks

  • Ignore these stupid comments. I think what you do is quite remarkable. Not everyone will like you but it doesn't matter. Keep doing what your doing.

  • Im depressed cuz my mom circumsized me an now i cant find a lady to love me and my scar. An my lonely heart dies of sadness, do you have a song to make me feel better?

  • I used to be very depressed and I have social anxiety. I am a Christian but contrary to what some beleive that doesn't fix things. It's not supposed to. However I love music and I believe that music can help people deal with a lot of problems.. I broke up with a gire once and became obseesed with "the autumn leaves" but I will love her always even though I will no longer emotionally connect

  • this was really good

  • Good Idea.

  • when she sings, she doesn't look professional anymore. she looks like a hippy.(:

  • Guantanamo Bay could use this Lady.

  • ...some voice!

  • lady your of shit

  • sing some diamanda galas

  • Quote - Faithless "It's in minor keys, solutions and remedies. This is my church. This is where I heal my hurts."

  • I actually hope you'll consider doing another video or two on this. I can really relate to the subject and would love to know more. Music has always been a crutch for me throughout my life, but I've noticed that within the past year or so I have a hard time being attached to anything at all in particular. It's almost like I've lost interest, which is not at all like me - I've always loved music, especially when times are hard. I believe it's my depression/mental health that's caused this change.

  • lol therapist?

  • This is so awesome. I never knew musical therapy existed. I found myself in the hospital the way you described and would have loved to have you come see me. Your understanding of mental illness is very encouraging.

  • i think i would need a ful orchestra, if i was ever to need musical therapy

  • :/

  • interesting

  • this was one of the best SNL skits from the past few years... oh wait... this is real? ;)

  • @IanJudge ignorant

  • Respond to this video... I wish people with nothing but ignorant comments would stay away. Mental health is on the rise in a big way and music therapy is just one of many ways to help people. Thank you for posting this video.

  • play something for the criminal minded in government please.

  • WOW - nice voice, that was so nice to hear,

  • i enjoyed this

  • my best friend wants to be a music therapist

  • all due respect , i have never heard of so much crap, this form of therapy is upside down rubbish

  • @htltka For many people music instills a great deal of emotion. It may not be something you understand. But as you can see from the other comments there are many people who do. Go troll somewhere else.

  • @smilehimself I have never been called a troll before , My thoughts came from the heart and having imagined myself in the situation that was described as being most helped by the type of music that was played , I personally felt that her ideas were based on a kind of justification for her theory, not on real world logic, You help the patient most by making them feel LOVED, anyhow sorry if I offended

  • @htltka Her ideas are actually based in scientific fact, not theory. Music therapy is an established profession that requires years of study and training. Calling it rubbish is ridiculous. There's a huge amount of data that confirms that music therapy works.

  • I didn't know there was such a thing. This is interesting; an interesting way to try & write something too. If someone was laying in bed and just recovering from a failed suicide attempt, I'd play almost any Leonard Cohen song. that wd go along w/helping me heal. Also, Sister Morphine by the Rolling Stones wd start me feeling better right away. Also, if you were hot and took off ur top, that wd be good too.

  • smoke one

  • Some therapists are just obnoxious. Therapists loooove money!

  • @quartercherries and some are really loving, kind, and help people. therapists looooove people!

  • I perfer BEER therapy, It makes me feel better.

  • it's not about whether she's your favorite recording artist :) It's more about a backdrop for the depressed person to work with-

  • but first it would be nice if you could sing;)

  • Good job :).... constructive criticism: try about half the vibrato you used in this video and try to be a little more legato with it.

  • I am depressed because I can't play guitar as well as I would like.

    What would you suggest?

  • @Darkhorse21x how about practice? :p

  • @BellaLunaJessalynn

Ok. I think I will start with the Blue Oyster Cult Classic, Don't Fear The Reaper....

    It's one of my favorites. x )

I am feeling better already.....Hey, this stuff really works.

  • hm

  • i experience bouts of depression from time to time... i use upbeat music to elevate my mood... it takes no more than 15-20 minutes at most... this was an excellent video, thank you for sharing this with us...

  • I would probably want to kill myself if this lady came into my psyche room.

  • No offense, but if I was depressed and suicidal the last thing I would want to hear is that song. It's way too simple and feels very superficial.

  • @tranquil87 Yeah, I think she should do Pinball WIzard. Seriously, music therapy is a great idea, but goodness, you've got to personalize the experience and make sure the therapee (channeling Rowan & Martin) is comfortable with the style being presented. If I was recovering from an illness, and someone played what she is playing, a dreadful Dm Am chord progression, I would throw the guitar out the window. Or maybe pick it up and "play a song and make it snappy."

  • @tranquil87 hahaha,thats gas,youre actually right!

  • @tranquil87 I'm often depressed and a song I can relate to about feeling all alone is nice.

  • @tranquil87 actually the technques sh is using is proven to be effective, just saying

  • @tranquil87ok that's not the point. she's telling you that a music therapist would figure out your music preferences first, which she can't do for you as an anonymous internet audience. she's chosen a reasonable song and is making the point that after a music therapist figures out what kind of music a client likes (which is fine if it's not this song) the music therapist will engage the listener more by listening to their reactions, getting them to fill in lyrics, playing an instrument, etc.

  • @tranquil87 There are various reasons to choose a song. Often a music therapist works to the preference of the patient (which is what she said in the video). Since you're not her patient, you won't necessarily have that preference. A blues fan tends to prefer simpler music that revolves around only a few chords.

  • Excellent and very informative video! Peace, Love & Positive Vibes from a very Happy and Proud Subscriber!

  • This reminds me of the healing modality known as art-therapy. It works by having patients draw scenarios of their trauma. Evidently, trauma gets encoded in the right-side of the brain (for right-handed people). The right brain is creative and somewhat irrational. But through drawing, the trauma gets lifted from the right-side, and can be processed by the logical left-side (again for righties) and then be properly indexed in the emotions and intellect in a rational way.

  • I recommend using a western guitar for what you are doing.

  • i love this

  • I think if I were a depressed person Spanish classical guitar would get me listening.

  • Nine inch nails fan here

  • Cool. I Hope,

Learn Nothing Else Matters by Metallica. You will get you patient rocking.

  • @loveguitars I would personally prescribe Metallica's "Sanitarium" for depression. :P

  • @StratMatt777 That will work !!!

  • Thanks for the video...I am very interested in this...Music can change your mood in a very short while, from good to bad, or vise-versa. I am studying to be a counselor and would think that incorporating this therapy into any therapy could be quite beneficial...
