The Earthbound Giygas battle was great. Subtle eeriness and a shockingly dramatic finale to a game that was otherwise lighthearted and ridiculously goofy.
It was similar to Mother. Granted, the two games didn't have the deepest storyline, their endings were profound. Of course, Mother 3 madeu p for that. It had a very interesting story. I hear it is Inoue's final Mother, meant to be a "work of art"--his magnus opus I guess you could say. He wants to make it a novel.

But their stories, their PLOTS in whole, were not exactly deep. While Earthbound was simply "Ness, Giygas took over the future. You're the chosen one. Go kill him," Mother 3 had an immersive story involving world-alterign events.
By no means am I belittling Earthbound. I wouldn't change a thing about it. I'm just comparing the games.

@BongaFish In all honesty, I think if Earthbound was given a super heavy and emotional plot all the way through the game wouldn't be as great. The surreal atmosphere and lack of characterization gave the game a dreamlike feel. Heavy storytelling worked for Mother 3, but I think it would have weighed down Earthbound. I personally love the final scene in Earthbound for how different it is from the rest of the game. It makes you step back for a second and take a closer look at what's going on.

@toontown2001 He's right. It was simple, short, and sweet. The intros were there, but the party members didn't say THAT much. Remember when you first met Paula, what did she say? She said that she was fine because she knew you'd be able to beat the Happy Happyist cult. Try talking to her again, and she'd say the same thing. The story was THERE, though. You just had to pay attention. I liked that it was like that though. It was easy for me to get into the game. My gf likes it like that too.

@mregasi Giygas is not a Starman. Giygas physical body is only shown in the original Mother game. In Earthbound, Ness and his gang have to defeat his mental body. The Ness face is a reflection.
