  • He was a fag

  • Every time I re-read one of his books in my collection, I cry at the thought that there won't be anymore. Here's to an incredibly imaginative and talented soul.

  • When did he die? 2011?

  • @dannyhood66 I'm sorry to tell you, but it was in 2008. November 4th.

  • @BladesOfMunch Thanks man i had know idea..Sorry to hear about it so late.

  • @dannyhood66 When I found out he had passed away in 2008, what devastated me most was that I had somehow missed this news and only recently learnt of his death!

  • @BladesOfMunch OMG I found out a month ago, and I had the exact same feelings as you describe. Which is wierd because I used to search him all the time for new novels he may be writing and such. Pretty upset he'll never write another magnificent story again..

  • u will never find some 1 like....theres no copy of him meantime .....Rip

  • Saddest day of my life. The only hero I have ever had

  • NOOOOOO!

  • crichton was 6'9" , steven is just normal

  • 1:42

holy crap is steven really that short, and michael really that tall?

  • Look at him... he towers over everybody!

    RIP

  • They're is no better author. All his books are suspenseful and plausible. What does it matter if it doesn't make sense. you have to look really deep into it to find it's not true. His novels gave you something to think about unlike all the stupid fantasy stuff

  • wtf i didnt know he died

  • He was my favorite author... i've read almost all of his books...he will be missed... *sob*

  • An extremely intelligent man who realized the truth about global warming before the emails proved it.

  • Michael Crichton an intelligent man without expertise in climate science and certainly without a scientific foundational for his claims

He was just spewing out more science FICTION. Some silly deniers actually thought he had something credible to contribute. He didn't. Unless perhaps, they value having their delusions validated no matter the source.

  • Yea, this author was quite the writer. Too bad he made himself look like a fool in his denials of global warming. It just didn't matter what the state of the science was. Maybe he was out for the hype and sensationalism, but at the expense of our future generations? Sad.

For those that want to learn more about GW try this site,

Google... NAS Global Warming 2008 Edition

  • Too bad your very username indicates a bias towards a particular premature conclusion.

With the recent scandals happening at the IPCC as a result of the hacking incident at East Anglia University's Climate Research Unit, I'd have thought people would have more sense to keep holding on to CAGW theories.

Could it be that the Sun... the primary driver of all life in this solar system is responsible for global warming? It could be, if you actually look at the solar output data.

  • My username indicates that I'm informed about the situation and have been for decades. How about you, read any books about it? Probably not.

As for the emails try reading what a well respected institutions has to say about them.

Google... AGU Statement Regarding the Recent Release of E-mails Hacked

The Sun? No kidding the is the main driver of climate. Did you honestly think that big hot ball we rotate around was overlooked in the analysis? Solar output can't explain temp increases.

  • If you're reading books, then that explains a lot about your attitude. Instead you need to be reading journals and looking at the quality of the science being done and the data being presented.

Some good things for you to read:

Report of the Committee on Abrupt Climate Change, National Research Council, 2002.

    Free Market Environmentalism, 2001

A Poverty of Reason: Sustainable Development and Economic Growth, 2003

There's a lot more on my bookshelf, but I have a limited character count.

  • My "bias" is to the truth as explained by the best science available.

This from a source YOU provided.

Report of the Committee on Abrupt Climate Change, NRC, 2002

"...greenhouse warming and other human alterations of the earth system may increase the possibility of large, abrupt, and unwelcome regional or global climatic events"

    Old news.

    Yes, there's more than books.

As for the emails, read this one.

Google... AGU Statement Regarding the Recent Release of E-mails Hacked

  • If you are a nay sayer making an argument try finding some credible sources; a respected scientific institution or some credible studies. Otherwise, your expertise to question the current state of the science is meaningless.

  • Has anyone read Pirate Latitudes yet? The waiting list at the local library is really long, so it must be good (or Michael Crichton's death hyped everyone up).

    RIP

  • ive did meh-meh good but not his best work i have to say.

  • Michael Crichton - One of a kind.

  • MC was the reason I started reading novels, as a kid I was too poor to see JP at the movies back in 93, but I got a used copy from the local library for 5 cents (!) and read it, and loved it. Eventually I did see it at the movies when they brought it back for the school holidays :)

  • R.I.P

  • The only Crichton book I've read is Prey & that was awesome. he had a brilliant imagination

  • read congo

  • You are obviously a fatuous moron who couldn't read a book to save your life let alone a righteous work of literature by arguably one of the worlds greatest authors.

  • You expect me to believe that tripe?.....You're obviously adept at lying, that and immature insults. Grow a brain dude.

  • His work will be a great legacy to other authors.

  • he's very tall isnt he ?

  • IS HE DEAD?! aww :/ R.I.P :(

  • Oh my gosh I didn't know Micheal Critchon died! He was my favorite author! RIP Michael...

  • These two (Polymath7 and Maximus) must believe their point is correct but decide to instead of doing the right thing (Which is to agree that the other person has their own opinion) they both decide that others opinions are meaningless and attempt to prove this through using long complex words derived from a dictionary. The argument seemed rather pointless and was only fueled for one of the said two to show which has the larger male reproductive organ. Neither have said organ in my opinion.

  • i just wet myself

  • polymath7, whatever your IQ might be, it is dwarfed by your adolescence.

  • (chuckle) Yeah, that seems fair enough, given what I've written on this board.

You see, "polymat7" is something of a self-parody.

My central motive in posting comments online is to see just how people will respond when challenged int the frankest terms, and I am often exaggeratedly smug and vituperative to this end.

Believe it or not, I have less ignominious intentions in mind.

  • How disrespectful is it to argue when one of the greatest writers of all time has unfortunately passed away?

    R.I.P M. Crichton

  • He is being eaten by raptors in heaven now.

  • Oh dear polymath7 - a clear case of simple envy - you're simply worried about no one ever taking you seriously and resent anyone who has worked hard and made a success of their lioves - Instead you simply hide away festering in your own juices and spit occasionally by way of attentionseeking - STILL, YOU'VE GIVEN ME A GOOD LAUGH!!! ;)XXX

  • It's a pity the poor fellow is dead.

Were he still alive, I might find the happy opportunity to choke him to death with my bare hands and watch the light fade from his bulging eyes.

In every age, the vilest specimens of mankind are to found among demagogues.

  • What the fuck is your problem?

You dislike him? Don't fucking search him retard.

  • Dislike? Oh no, my friend it's more like intense, bitter hatred. I'd like to piss in the face of his bloated corpse.

Do you know the meaning of the word demagogue? (and I didn't search him, I stumbled upon this video.

  • Prove he isn't a demagogue, go right ahead.

  • I said *is* a demagogue; perhaps you thought I meant "demigod".

I base this accusation on his sustained public polemic on behalf climate change denial, and to a lesser extent, his remarks about the supposed innocuousness of secondhand smoke. In both cases, he is sufficiently scientifically literate to know better and this, coupled with the fact that the bulk of his polemic cites no data but rather is comprised almost entirely of anecdotal red herrings and a host of other logical fallacies...

  • II. ...and evasions which he is also too intelligent to employ with any real sincerity, leaves one little choice but to conclude that his rhetoric was blatantly disingenuous and his motives purely mercenary.

I imagine at this point you may be tempted to accuse me of citing no data myself, and to be engaging merely in a feckless and hollow attempt at character assassination.

This leads us to a scientific discussion of global warming, which is to large and complicated a topic to be extruded...

  • III.

...through the narrow aperture of these 500 character boxes. So then; I invite you, and anyone else who may read this to do a little independent research and examine the case for and against global warming -as espoused by scientists in the relevant fields and NOT by politicians, talk show host or airport novelists. Do this, google "logical fallacies", and watch some of Crichton's public interviews on the subject, then come back and see if you can deny that he is a demagogue with...

  • IV.

    ...any real conviction or sincerity.

I understand that it can be more than invidious for some trollish seeming fellow to vituperate one of your favorite authors, but Crichton deserves this in spades.

His books aren't even particularly worth reading, and his sensational style is consistent with my hypothesis that he is less than sincere in all he does and is really no more than an opportunist and intellectual mercenary.

I find it difficult not to guffaw when the opening sentence...

  • V. in the jacket synopsis of one his books reads "Something in the Nevada desert has gone horribly wrong". Oh dear.

This why I stopped reading Crichton when I was seventeen; rereading 'Sphere' and 'Jurassic' park is painful. I had a chuckle when the news presenter i this video said something about scientific plausibility. Take Jurassic park to a geneticist, and see if he shares tis perception. Suffice it to say, Crichton uses a lot more than frog DNA to fill in the gaps in our present...

  • VI.

    ...scientific knowledge.

Crichton's books bare no resemblance to an earnest attempt at thought provoking literature. It has been obvious to me from the age of seventeen that his target audience people of slightly above average intelligence who want to flatter themselves that they are reading something thought provoking, but do not want be bored or taxed by having to grapple with any genuinely profound ideas.

This is the core of Crichton's appeal; he entertains the reader with...

  • dude to me it sounds as if you put a lot of faith in michael crichton as a source of truth, and he let you down. you have been initiated on a spiritual path whether you know it or not. but he's a fiction writer trying to make money. hes not a source of truth and understanding.try some osho or acharya shree.you dont have to agree with them, you are still free to ask your own personal questions.but come on, stop hating michael chrichton, he didnt know any better, he was just doing what he knew.

  • dont give me clarity I went back and read your comments, I understand exactly whats going on. dont think blind high velocity spewed out shitballs of hate are going to go unnoticed. someone had to say something. just let him rest in peace, imperfect, and you go on living in peace, imperfect. thats all anyone can ever do. im sorry you felt misled my michael chrichton. i never read him or stopped reading him so i wouldnt know the feeling. but try some osho. seriously.

  • First, the use of the word demagogue is not restricted t political leaders.

Second, I never put any trust in Michael Crichton as a source of truth -at least no later than the age of seventeen- however it irritates me greatly that so many others do.

Third, I am not simply trolling Michael Crichton videos- I am generally hateful. Yes, hateful. I'm convinced there are a dozen different ways in which collective stupidity (a tautology) may spell the end of civilization, and so I've lost...

  • II. ...the struggle against misanthropy despite my kindly nature and phlegmatic temperament. I do not suffer fools gladly, or even without bitter resentment. A "fool" to me, is basically anyone with an IQ below 140.

    I resent demagogues exponentially more.

But enough of this. I do not mean to vent, and even if I did I am sure no none is interested to hear it. You seemed mildly but genuinely curious as to why I am so vituperative and so I told you.

  • your definition of a fool makes it clear that you are a fool, regardless of your actual or imagined IQ, which I don't doubt are entirely different.

  • How exactly does this demonstrate that I am a fool?

Do you mean to imply that I'm foolish to regard IQ as a reliable index of intelligence, or that it is foolish of me to regard someone with an IQ as high as 140 as a (relative) moron?

Glancing at your favorites, it is not terribly difficult to summon something approaching extreme skepticism that you are in any position to assess my own intelligence. :)

  • Not that there was ever a doubt--the fact that you're a fool was already abundantly clear--but thanks for proving the point so conclusively by your plainly idiotic belief that you can infer anything about a person's intelligence by their favorites.

Now it's clear that you're not just an idiot, but a delusional one. Dangerous combination. Do the world a big favor and kill yourself. Seriously.

  • Oh, just for the record, the fact that you could only see these two possible explanations:

"Do you mean to imply that I'm foolish to regard IQ as a reliable index of intelligence, or that it is foolish of me to regard someone with an IQ as high as 140 as a (relative) moron?"

for how your bizarre definition of a fool makes you a fool...makes you all the more a fool.

  • These are not the only two interpretations I could think of, dumbass. You state that "it is your definition of a fool that makes you a fool" and this strongly implies that my definition is flawed for some obvious reason.

If my definition is so obviously flawed that (in your judgment) it proves me a fool, it is quite reasonable to assume that any critique of it will run along one of these two basic, foreseeable objections.

    You disagree?

Propose a alternative objection that both...

  • II.

...deviates fundamentally from the two I have anticipated and is so self-evident not to have thought of it would prove me a fool.

You then go on to contradict your implied premise by calling definition bizarre and this speaks against your intelligence, not mine. By saying it is bizarre , you seem to suggest that it is unintelligible, which is plainly inconsistent with the idea that it is so obviously flawed it makes me a fool.

To anyone of even moderate intelligence, there can be...

  • III.

...no confusion as to what I meant. I meant, *obviously* that my IQ is considerably higher than 140, and that I am so much more intelligent than the general population that anyone with an IQ below 140 appear by comparison to be an idiot. This does not in itself make me an idiot. At worst it makes me a snob.

But you cited this as a reason in itself, and unless you're prepared to quarrel further with my definition, any evidence of my idiocy must be found outside it.

  • IV.

Please, sir or madam, I do hope you will be so good as to afford me the amusement of your slobbering attempt to furnish this evidence.

Now to you plainly idiotic belief that nothing can inferred about a person's intelligence from their favorites. I suspect that to your way of thinking this is a kind of "prejudice".

    Bullshit.

Can I *deduce* anything about your intelligence from your favorites? Perhaps not.

    But *infer*?

    Most definitely.

    No soup for you!

    Asshat.

  • Yes, you plainly *inferred* entirely too much from the list of favorite entertainment videos of a stranger. This is undoubtedly due to your repeatedly demonstrated profound retardation.

As to the snob/idiot distinction, you're wrong again; it does indeed make you an idiot as well as a snob. I'll leave it to your self-proclaimed superior intellect to hash that out.

Here's what I *infer* from your favorites: You were understandably picked on in your youth, and now pitifully try to...

  • "Yes, you plainly *inferred* entirely too much..."

Plainly? To whom is this this supposed to be plain?

If you mean to suggest that your non-arguments, your hackneyed attempts at wit, your banal psychological analysis, and the awkward prose in which you express them are sufficient to invalidate any suspicion of your intellectual mediocrity, I am in no wise obliged to concur with this little act self-charity.

  • II. "This is undoubtedly due to your repeatedly demonstrated profound mental retardation." Setting aside that this nothing more than an ever so slightly more sophisticated way of saying "you're wrong because you're a retard", I wonder if you might exercise a little forbearance of my mental deficits, and, in the interest of remedial instruction, cite a single instance in which my retardation has yet been demonstrated -all I ask is one, friend.

  • "As to the idiot/snob distinction, you're wrong again; it does indeed make you an idiot as well as a snob. I'll leave it to your self proclaimed superior intellect to hash that out."

I can't help but notice you have simply restated your conclusion, but seem to consider any actual argument on its behalf extraneous.

I say again, if this proves me an idiot my distinction must contain some conceptual flaw that is obvious and therefore easily expressed. Is there a reason then you can't ...

  • ...be bothered to name it?

Is there some tacit principal behind your apparent disinclination to do so?

Would it be presumptuous of me to suppose that you leave it to me to hash out because it is beyond not only your generosity but your intelligence to hash it out for me?

  • compensate for your justifiable inferiority complex with pretentious, pseudo-intellectual posturing.

Your hatred and anger at the late Mr. Chrichton for his entirely rational skepticism regarding the mindless, "sky is falling" rhetoric of both the second-hand smoke Nazis and the global warming catastrophists is clearly symptomatic of your tendency toward overcompensation.

  • "...mindless, sky is falling rhetoric of both second hand smoke Nazis and the global warming catastrophists..."

This infallibly demonstrates your own mindlessness and scientific illiteracy.

The most -the very most- any scientifically literate person could say on this score is that vast amounts of scientific evidence in favor of both the health risks of secondhand smoke and anthropogenic climate change is misleading in some subtle and esoteric way.

To summarily dismiss this evidence as...

  • ... mere capricious medical fascism and apocalyptic paranoia makes you, ipso facto, a moron.

No one above a certain intellectual ceiling could assume this stance with any degree of conviction or sincerity; it simply couldn't happen.

I despise Crichton because as one English historian (Gibbon, I think) aptly and memorably put it, "In every age, the vilest specimens of mankind are to be found among demagogues".

    No soup for you! Asshat.

  • Did you say something? Yeah, that's swell. Now take your little complex and run along, Junior. There's a good boy.

I have a life, which is obviously something you lack, so, buh bye. Look, there's a smoker down the street slaughtering innocents. Activate your superpowers and save mankind.

    Asshat.

  • I think I may take that amalgam of cliche's as a concession of defeat.

It is usually the work of a moment to puncture the empty heads of ninnies like you, even when a flock of them sets upon me like balloons upon a cactus,

and so believe it or not this leaves me ample time for a "life".

Oddly enough, your exhortation that I kill myself has proved less than persuasive.

Irksome as it may be, I'm afraid it appears I shall somehow manage to continue to draw breath.

    No soup for you!

    Asshat.

  • Yes, by all means, you go ahead and do that. And while you're doing that which you do so well, namely, drawing absurd conclusions and inexplicably considering yourself superior despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary, you might want do some research on the complex subject of apostrophes and their proper usage.

  • The fact remains, Crichton did study "climate change" for three years and read an inordinate amount of material on the topic, clearly no small feat. Have a look at the bibliography at the end of State of Fear.

  • yeah man seriously, come on...just let the man be dead and be quiet. If you're not a fan you're not a fan, enough of that shit. Whatever he did to you, it can't be undone, so just move on whiner. I quite enjoyed that jurassic park movie, myself.

  • He did nothing to me personally -I thought I made my reasons for despising him crystal clear. I did not seek out this video, and believe me, I know how I sound.

But it is always worth a moment's time to finger a demagogue, even if he happens to be recently deceased.

I am through, unless of course someone should be so foolhardy as to challenge my assertions.

  • I dont think I get what youre saying man. I just looked up demagogue and it said a leader who makes use of popular prejudices in order to gain power. But he was a writer who got rich, not a leader.Just so you dont get insulted or some stupid shit Thats not challenging your assertions, just requesting some clarity on why you hate michael chrichton. was he an illuminist? cause I am an no fan of them, and I can definitely see how you could react that way if that were the case. but why the hate?

  • I just wanted to say the way your express yourself with the written word is quite exceptional :) I couldn't give a frogs fat arse what the debate is about though ;)

  • Notice that his death comes under ''The Entertainment" part of the news. awesome

  • What are you insinuating? That it is incongruous for an death of an airport novelist to be reported during an entertainment segment.?

    Seem perfectly apt to me.

  • what an immensely talented man! r.i.p.

  • Wow he looks like he's in his 40's!

  • Nice guy.

  • sad sad day... loss of the most lucid of writers

  • R.I.P Michael

    the tallest guy in heaven...

  • Heaven? *Most* unlikely -for moral as well as ontological reasons.

By my lights, It really is a bitter shame that there is no hell in which this utterly unscrupulous sociopath can burn.

    R.I.T. "Micheal".

  • oh my god, i cant believe this. i was looking forward to his new book

  • Were you? Are you perhaps then a business student with 1117 IQ who likes to flatter himself that he is reading something "intellectual"?

  • What the fuck is your problem dude? Have you got some childhood issues?

  • I think I've already stated what my problem is in no uncertain terms. Nonetheless, I will reiterate and expatiate:

I stumbled upon some videos of Demagogue and poseur Micheal Crichton mouthing off about global warming and second hand smoke and to leave a few comments expressing my disgust. I also I must admit, could not resist clicking in this video for the express purpose of tap-dancing on his grave.

I am well aware that this will seem vicious to the oblivious, but it is richly deserved.

  • You will live forever in the fantastical worlds you have created.

  • Oh wow! This is news to me... hadn't even heard about it

  • RIP MICHAEL CRICHTON
