I keep Snappers for pets, they actually make really good pets if taken when young and become pretty docile. They are one of the more intelligent turtles, and quickly learn who their keeper is and all that. That stated, I have no problem if someone trapping them, as long as they are doing it within reason and not trying to wipe them out. they are actually a pretty important part of the ecosystem, and waterways suffer without them

That hook is WAY too small.  I use mustad 10/0 hooks, about 3 1/2 inches long and just over an inch between the barb and shank (which is also the minimum legal size for turtle hooks in my state). With small hooks, you're gonna catch small turtles, which are no easier to clean than the big ones, but have so little meat - not worth the trouble.

i use chicken gizzard and a plus about that if they dont swallow the hook you still got your bait and also if you buy a full pack i bring my grill and a few choice spices and i keep 5 or 10 just in case like i said they either swallow the hook or line snaps or get snagged and you got to cut it

what also catches turtles a good way is take some bamboo pole the small ones and take a big hook and some masonry line and try the line and hook together then tie it on the bamboo pole and have a small boat and go out in a pond and stick it as far as you can right in the mud
