@silendt It was done by Texas A&M in the 1960s against Texas, although they still lost the game. That might have been the first occurance of it, but who knows.
Their only touchdown of the game... Still was an amazing play though, and that wide receiver that smacked the ball should major in performing arts because he obviously has some acting talent.
Only if it worked like that every time, my highschool team tried it and the ball bounced backwards and the other team picked it up , then ran it for a TD
@BobB94 An incomplete lateral pass is considered a fumble in NCAA rules. So the receiver faked that it was incomplete but actually had just recovered a fumble.
Smackin the ball was the smartest thing any1 could do in the history of forever......maybe not, but he sold the fuck outta that shit. The one linemen wasnt fooled tho, he kept goin at him, haha! Pretty sad a skol no1 heard of except the time they played a FBC Team, gets fooled by a FBS team, haha!
@PoderdelChino you kno how many times that play was tried in practice? They might've got lucky tho b/c you dont practice on turf....you practice on grass, but all trick plays are risky, no matter wat you do
Good thing you said you only watched football for 20 years. Turner Gill ran this play at Nebraska 27 years ago. Bounce pass to the wingback who throws down field.
The play is awesome... but i have to ask, is it allowed to pass the football after a fumble? I mean, the football touched the ground on a side/back pass, right? So it is a fumble. And then the football is passed forward. Is it legal according to NCAA rules?
@BotanistAtAll Yes it happens all the time with the qb and the center. Think about all the times the QB has dropped a snap while directly under center or in shotgun position and then picks the ball up and tries to resume the play. Or when the place holder for the field goal attempt drops the hold and then scrambles and throws the ball. This play is supposed to make dfense think it is a incomplete pass not a fumble situation. Hope that shines some light on the subject.
You have been watching Football for 20years and and never knew that? Dude... What about a qb fumble behind the LOS.... It is LIVE! A Flea flicker? QB toss to HB and HB tosses to QB...... LIVE!
The reason why the D stopped running is because they are not watching it like we are (endzone to endzone viewing the LOS.) They do not have depth perception from that side of the line, therefore it appears as a forward pass and a dead ball.
I know the receiver or running back could pass the ball forward if they catch the lateral but I sure didn't know that the ball could touch the ground and then be thrown. That's why the defense stopped attacking because they probably thought the same as me, that the ball couldn't be thrown once it hit the ground... I've been watching football for over 20 years and didn't know that. What about if the qb tosses to the running back behind him and the ball hits the ground..can the qb throw it again?
@MasterJ29 You've been watching football for 20 years and have never seen a botched snap where the QB throws after he recovers the ball? That's the same thing except this went a little further.
Try turning on the TV next time you watch football.
@MasterJ29 This is a lateral though, not a fumble. And since he was behind the line of scrimmage its completely ok. Like when you see a football team throw a reverse pitch and the running back will sometimes throw down-field. Even if during the pitch the ball hit the ground he'd be able to throw.
I don't get this...I know that the ball was a lateral pass, so the same as a fumble and can be advanced by running....BUT you aren't allowed to forward pass a fumble after you recover it are you? I thought once the ball was fumbled (hit the ground) all you can do is more backwards laterals but not forward...Is this a special college rule or something?
@MasterJ29 its the same thing as the NFL when a quarterback laterals it to a wide receiver and he bombs it down the field... as long as he is behind the line of scrimmage he can throw it
Its a desighned play. If he completes the pass, the defence doesnt stop. By bouncing the pass, the defence thinks its a incomplete pass and gives up on play. It was a brilliant play but made little difference in finale score.
@zackhanscom that maybe so but don't you agree that a highly skilled football team should have the on-field awareness to stop a play like this? Nevertheless it was a smart play that was well executed, and left Wake standing around.
@Wicks91 It's a Lateral Pass. If it's complete, the receiver can attempt a forward pass. Sorta like a fumble in that if it hits the ground and it's recovered you can advance the play. You can also wikipedia "lateral pass"
@Wicks91 the trick is that if the QB throws down the field and it hits the ground, the ball is dead, but if he throws behind him it's actually a lateral, not a pass, so if it hits the ground it's a fumble and the ball is live. So they made it look like an incomplete pass (thus the players stopped) but then threw the still-live ball.
those defenders need to lose their scholarships. play THROUGH the whistle. not TO the whistle. and if you don't hear one, you sure as heck shouldn't stop running. ever.
My team used this play, helped us win in OT against fossil ridge high, except we called it "bounce pass" best play we ever used lol

It may be a fumble but the player who recovered the fumble is not down, therefore the play is still live and the pass is legal.

Side/back pass to the gound = fumble
then it is allowed in NCAA to pass after a fumble? In NFL if the offense recovers and the formation is still valid for a pass they can pass
