There is a documentary about this. It was talking about how in Egypt, a couple of hundred kilometres south west of Cairo there is found a large area of desert that contains a yellow glass like substance. They tested the carbon structure of the glass and determined that it was created by an extremely intense heat, which can't be replicated by even nuclear explosions. Theory was a loosely packed meteor which burns hotter than normal, "spontaneously" combusting before hitting the ground.

Wow, this news cast finally does it justice, no pathetic stories of comets by blinded wannabe "scientists" that let the dogma of the "scientific" world get between them and reality. Was it a comet? No way. Was it an alien spaceship? I think not. Was it the god of Thunder? How laughable. But if they will honestly look at it without bias, we may find out what it really was. For now, it is beyond all that we are willing to believe, thus there is nothing that can cause something like that.

My favorite explanation is that Nicola Tesla did it. Some people say he was testing his method of transmitting electricity around the world without wires. He was supposed to be sending the pulse over the North Pole so a prominent explorer would see it, but he miscalculated earth's gravity and the pulse crashed into the ground. It sounds cooler then a comet or meteor, but it's unlikely that it would even be possible to generate such a pulse with technology of the day.
