Sinatra was a liberal for his time, but he believed in American Exceptionalism which is why he and many of his generation gravitated to the Republican party in the 70's and 80's.
A little unpublished fact, was that he and the Rat Pack almost single-handedly desegregated the city of Las Vegas, because they refused to perform where Sammy Davis Jr. would be forced to enter through the back door; or where black bandmembers were openly segregated. Because of their drawing power, casinos, restaurants, and hotels complied....and this was done on Sinatra's part without looking for praise or recognition.
I always thought it odd that the filmmakers had Sinatra singing "Ol' Man River" (about a Black Slave), with an all white orchestra, in white tuxedos with a white stage and background... Not that he didn't sing it great! Just kinda strange...
Also a first-class asshole, though... under certain circumstances. Still, I'm in love with him and I'm quite a few generations removed from the '40s bobbysoxers.
wow he was really important to our society "the Voice" was great i am doing a big project on him and i see the real great characteristics of him and how liffe was when he was around
There are no more Icons of Sinatra's stature! Artists and Entertainers like Bing Crosby, Louis Armstrong, Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, Elvis Presley, Dean Martin and Andy Williams are American cultural treasures, people who are irreplacable. How many talented singers and entertainers have come along in the past 10 years? None!

Hate to break you Liberals hearts but Sinatra was a Republican.

@JimPrewitt Actually Sinatra was a Democrat, until he converted to the Republican party in 1963. So. He was a Liberal for most of his life.

@Jefferson1942 haha you're funny. Even Democrats weren't liberal pre-1963

@waltandrus once Sinatra got the power he would make sure the band had at least 15% black musicians.
he threatened to cancell a tour once because the band was all white.
the band was changed.
