WHY would he PRETEND to be Liquid just to trick a stupid computer system? Snake would have STILL gone after him. Perhaps Liquid and Ocelot were one/Ocelot did it so that Liquid didn't COMPLETELY control him/he could use Liquid's knowledge (nanomachines in the blood in Liquid's arm) to his advantage?

Need a bit of clarity here.In the game they never said Ocelot removed the Liquid Arm and replaced it-in fact, when I saw it I thought that was how he fused it onto him. Then Big Boss said Ocelot transplanted Liquid's personality onto himself via nanomachines,hypnosis and (on the wiki) drugs and therapy. It explains why Ocelot lost Liquid's voice. WHY did Kojima change it since Liquid was so well accepted they made him posses Ocelot in MGS2 to the extent of veins on his head/voice change.

Ocelot is the son of The Sorrow (and The Joy). The Sorrow was able to channel the spirits of the dead (his boss fight in 3). Thus, it's not absurd to say Ocelot might possess something of these powers as well. He grafted Liquid's arm onto him in order to fool the Patriots, and was able to channel Liquid's spirit (seemingly unwillingly). Even though the deception was proving effective, channeling Liquid's spirit was making him go crazy. So, he took off the arm and...

@Kaweebo It never did. At the end of MGS4 it's revealed the Ocelot was simply acting the whole time. Liquid was dead ever since the end of MGS1. He never came back, not even from possessing. He simply was able to "acquire" Liquid's personality via nanomachines, hypnosis, and drugs. I can't remember exactly why he did it, but Big Boss explains it at the end of MGS4. I'm pretty sure it was something he did to fool the Patriots in his efforts to destroy them.

@QueKayCay Actually the arm probably did posses him, since some of Ocelot's actions at MGS2 wouldn't make sence otherwise. For example at the end of the game why'd he suddenly decide to go after the Patriots leaving Snake, Solidus and Raiden alive after trying his best to kill all of them (he couldn't possibly have foreseen Fortune having real psychic powers and rescuing them)?

Ocelot is the biggest turncoat of series, but that change of heart would seem too sudden even for him to make.

Sure Big Boss explains it that way, but there are some details that could imply truth isn't that clear. For example the fact that Psycho Mantis seemingly came alive & possessed leader of BB unit via same method Ocelot used to acquire Liquid's persona (MGS4 Database explains the reason he got rid of the arm was to "get his psyche in balance").

It's also stated at MG wiki his character is never completely explained. Personally I think that Kojima made his character unclear and complicated like that on purpose, in order for fans to see him as which villain they liked more, Liquid or Ocelot.

If it's about better primary villain however, I'd go with Liquid since he is more menacing, charismatic and all in all more powerful character than Ocelot, atleast in my opinion.

Ocelot is a very appealing bad guy, but I kind of can't see him as the real nemesis of the game. Unlike Liquid, he always seems to be more of a right hand guy or henchman than the main villain.

I know it was retconned, but the official record is that it was all a guise. Ocelot removed the arm because Liquid's "nanite-infested arm" (quoting from MGS4 documentary by Kojima) was throwing Ocelot's psyche out of balance. Liquid's arm caused spasams in Ocelot so he replaced it, so that he could be Liquid all the time--not just with Solid.
