What a Tank! built back 70 years ago. What a TAnk! when i see one at show , i still WOW! Germans built tank that was un equal unless Allies got in a lucky shot. Like the one were a 76mm bounced off the barrel and wedge in the turrent gears and jammed the turrent, was abandoned. What lucky shot!
We are restoring the engine in the museum at the moment... A real piece of engineering... The Maybach did it very good, i think we will have this beast rolling here too in the next few months!
OldTimerMercedesBenz - You are very fortunate to be able to take part in restoring a piece of history. I envy you. :) What type of engine oil are you supposed to use in a Maybach engine? Petroleum? Synthetic? Viscosity?
Well there were two engines used in tiger tanks, one was 21.3 liter and the second one was 23.3 liter. We have the first one, HL 210 TRM P45 with 650 HP. Very rare, but anyway, the oil is in a cannister, pumped out by the pump. The oil capacity is 28 litres. We will tank in synthetic oil, but i dont know about the viscosity yet, i have to wait until museum conference puts orders...
Well we will have a meeting next saturday, about details, first opening to public, security + other boring stuff... We will tank oil for summer weather, because it will stay in the museum during the winter, otherwise the beast will roll the road. I have to say it would be in better condition if it's previous "owner" would sell it more than 20 years ago. It was in a barn, pretty rusty, and then his daughter sold it. But the engine: it was almost spotless!
OldTimerMercedesBenz - Interesting story! :) A Tiger tank, in a barn. lol I have run my own business for many years distributing the worlds finest synthetic oils and it would be my pleasure to help you folks out with a suitable oil for this irreplaceable piece of history! I searched the Internet trying to find out what viscosity oil this engine uses, but to no avail. With a vehicle that large, I would imagine a thicker oil, something on the order of a 15W-40 or 20W-50 would be appropriate.
Could just be sleep deprivation, but I can almost feel the Tiger's engine rumbling through my chest! Tiger 131 is certainly a rare and beautiful gem!

Awesome engine sound. Whatever flaws they had, I haven't heard any tank sounding so deep, smooth and solid.

Are they using the original engine for this one? So cool!!!
jolorulz 1 year ago
If I remember right, the original engine was sectioned. But it is running on a correct Maybach.
The whole story is in their 'Tiger Journal'. Sadly I can't add links here - Google for 'Bovington Tiger Journal', and it's at the top of the replies.

OldtimerMercedesBenz - If you can find out what viscosity oil is needed, I can help provide that and it would be my honor to do so. :)

I would appreciate that! Thank you! =D

With oil needs that large, a 55 gallon drum would be appropriate and would have the lowest price per qt./lire too.

Imagine at WORLD WAR TWO compaining as a Panzergrenadier such a beast. The earth shaked beneath your feet.
You can feel that if modern heavy tanks drive nearbay. THE EARTH SHAKE.
