Excellent, excellent discussion of tactics. Thank you for posting this. I was so struck with how content-rich this video is I had to pause a moment and give kudos. Nice work!
I use the line as a part of my fencing and I've heard mixed messages about its usage. I try to use the line to bait my opponent to beat on their attack (they must beat the blade before they attack right?). I then take advantage of my fast hands and pull my blade away and make an attack. If they don't hit my blade in their attempt at a beat, they lose right of way and give me the attack right? I've been very confused with this. Love the videos by the way. Keep it up.
@kevinthemathgeek depends on how they search: if it is a little search and you keep your forward movement i would say that you do not lose right of way when searching for line. on the other hand, if you do a gigantic search, like in the clip of szilagyi and decsi i would say you do lose right of way if your opponent attacks at that moment, although i am not entirely sure i have footage of an example of that because it rarely happens at a high level
@CyrusofChaos thanks for the clarification. if you're on the offense and your opponent uses a line on the retreat, you must beat the blade before you attack right? because if you don't and it's a double-light it's the other person's point. I fence at a high-school level and nobody seems sure what the rules are. lol
1. The line itself is very rarely what gets the hit, usually it's setting something else up
2. If the president EVER gives PIL against you, call for a replay (if available), being perfectly correct seems very difficult on slow motion. If you don't then change it up.
under a strict *and correct* interpretation of the rules you are correct. however sabre is not that cut and dry: these actions are essentially line, even if the arm is not extended correctly and the point is not kept on the target the entire time. it matters more what your opponent is doing. point is called very, very loosely these days
cyrusofchaos, there's another excellent example of point in line in the finals of the 04 olympics. it was aldo montano's 14th touch in case you dont want to go through the entire video. however if you feel the need to watch the entire thing, be my guest. it was an awesome bout anyway lol
unfortunately no. i've just spent the last half hour looking for it. unless you want to buy the dvd to the 04 olympics. but that bout was so crazy, aldo literally flipped on the strip when he won lol

More good points here:
1. The line itself is very rarely what gets the hit, usually it's setting something else up
2. If the president EVER gives PIL against you, call for a replay (if available), being perfectly correct seems very difficult on slow motion. If you don't then change it up.
Good video.

I might be wrong but i think the arm has to be extended and the point remaining threating to target to count as PIL
