  • I use these brushes and smooth stroke, even bought his DVD kit, great stuff, my designer friends are always stunned that I know how to pinstripe.

  • extraordinario

  • how do you get rid of the grid?

  • @joeypockets59 No matter what kind of pencil your using they are hopefully water soluable. I use a micro-fiber cloth sprayed with Windex after the piece is dry

  • @joeypockets59 Windex sprayed on a micro-fiber cloth after the project has dried

  • You got me with the blues. Thanks for the great inspiration!!

  • Thank you for making this video. I was trying to buy a kit, to start pin striping, and just so happen I seen this video. I now know what brushes I want! Thanks and very good work!!!

  • i'm relatively new to the world of pinstriping but have been doing art throughout my life (oil paintings & mural work). i tried using mack brushes for a while and just couldn't seem to get the hang of it until i bought a Kafka brush several months ago. Whoa, "it gives you wings" is right! my work has improved tremendously and i've been receiving compliments from people who know pinstriping.. thanks! btw, nice blues music playing in the background. Greetings from my Sweet Home, Chicago!

  • @ontherun070 Comments such as yours are what keeps me coming up with new product for the art form, thank you so much for taking the time to post . If I can help just ask. I also have a fine arts background ,and have fallen in love with this discipline, have fun!

    Steve

  • It could be so great if you could make on my dirt bike a great pinstriping stuff like that ! Unfortunately I live in France ...

Amazing thing you`re doing keep it up ;)

  • wow i just happened upon this video and discover that the brushes i just bought(first brushes i ever bought) are designed by you! i lucked out!

  • @azonicrider32 I hope you enjoy the experience as much as I have, I know that you have the right tools for success. If you need help you can e-mail steve@kooltie.com and I'll help you when I can. have fun!

    Steve

  • Steve, any advice on reducing One shot. I like the paint but its so thick I have trouble palleting with it.

  • You thin the paint with mineral spirits, until it gets to the consistency of heavy whipping cream, also put some of my smooth stroke in (2-3 drops) it is a gloss and flow enhancer and will eliminate fish-eye. Watch all of my u-tube videos it will help. Have fun,

    Steve

  • Mr. Kafka, I would like to know your method, and materials you use, to preserve your brushes.

  • I make a brush oil that is a wax and acid free neatsfoot oil, scented with patchouli, it is all natural, not petroleum based, so it nurtures the hair and preserves it too.It also rinses out with mineral spirits. After painting, wipe out excess paint rinse in lacquer thinner, then spirits then a few drops of oil to saturate the hair, then lay flat and undisturbed until you want to paint again.

    Have fun,

    Steve

  • You got amazing style Steve, a buddy of mines passed me down his first set of Kafka brushes today and I'm anxious too start striping :) man oh man do I hope I can get even one tenth as goof as you man! Great work!!!

  • @dethkatt Although I'm glad you have my brushes, I'm wondering why he gave them up?

If I can help just ask, go to steve kafka.com, have fun!

  • steve, actually i met you about 30 years ago... long time, huh? i always admired your work, and still do, but i got into the multi-media world of racing, and fantasy art. i noticed that your brush was synthetic, and wondered what is up with that? i always used grumbacher/langnickel brushes. part of my past. i still like your work, but i'm no copycat. c'ya, and best wishes.

  • the sizing (alaphatic resin) comes off just as easily with plain warm water. the plus side being that water doesn't break down the organic makeup of the chinchilla hair as lacquer thinner does.

  • @jacklazzell Some how I am never comfortable putting a brush in water unless that's where it will spend it's life. Chinchilla hair?,sorry none of that in my brushes, mostly synthetic.

    Steve

  • Where can I buy those brushes?

  • Respond to this video...

  • hey steve im just starting out and was wondering if u have any beginners advice for me.

  • @Kojacan20 The fastest way to learn some great techniques is the System, on steve kafka.com. e-mail me if I can help you.

    Steve

    Steve

  • Now I'm gonna have to airbrush some shirts and buy your products. I am rather delighted to find your brushes before I went and wasted money on the Mac's. Such a versitile brush!!!!

    Steve

  • hi Mr Kafka i am in japan right now and am wondering if you have a distrbuter out here ,its hard to find good pinstriping tools out in this countrey but this is where i live i hope to watch more of your videos and finaly get some of your tools

  • Respond to this video...

  • @tudychan We are always looking for new distributors,go to steve kafka.com

  • i just bought on for perfect line hard to do man

  • Thanks, the alcohol I used was 91 % isopropyl. Now I know Which alcohol to get.

  • I have a wooden panels that I spray painted and I pinstriped it , I messed up a line so I used alcohol to fix it, it work but the spray paint on the panel started to melt Why would this happen??

  • @29roadwarrior There are different types of spray paint that are affected by some types of alcohol, liike denatured is bad stuff, isopropyl 70% rubbing alcohol is all I use. Learn a lesson from this,so it never happens on a customer's ride.I spray demo panels with rustoleum, and it seems to hold up. Dutch liked to stripe with it because of availability and color choices. When One shot was available at first it was white only.

  • Mr Kafka, I recently purchased your grid, #3 brush and some Staedtler pencils. I have a question. Can I apply my one shot enamel directly over my grid lines drawn by the Staedtler pencils without worry of the enamel coming off where it crosses the grid lines that I have drawn?

  • @Robgill2008 Just wipe before you paint to get ant extra residue ,when your done painting and the piece is dry spray a micro-fiber cloth with Windex , and gently wipe off the rest of the lines. Have fun!!

    Steve

  • Steve,

I went to your website and couldn't find the grid. Did you discontinue them? Any other place to find it? Anyways keep up the great work. You are a true legend in our lowrider scene and the intelligent lowriders know it's the KAFKA STYLE NOT LOWRIDER STYLE LOL

  • @bountykilla777 No I'd never discontinue the Grid it's way to cool, just go to kooltie.com ,it's under new products.

    Steve

  • Ah, the key word here is need The answer is no, I use mineral spirits and a few drops of my paint additive Smooth Stroke , fish-eye eliminator, gloss & flow enhancer and makes the paint tougher, sometimes I put some hardner in the paint ,I may start doing it all the time . I've known stripers that have used gasoline to thin the paint try everything and you will find a combination that works for you, there are no absolutes.

    Steve-.

  • Thanks, do you need different Reducers for different Temperatures?

  • Could you use car paint reducer ? or is it's best just to get the 1-shot reducer?

  • @29roadwarrior One Shot Tells you to use their product, I use it with mineral spirits from Home depot along with lacquer thinner to clean the brush out with.I also ad my Smooth Stroke paint additive to all my work, you can never be too safe!!

    Regards

    Seve`

  • Could you use car paint reducer for pinstriping ??

  • right on man, , that little stall made those arrow type points, i can hear in your voice your sick of being copyied but love to help people learn , and learn well, its not often masters have the patience to teach , but love to do so, , i will be buying all your products , thank you for putting up the clips and helping people like myself learn something, ,

  • if you haven't already tried the new "bobbo" scroll brush, i tried it and it does amazing things it is a very nice new brush that is sapose to be the newer and better scroll brush and thanx for the new ideas you are giving me,.. at night i can't go to bed because of all the designs that are poping up in my head. Plz if you could get to do so me more simple designs that i could use to base my ideas off of and i lovey your work and thanx so much.

    Sincerly,

    Garrett

  • The "new" brush that you are referring to is a shorter, poorly made copy of my design, There are several copies of my designs out there all made by the same company, if you would try The Short Stroke brush @steve kafka.com, you would see how it is supposed to work. Someone has told you that it is a new design when it is clearly a copy. As far as simple designs look at my other videos on 'ol skool ,they will be easier for you. When you need help just ask.

    Steve

  • i want to try one of these brushes, what' s the name and size of this, can i know pls?

  • I am new to striping. Bought your #3 brush and 1shot paint. Also bought your grid. I love watching your videos. I am practicing a lot. I am currently painting my motorcycle satin black and I'm going to do some old school red and white pinstriping. When are you going to do more videos?

  • @freeskier92314 Well I'm just releasing 20 new lettering brushes so I will defiantly be demonstrating them,as of the present time there are 15 u-tube vids up.

    Steve

  • Thank you very much, Mr. Kafka! I realy, honestly admire to your art, to this beautiful, unique and elegant design! Paradise for eyes.... :)

  • @hesse13 Wow! Paradise for the eyes! that's about as nice a compliment as I've ever had! Thanks for the kind words, and I hope your giving it a try it's a blast.

    Regards,

    Steve

  • Beautiful, just beautiful! 2 questions, what's the name of those pencils he uses, can't get the name? Second, he put a few drops of something into the paint, what is it and what's the purpose of it?

    Anybody?

  • @hesse13 The pencils are Staedtler Omnichromes,do the same thing as a Stabilo but don't melt and cleanup is easier. The additive is Smooth Stroke fisheye eliminator ,gloss & flow enhancer, and makes the production more mar resistant, also compatible with both urethane and enamels,go to steve kafka .comThank you for the kind comments, and your questions.

    Regards,

    Steve

  • Maybe someone has asked this, but im in a rush, grubs a waitin. What is the music playing in the background? What kind of board are you working on? Thanks.

  • Plastisheen is what I enjoy doing demos and finished panels on,it closely resembles the finish of a car,and can be purchased on steve kafka.com .The blues tune was a blues channel on cox cable.

  • been using your brushes and there awsome

  • @1313jg Always glad to hear from people that enjoy my brush designs, I've got 20 new lettering brushes coming soon .

    Thanks,

    Steve

  • Bardzo interesujące :) Ślicznie ten pan maluje... Mam nadzieję że pan wzbogaci swój talent choć uważam że już taki by mógł pozostać :)

  • @Madziulkowa dziękuję!

  • a most superb brush , very intricate work made easy

  • @The1200sportster Thanks for the kind comments,I'm glad you appreciate my design.

    Steve

  • I'm concerned as to what you would have to do if you made a mistake? Surely you wouldn't have to start from scratch.

  • Mistakes on the substrate that I'm using for my demos is repairable only if you act quickly, using a q-tip and rubbing alcohol , same works well on automotive finishes, A drip or spatter and you wipe as much as you can with the alcohol and fix as much as you can with the brush, let your conscience be your guide

    Steve

  • I retired a few months back and want to learn to pinstripe. I have one of your #3 brushes and I'm waiting on the grid pattern template.

I notice on your movie that you seem to be able to run your hand back over the stripes you've done pretty quickly. what kind of drying time does the enamel need?

Love your work and the video is very nice and straight forward.

    Steve

  • Drying time could be a whole chapter in the big book of pinstriping. A good guideline would be two hours before you touch fresh stripes , with that in mind ,you should know that temperature ,air movement ,sunlight, artificial light ,humidity,or lack of,what additives ,what thinner(s) will all have ,their own variables ,and effects on the drying time of One Shot lettering enamel ,I really do hope this helps you ,and I'm being serious, good luck.

    Steve

  • Hey there, I've just bought my first brush, got me the short stroke for my little hands :) I'm wondering what type of paints are you using?

  • @dawnrader I've always used a paint called One Shot Signpainters enamel .Thinnede with mineral spirits in a process called palleting . Have fun !

    Steve

  • Gotta get me that grid tool, LOOKS A HELL OF A LOT EZZZZZZIER

  • hey kaftka i want to get into pinstriping. im looking to buy some of your brushes? which ones would be good for a beginner? let me know thanks..

  • @kike3691 Kafka ,no t OK ? I would recommend my #3 &#1 Scroller to start, I also make The "System" ,that has had tremendous success, available on steve ksfka.com

    Hope this helps you.

    Steve

  • Hi, this is really outstanding stuff:) I'm not really into pinstriping, tho' I'd like to try it very much on motorcycles. I've decorated them with airbrush for some years. Nice to hear THE BLUES in the background, I'm also a blues fan:) Greetings!

  • @zwierzok I can't recommend it enough,I've been having fun for quite a while.

    Steve

  • best brush'es ever!!!! so easy to stripe with them

  • nice Lowrider Style Kafka, you are really good at it.

  • A quick history lesson: In 1975 I developed a style of pinstriping that had never been seen by people like Ed Roth, Von Dutch< Shakey Jake, Magoo and every other top striper . In 1978, I moved to Phx.,Az and striped many Lowriders , and was copied by locals like Ron Hernandez,E.T., Bugs, Tony, and most of the stripers on the national show circuit . The informed call it Kafka Style ,ask anyone mentioned. You now have the true story and are among the informed. Regards, Steve Kafka

  • @kafkapinstriping After 35 years using Mack brushes, I switched to the Kafka brushes about 2 years ago and never looked back. What a fine brush. I now have all of them.

  • @yuccasinger2 What can I say to that except it's guys like you that inspire me to come up with new tools all the time.

    Thank you,

    Steve

  • hi there, i wanna buy this brush, can you pls tell me the whole name of this brush... im not sure is this SIGNATURE #3 scroll brush or th new brush "the short stroke". thanks for the answer

  • hi there, i wanna buy this brush, can you pls tell me the whole name of this brush... im not sure is this SIGNATURE #3 scroll brush or th new brush "the short stroke". thanks for the answer

  • @19tonka85 The brush in the video is a #3 signature scroller the Short stroke is a shorter version of the #3 scroller for people with shorter fingers,it does tiney loops and more intricate work easier. Steve

  • just got into pinstriping and it is fun it calms me down its relaxing trying to do airbrushing to but its so frustrating and pinstriping isn't

  • Thats fuckin bad . he got down on that.

  • how do i get/make one of those grids????

  • Awesome technique and true art for me. I'm really impressed!

I have to watch all the other kafka-vids ...

    Greetz form Berlin, Germany ...

  • Great workmanship !

Does the smoth stroke work with HOK pinstriping paints ???

  • @CA7LOS Thats just one of the great things about Smooth Stroke it's compatable with euros and enamels ,by hand or spray.

    Steve

  • i tried pin striping once...it looked exactly like it does on this video from 1:40 to 2:10...good stuff!!

  • your a genius, keep up the great work Kafka, its great that people like yourself is keeping the art alive. keep it up.

  • @thesoria1 Smooth Stroke Is a paint additive that eliminates Fisheye ,or contamination of any kind on the paint surface so that the painted line will adhere to the surface,it also a gloss and flow enhancer ,and makes the finished product more mar resistant .ISmooth Stroke is also compatible with urethane s as well as enamels unlike other brands. Hope this helps,

    Steve

  • i cant find im my country the special paint so what other paint can i use to pinstrip?

  • @GIbo9mm We can ship world wide ,the paint should be a sign paint ,an enamel ,thinned gently with paint thinner ,or mineral spirits, the brushes are sold by me on steve kafka .com ,good luck !

  • just talked to steve a few hours ago and got some supplies from him. gonna give this pin striping thing a try. im a beginner so it may take a bit to get the hang.

steve, please keep these videos coming. they are very informative.

  • Thank you for sharing your technique and skills. As an art teacher and artist of several media, I pinstripe for myself and on my vehicles that I roll over. I have been using your course to work it through to work PT. Any tips for starting out on other peoples machines? What is a fair way to charge? Thanks.

  • where can i get the paint , brushes and .. what do you use for the canvas? Please write back and thanks

  • Man, that looks hard

  • thats was awesome man kept me well entertained while trying my hardest to take in what your trying to show/teach as best i can:)

  • can you use lacquer thinner to pallet? amazing work man!!!

  • @drunknfairy1 Sometimes to break down old paint quickly I use a small amount of lacquer thinner, also to airbrush . I thin with mineral spirits ONLY ! for pinstriping Thank you for the kind comment ,

    Regards,

    Steve

  • may i make asugestion icorprate henna desines with ure pin striping it would give it a 60s look

  • Muy bueno..menudo dominio..un saludo

  • Great style ... you make it look so easy !!

  • Where can I buy some brushes? Well done Kafka you make it look so easy ..

  • thats cool kafka

  • That's a sweet tool for saving time. Nice.

  • eso es arte

  • Gracias Amigo

  • i would like to know how and where to get one of those #3 scrolling brushes you are using. they look like they work great, i need to try one

  • Good morning I love your achievements and your explanation they help me a lot to ameliorate me

  • When you dip your brush before you mix are you dipping it in reducer? Can turpentine or an equivalent serve the same purpose?

  • I'm using mineral spirits to pallet, lacquer thinner to clean the brush between colors. I add smooth stroke as a gloss and flow enhancer and fish eye eliminator. Turps has been used for years, smells professional but I think it creates drag. Hope this helps.

  • Thank you for the information, this helps immensely. I'll be picking up some OMS soon, then. I recently ordered one of your brushes, it should be here and I can't wait to use it.

  • Where can I get that grid stencil? I cant find it anywhere...

  • @MadHatter334356 888-566-5843

  • Can you tell me were I can buy the scrolling brushes you are using?I have been using MACK scroll brushes and I'm not happy with them. They don't hold enough paint.

  • @jaybarncord Call 888-566-5843

  • what size brush is that?

  • #3 scrolling brush

  • What brand is this #3 scrolling brush ?

  • are you using acryl color?

    or the oil colors?

  • I use One Shot sign painting enamel.

  • A ruler and a stabilo work just as good.

  • I know that every second counts when striping professionally and the Grid just plain saves time. As far as Stabilo is concerned, you might want to try Staedtler Omnichrom. They don't melt and leave an easier clean-up.

  • Steve Kafka is a master at the art of pinstriping. His products are the very best
