Just saw the Red Shoes and found out that this movie had most of the cast, now I'm desperate to see it! Looks gorgeous, hope the Criterion Collection picks it up.
@YusakuGodai The DVD of The Tales of Hoffman is stunning on my big 46" HD screen.... a true masterpiece. I think the Criterion Collection have done The Red Shoes only....
@GreyGardensGuignol I found out that they did do Tales of Hoffman on Criterion. Its out of print, but a quick ebay search and I had it. Soooooo good! At 29 I've developed a major crush on Moira Shearer. ^_^
@YusakuGodai I like Moira Shearer too .. but Ludmilla Tcherina is bewitching and darkly fascinating....discovering her in this film made me find out more about her life.
@GreyGardensGuignol You should have seen Ludmilla Tcherina in "The Sign of Pagans", 1955, a film about Atila the Hun. She was always marvelous. Rockybrazil1
Magnificent. I just met some of the old Ballet Russe people and certain of them love this as much as I...some may say this is schmaltz or silly. I say this is way I would love to feel at those extraordinary moments in my own life. Most lovely interlude, wish it would last forever.
The 1951 film was stunning!!! I discovered Ludmilla Tchérina, the beutiful and talented ballet dancer and have been in love with her ever since. Thank you for this wonderful reminder.
@passalapassa Me too, I discovered Ludmilla Tcherina in this film. I was 8 years old and since then she became my favourite movie actress and ballet dancer. Never seen so beautiful woman! She doesn't dance: she floats in the air; she doesn't seem real. Rockybrazil1
For 1951 this was an unusually frank portrayal of a courtesan/prostitute - or of any woman with sex in mind. Some twenty to fifty years ahead of its time. It wouldn't be out of place in a music video of the 1990s or the 2000s.
Yes, but it's infinitely better - on an altogether higher artistic plane. (I'd like to see what modern video-makers could do using 1951 equipment.)
xalaat has said everything that needs to be said about this film, of which The Tale Of Giulietta (from which this short clip is excerpted) is the greatest and most poignant sequence. This is just heart-stoppingly beautiful, musically, textually and visually.
An odd and wonderful film. A favorite of both Martin Scorsese and George Romero!

I agree that the costume and makeup were advanced but I think the presentation would be too slow that is no jump cuts that define music videos
It is a lovely song
