Alright, I never comment on facebook videos, but I stumbled across this video. This is truly brilliant. I've been thinking about picking up a 404, and this sold me on it. Your music is incredible! Very relaxing.
i have a question... well first off, love this an the album you did man. an now the question. does the sp-404sx do the same thing as the sp-404 like yours do?
@woterx Im not him but I have an SP-404 and the SP-404sx is easier to import samples into and it has better quality so its the same but better. So you should go with the sx ;)
@acey45 thanx alot man an just one more question to add as well. how do you save or record your beat to make an mp3 of it? do we use a program like logic or reson ect.. ?
@acey45 Well If your saving it from the sampler you could just use garage band or anything. But If you want to make a beat to add there are a lot of things for it. Logic has a beat maker, Reason, Ableton. Reason is probuly the best one but Ableton has the best Mastered. Logic's get's the job done but not the best (it's not bad ethor) . But I would say that logic is one of the better mixing systems out there.
hey man... I love your music I listen to beautiful wave '74 all the time. I'm thinking about pickin up an sp404 and I was wondering if that drum loop you used in this track was a pattern you made on the SP or a sample you loaded in. I also wanted to know if you can play your samples on the SP while playing a pattern, and if you are able to play multiple patterns at the same time. Sorry to trouble you man, i'd really appreciate a response thanks
@joetssy Hey dude, it is not a pattern, but I would nto say it is a "sample I loaded in." it is a loop i created by layering multiple drum samples using the resample feature which basically allows you to make a new sample out of up to 3 samples you already have saved. You can play samples over a pattern. You cannot play multiple patterns at a time. No worries, take care,
so jealous. i wish i could make sick music like this. if i were to buy one of those, is there a lot to it? does it take a long time experience wise to make something as good as this ?
@xHotTotz I don't think so. But i guess it depends on how much you play and what you consider good. Also helps if you can play instruments but I imagine its not nessescary. It is deffinitely one of the easiest samplers to pick up and play, i've taught multiple people how to use it in like 30 minutes.
@xHotTotz Ya you can sample your own audio into the unit (hence, it's called a sampler). It's a really easy piece of equipment to use, but the kind of tunes you're able to make with it is largely dependent on A) the kinds of samples you have access to (I recommend a record player or line-in recording from a computer) and B) what other equipment you have (this guy has made some impressive stuff using the SP as a stand-alone unit, but I bet a lot of this audio is from other sources)
I'm thinkin of getting one of these for live sampling/looping with my band. So it has a line in I can plug my guitar/mic/synth into and loop, then sequence, yeah?
Technically no, you can't live loop, you have to record the samples which is a start and stop process. It does have a line in for those things, you just can't make them loop live, you have to pre record them. I think the 555 has a live looper though...
This is quite impressive. So you are sampling into one SP-404 and the tracks are constructed and sequenced entirely on that device? How do you finally record....just out onto a stereo track? Or do send out each track and then mix and master in Pro Tools or something similar?
i am thinking about purchasing a 404, i only hesitate because i do not own a laptop and my friend keeps telling me ill need one to use a sampler. could you help me out? what equipment and/or programs do you run through?
not at all. you just need anything that makes noise. anything with an audio output yo can plug into it. you don't need software at all. you can use it, but don't need it by any means. a lot of the stuff i do is just guitar and stuff sampled from other media.
dude i love this. I just downloaded your album, and the sense of nostalgia is immediate and profound, it's not some abstract or fake remembrance of childhood. I'm really curious though, did you make those samples yourself?
@earlyfailures yeah just in general do you make the drum beats and record live instruments as samples or do you just have a massive record collection or something hah.
@silentsun22 my record collection for sampling is pretty modest, if i don't like them i usually just pass them to someone else because i get them pretty cheap. anything guitar or guitar sounding is played by me and sampled, same for most synth sounds. a lot of drum sounds are sampled and combined etc i suppose. but theres a fair share of those i make also.
I love your music, its a work of art. I really want to get hold of your album but its all in dollars. I'd sure use your music for film makers. Amazing x
@simlishbitch thanks dude, i really appreciate it- not sure what you mean its all in dollars? you can download the album for free on bandcamp or just google it i think its a few other places...
@earlyfailures Thanks it worked and I now have your two albums. There so inspiring, can I ask what it says at the start of 'Duck' because I do a lot of art and I drew an image to your text. if you could tell me that would be great, thankyou
@42darklord photobooth. just switched it to video, plugged in th 404 to the audio input jack then switched preferences in photobooth from internal microphone ot internal input.
@ncgtr make them using instruments. people too often think "where do you get samples" like you just throw together some downloaded sounds. that wouldn't be making music. you just gotta get creative.
This track is really really awesome.... until about 2:00 you lost me a bit with the drums, I feel like if they were more of a slow groove in the beginning it would have been cool, but.... Do you quantize the beats? I think that might be the problem, because the beat doesn't sound as organic as opposed to the beat earlier.
Just thought I'd put in my 2 cents, great track regardless!
@zackamundo22 it sounds exactly how i wanted it to, it is perfectly on beat, just very syncopated and complex, i would explain each note and the polyrhythms, but i'd rather just leave it to the listener to figure out. thanks though dude.
@earlyfailures Oh sorry if you took it the wrong way, I was just throwin' that out there, you make great music, all your tracks are great, I'll be buyin' your cd tomorrow. Well, digitally!
@zackamundo22 nah dude, i just hear that a lot and wish i could sound it out to them in real life because it frustrates me when someone can't groove to it like i want them too haha. no worries though!
@earlyfailures Do you ever listen to any downtempo, ambient stuff? Like hammock, or Actress, or Boards of Canada? Like... The beginning of this song on the album reminds me of it a lot.
@earlyfailures hahaha, well its okay, those guys are amazing, and tons of people love watts.. even the guys from south park animated stuff to his speeches.. but hes amazing, i hope more people use him in music, for he really appreciated music himself, and even calls the meaning of life to be that everyone should sing and dance
@smitty010493 naw son! yeah i used to use a lot of alan watts samples. actually the first full track i ever completed was pretty much an alan watts remix lol. BUT FUCK ALAN WATTS SON! he aint shit. hes amusing when you're in high-school, but you'll grow out of it and you'll be embarrassed by how seriously you took what his punk ass has to say. He was as rigid and caught up as anybody ever was. need LESS ALAN WATTS! and MORE CHRIS TUCKER SAMPLES!!!!
thanks man! If you mean how did i record the sound for this video then i just used an RCA to 1/8th inch to plug the 404 into the input on my macbook pro then recorded the sound with the video in photobooth.
If you mean the entire album, then it was recorded through a mic processor into pro tools and mastered in pro tools.
@earlyfailures You'r welcome mate. I downloaded your stuff from Bandcamp, and i've been revising with it on. It's really good.
Put some more videos under Blithe Field so you're easier to find.
Have you heard for Mum? the icelandic band? Listen to "Green Grass of Tunnel", and "we have a map of the piano". it's the closest thing i've heard to your stuff, but as i said your stuff is pretty unique.
Really look forward to your new record!
Take care, and oh please do listen to them suggestions!
@earlyfailures Great stuff! I could swear that snare in Bible school is referencing a now deceased rapper but in any case regardless of whether it is or not all your tracks sound great. I'm glad I stumbled onto this!
@dopeset2 thanks dude, not sure what you mean by the snare...i think its a snare from a random funk record layered with a rimshot but i could be wrong, i made that beat a while ago. I'm glad you found it too 8)
@earlyfailures Cool, check out the snare that starts off in Biggie Smalls "Dead Wrong". They sound very similar...not sure if easy mo b did that beat but perhaps he got that snare from the same place?
Is really every sound on this track (exept for the drums and lecture) guitar?
I've downloaded everything I could from your myspace and it's one of the best things I've heard in times, I think this is really refreshing music, looking forward to your next record.
thanks a lot, I really appreciate it. the album is completely recorded and pretty much mastered now. Just waiting to screenprint the sleeves and it will be ready.
@ummreid i don't like the sequencer, i didn't want to do anything else over it i like the simplicity, and hand tapping out beats is the true way of the SP
Love it. Had my head bobbing. Probably going to be one of my favorites (along with Three Laments) Definetly doing good. Are you ever going to tell us where you get your samples from? I'm really interested in that. You have really odd vocal excerpts and I love em.
@Omicron1293 thanks a lot man thats the most feedback i've gotten in a while!
if you're talking about solely vocal samples i could tell you where each one came from on the last album/ splits since then, but this one specifically is from an alan watts lecture
I love this song. I like your old stuff too (three laments is one of my favorites) but this is kinda taking things in a new direction. You're keeping a lot of the atmosphere and adding some head knodding. You're feeling up a lot of the empty space and I definetly like it. Youre going in a more RJD2/Dj Shadow type thing but without the DJ edge and a more quirkiness. I'm really looking forward to the new full length can't wait to download it.
maybe the real way of the sp but the retarded way if u wanna make music thats actually in time, this tune being a good example of why you should sequence it
that messed up beat at the end is the one that gets me

It's pretty unique. There's something nostalgic about it, and the filtering is really musical, it's not just an effect/ texture.
It's a shame the sp-404 videos here are mainly hihop/ euphoric trance.

@wantmohr instruments. records. mostly instruments.
earlyfailures 2 years ago
instead of just working in sample mode why didn't you just write multiple patterns so you could do other things while they are playing?
ummreid 2 years ago
@ummreid i don't like the sequencer, i didn't want to do anything else over it i like the simplicity, and hand tapping out beats is the true way of the SP

@Omicron1293
well I actually have to make it first, it was pretty much like "if someone wants to rap i will record a rough draft"
i havn't actually recorded it for the album yet

This is wonderful, looking forward to your full length album.

@vanillacokeclock
thanks dude, good to hear from you
earlyfailures 2 years ago
No problem.
I don't know I just think it'd be nice if you listed your samples because it's always interesting to see where they come from.
I'll have to google Alan Watts haha
Oh and I rap but I've never recorded before.
Any recommendations for recording equipment/software?
And I'd definetly like to collab with you someday. I love your beats haha

Love it. Had my head bobbing. Probably going to be one of my favorites (along with Three Laments) Definetly doing good. Are you ever going to tell us where you get your samples from? I'm really interested in that. You have really odd vocal excerpts and I love em.
Keep up the good work!
Omicron1293 2 years ago
@Omicron1293 thanks a lot man thats the most feedback i've gotten in a while!
if you're talking about solely vocal samples i could tell you where each one came from on the last album/ splits since then, but this one specifically is from an alan watts lecture
earlyfailures 2 years ago
I love this song. I like your old stuff too (three laments is one of my favorites) but this is kinda taking things in a new direction. You're keeping a lot of the atmosphere and adding some head knodding. You're feeling up a lot of the empty space and I definetly like it. Youre going in a more RJD2/Dj Shadow type thing but without the DJ edge and a more quirkiness. I'm really looking forward to the new full length can't wait to download it.
Keep up the great work!

nice work, H1. no sequencer - the real Way of the SP.
faunaflage 2 years ago
maybe the real way of the sp but the retarded way if u wanna make music thats actually in time, this tune being a good example of why you should sequence it
BigBaggaBlues 2 years ago
yeah, tell that to madlib.
