its a tiger swallowtail........note how it looks like bird shit. try poking it and it should stick out these orange membranous horns and they smell really bad. all swallowtails have this adaptation. so if a predator tries to eat it it sticks them out

I once saw a caterpillar similar to that one in my garden. I thought it was a toy, too, untill I picked it up and moved. I was like "AHH" and dropped it. It had a big spike on it's behind.
