I do agree that the graduation rules are very very very strict, and Suzanne Lukas was very out of line with not giving Justin his diploma, But he didn't follow the rules, however, he did sign the contract, and if he or his parents, or any other of the seniors had a problem with the contract, they should have brought it up in the graduation meetings. They did what they said they wouldn't, so technically, they deserves what they got.
The problem here was that you are NOT supposed to wear any chords in graduation... Not sure why, if they give them to you at Senior Last Assembly, but they tell you in all the graduation meetings they have, you aren't allowed to wear them. Another reason was because he was showboating. Justin made this all about him, When really, all of the press should have been on Tyler Lamey, because he was the one who did nothing and got kicked out of the entire ceremony. There were hundreds of relatives (parents, siblings, etc) in that audience waiting to see their own student graduate, not see a grandstanding Justin Denney bowing, blowing kisses, and other such nonsense. At the same time, there was a long line of students (in alphabetical order after "D" for "Denny") still waiting to receive their diplomas. Delays like that caused by Justin Denney were the problem, not the rules.

Oh, come on. Use a little common sense. Why should anything happen to the teacher for enforcing the rules established by the school and agreed to in writing by each graduating student beforehand? Justin Denney knew exactly what those rules were before stepping up on that stage and deliberately ignored those rules. Thus, he deserved to be expelled from that ceremony as the rules clearly stated would happen as a result.

THE SCHOOL BOARD were the ones who wanted to make graduation ceremonies more strict. Back in '05 the ceremonies were typical HS graduations...beach balls, silly strings, dancing on stage, etc...but some went too far and the principal was sprayed with silly string in the face by a student. After that when the school board met, they blamed the principal and the superintendent for letting it get so far out of control.
After that the contract was introduced in '06. The school board wanted it.
Please go to the local news station sites of Portland, Maine and you can watch a link of last night's school board meeting, and you'll see that there was much more to the story than what the media was putting out.

I didn't say he wasn't honoring his parents. the problem is that if you let everyone do their own celebration while getting their diploma then you are asking for a major fiasco. Why couldn't the kid follow the rules? He will have to follow the rules later in life to keep a job even if he doesn't like the rules. So I guess it was a good lesson for him on obeying rules. What is it with superintendents thinking they can play god? Something very similar happened during my High School graduation ceremony some 6 years ago. Not to me, but the poor kid who put his hands up in the air as if to signify victory was escorted from the rest of the group and forced to sit next to the superintendent. He was mentally handicapped too!

The ceremony is more for your family than for the students. I'm sure most students wouldn't mind receiving their diploma's in homeroom on the last day (I surely would not have minded).
The school can put whatever behavior restrictions that they want, it is THEIR ceremony (that they are doing for the students/family). And it is up to their discretion whether to eject a student from the ceremony or refuse to hand him the paper.

You first say that the school is doing for the students and family, in order words, they don't have to do this, but they choose to. It's a ceremony FOR them, which means it IS their moment. I think this is an example of trying to correct a problem and perhaps going a bit to far to do it. Apparently the graduation ceremonies at that school over the past several years were going beyond typical stuff that people do at graduation. It was getting really wild and pressure was being applied to the leadership to do something about it. Just like humans can be, we often swing the pendulum back too far the other way when trying to fix something. I think that's what happened here.

Okay, he was not the only student that walked out of there without a diploma, right? So what are they supposed to do now? I would understand if they are denied the diploma during the ceremony. But mail it to them or something. Give them their diploma. Event though they misbehaved, they still earned their diploma. Now, this student in particular, he was just unfortunate because Suzanne Lukas was already angry and she took it out on him. However, they should give them all their diplomas

There were hundreds of relatives (parents, siblings, etc) in that audience waiting to see their own student graduate, not see a grandstanding Justin Denney bowing, blowing kisses, and other such nonsense. At the same time, there was a long line of students (in alphabetical order after "D" for "Denny") still waiting to receive their diplomas. Delays like that caused by Justin Denney were the problem, not the rules.

No, he's just a kid who deserved respect from the school as he REPRESENTED THEM in athletes. Oh, come on. Use a little common sense. Why should anything happen to the teacher for enforcing the rules established by the school and agreed to in writing by each graduating student beforehand? Justin Denney knew exactly what those rules were before stepping up on that stage and deliberately ignored those rules. Thus, he deserved to be expelled from that ceremony as the rules clearly stated would happen as a result.

At my high school graduation, I can't remember one person doing anything other than walking up, getting the degree, and shaking the hand of the principal. It's people who did outrageous acts on the stage who are really the cause of this, not what Denny did!

THE SCHOOL BOARD were the ones who wanted to make graduation ceremonies more strict. Back in '05 the ceremonies were typical HS graduations...beach balls, silly strings, dancing on stage, etc...but some went too far and the principal was sprayed with silly string in the face by a student. After that when the school board met, they blamed the principal and the superintendent for letting it get so far out of control.
After that the contract was introduced in '06. The school board wanted it.

Why do people have such a hard time following rules? He obviously signed the contract. I don't think the point and blowing the kiss was out of line, but the bow certianly was. a graduation is a ceremony that should be conducted with respect and honor. Maybe the superintendant over reacted a little too much. Also the School never stated what the punishment would be if rules were broken and I see a problem there.

I didn't say he wasn't honoring his parents. the problem is that if you let everyone do their own celebration while getting their diploma then you are asking for a major fiasco. Why couldn't the kid follow the rules? He will have to follow the rules later in life to keep a job even if he doesn't like the rules. So I guess it was a good lesson for him on obeying rules. Hate it for the boy, but he should have used better judgment.

The PRESS is being extremely DISHONEST here. This student was NOT denied a diploma. Instead, he was only denied participation in remainder of graduation ceremony after violating rules informed of & agreed to in advance, picking up his diploma at the school administration office later. Regardless, it's amazing how many here have fallen for the media's deception, ranting against the teacher. Given this, it's not hard to see how people can so easily be manipulated into wars or virtually anything.

But, part of the fun of graduating is recieving the diploma board. Yes, maybe he was able to pick it off at the office, but the problem was the school authorities did not allow him to participate in what he had worked 13 years for. This might not be the best analogy, but what if one got kicked out of their wedding? Sure, they can go and get the papers signed still, but they missed the moment that they've been waiting for.

Everybody should stop giving steward thumbsdown. He is right. The students should just walk across like normal adults. If everyone took the time to do a personal celebration dance or whatever while they walk across the stage, it would take forever and make the school look bad. The ceremony is a formal event, and everyone should walk across the same. He still got the diploma, just not during the ceremony because he broke the contract.

What is it with superintendents thinking they can play god? Something very similar happened during my High School graduation ceremony some 6 years ago. Not to me, but the poor kid who put his hands up in the air as if to signify victory was escorted from the rest of the group and forced to sit next to the superintendent. He was mentally handicapped too!
It's just crazy that in 4 seconds one person thinks they can/should strip away a diploma after 12 years of bullshit work.

The ceremony is more for your family than for the students. I'm sure most students wouldn't mind receiving their diploma's in homeroom on the last day (I surely would not have minded).
The school can put whatever behavior restrictions that they want, it is THEIR ceremony (that they are doing for the students/family). And it is up to their discretion whether to eject a student from the ceremony or refuse to hand him the paper.
So, you are wrong, it is NOT your moment.

Well...While your logic isn't wrong, the conclusion you came up with is contradicting your reasoning. You first say that the school is doing for the students and family, in order words, they don't have to do this, but they choose to. It's a ceremony FOR them, which means it IS their moment. If they didn't want to do this in the first place, they don't have to, so why make it into a troublesome affair? As long as no harm is being done AND it's going in a timely manner, it should be allowed.

it is very much The STUDENTS moment. They worked for 4 years to get to that point. One student takes 4 years to get where they are on graduation day. Its not the schools ceremony, the school hosts lt of course but the moment belongs to the student, plain and simple. They did the work, the went through 4 years of BS, l think they should be, to an extent, allowed to do whatever they want. because they will never see that moment again.....the SCHOOL will see lt mulitple times.

He still shouldn't have pulled out those home-made cords. The only cords to be worn were for academic honors that the school issued to the students...not home-made cords. He hid those under his robe/collar because he knew he wasn't allowed to have it...the others who wore cords had them on their gown from the beginning. He broke the contract once that happened. Nevermind the blowing of the kiss or the pointing, which still broke the rules...

I think this is an example of trying to correct a problem and perhaps going a bit to far to do it. Apparently the graduation ceremonies at that school over the past several years were going beyond typical stuff that people do at graduation. It was getting really wild and pressure was being applied to the leadership to do something about it. Just like humans can be, we often swing the pendulum back too far the other way when trying to fix something. I think that's what happened here.
