Sub-genres of music help people find bands similar to artists that they already like. Doom metal is worlds apart from black metal, which sounds incredibly different from power metal, which is nothing like death metal, etc.

doom is the oldest form of metal.

Steppenwolf, or The crazy world of Arthur Brown, to mention just a few.

When Steppenwolf released their song Born to be wild, it helped coining the phrase heavy metal.

When bands like those originally rose to fame, they were all called rock. Later on, the NWOBHM, which grew big alongside Punk rock, helped shape trash metal, like Diamond Head, Metallica, and SLAYER.

NWOBHM also lead to the 1st and 2nd waves of black metal.

Very good album, though not really Doom. Some bands that come to mind are This Misery Garden, A Perfect Circle, and On a Bridge of Dust. All three very good bands, though not necessarily Doom either. I'm sure you've already heard of A Perfect Circle, but the other two are less known, but still very awesome.
