Any people who are not willing to send their warrior class to defend liberty with their very lives, that is a civilization that is utterly without value. I adjure each of you to learn the difference between being "pro-war" (very odd term, as no sane person is) and being pro liberty. Liberty is humankind's most valuable gift. Only idiots give it away without shedding their last drop of blood.
@TheSamTerrazas No, I'm just calling people who follow a demonstrably false religion what they are. You realize that no Native Americans have any Semite blood in their DNA, right? You reailze chariots, horses, cattle, among countless things didn't exist in the Americas pre-Columbus, right? That's just the tip of the iceberg on the falseness of the Book of Mormon.
Sounds to me like you don't know your facts and can't think objectively.
eh, Conservative, mormon propaganda... I can tell that the left are depicted as the villians in his novel. Sorry, Card fans, i hate Orson's politics and this seems like a pro-war story.
People have been doing "dystopian future" novels for a very long time. Think of Aldous Huxley, George Orwell, Ayn Rand... I don't think this sounds like it is pro-war. I think he, like many other Western authors before him, want to explore the possibility of a world without personal liberty.
Of course, I haven't read it yet. So I don't know what it emphasizes.
And in all honesty, Rand's writing probably was propaganda. But very well-written, insightful propoganda.
This book is great in that some people today are extreem enogh to make this happen but I don't think Card did a good job of making it believable or attaching readers to the main character(s) like he normaly does.
I just read on Wiki that he's writing a novel set just after Children of the Mind that ties in Bean. It's called Shadows in Flight. We'll see if its any good. Personally I didn't like the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Ender books as much as the others.

I am going to call out a wolf who wears sheep's clothing who hides behind his religion to avoid criticism and trivializes the struggles of the people who defend our country in his "novels". A man content on playing political baiting games, a man who has no understanding of the toll of war, I could care less what the pack of morons who read his books think.
Only 12 year olds and English teachers have it instilled in them to overly worry about puncuation. With all probably due respect to that profession, who the hell wants to read the book Pip? It has so much dam punctuation that it's impossible to read and is very boring also. Once you move on to high school and real life you'll find that nobody, including teachers, cares about punctation as much as they do about content. What matters is Card's books are good stories that explore moral issues.
I'm sorry, did you just complain about the proper use of grammar?
Such is to be expected of someone who's obviously an Obama voter. To have an opinion and speak so rashly about it without any real thought.
Perhaps if you spent some time learning, instead of just playing like you already know everything, you'd have a rational thought, and might be more interested in reading good books, regardless of how much "boring" punctuation there is.
Actually I was referring to the person I was quoting as the Obama supporter, it was an affront on his apparent distaste for proper use of punctuation.
I just finished the audio book for Empire. I was very disturbed by the similarity to today. But the afterword was very well stated. I suggest it for everyone. The book also lost credibility with me when Card legitimized Fox News. But lets face it, conservative America watches Fox. To reach them today, Fox has to be involved. Why they feel this way is another post but read Rush. But bottom line, as a liberal, a patriot, and an American, I will not allow this to happen to my country.EVER
You do know that Card is a democrat right? He does have some conservative leanings though. I guess you could say he's a moderate democrat. I feel that all media is uncredible, it's gotten so irrational and biased over the years that I can't stand to watch CNN or Fox News. If you like Card I suggest reading some of his columns on the World Watch website. It will give you more of an insite on his political standings.
i second tat badboy707, i saw this book at te store and reading the back of it, it sounded a little preachy and now that i got to hear him talk about it a bit im totally buying it first thing tomorrow (f*** the wheel of time it takes me forever to read those but i fly thru scott card stuff in a couple days) The enemies gate is down!!!
Hey, I've been thinking about reading this for a while... How would you compare this series to Arthur C. Clarke, George Orwell, Michael Crichton, and Frank Herbert? Because they're the scifi/political authors I like most.. P.S. GOP vs Dems??? That's interesting but hilarious to anyone who realizes that in the REAL political scale they're identical.
Card is hardly a neo-con...this book is an amazing call for moderation, cool heads, and bi-partisan politics in America. I disagree with jakey719...as I don't think Octavian is the true aggressor...another factor in the book is the moral question of whether his actions in creating the civil war are justified to prevent further bloodshed by extremist mentalities on both sides.
Looks promising, but then ALL of Orson Scott Card's books are promising and certainly deliver. I also loved Ender's Game with a passion. Amazing series. He's one of my favorite authors of all time, hands down.
That came out a little garbled. I want to say that I love almost everything else I've read by Mr.Card. It seems like he let himself go with this one and needed to vent. But he even made Fox News the only credible news source in the story! That was a little too much.
I base that on our support for right wing governments in central and south america, the rise of the private militias such as blackwater, and the conservative supported universities feeding young ideologues into our government. I believe that the protagonists would have been more likely to morph into death squad leaders attacking political enemies of a republican white house than good ol' boys dedicated to defending freedom.
He positions himself firmly in the red-state camp, making a silicon valley/Bill Gates character the aggressor. I believe that in a civil war based on right-left divisions, the attack would come from the right.
I enjoyed it. I got past the more hard-core sci-fi bits to Card's own tribute to the story, his wonderful human analysis.
And I think the coolest part of the story is that it's a kind of fan service to Orson Scott Cards inspiration: Asimov's Foundation trilogy. Whereas Foundation was the Fall of the Roman Empire set in the future, Empire is the Start of the Roman Empire.
Overall, it's not his best work ever, but it's damn good enough to get a 10/10 in my book.

I always find punctuation to be an effective means of communicating an idea. Periods and commas help you to avoid sounding like a 12 year old.
