Great video. I own a Series 1 M. When it comes to going fast I also own an 11 GT3 RS (a stick of course). Point is it a great car is not always about 0-60 times. This M is perhaps the best balanced car I have ever driven. Bought it over M3 (and up coming M5) for too many reasons to list. What I will say is there has never been a time since I pressed start that I haven't had a ear to ear smile or a times had to pull over because I was laughing my ass off. This is what a great car is all about!

Its a MANUAL transmission with a pump attached to it to control shifting as apposed to clutch pedal. Its not an automatic transmission and does not use a torque converter. The DCT is a more complicated setup but the SMG II in the e46 M3 was the exact same transmission except with a pump attached. All internals were identical.

Most of this presenter's rants are entertaining but not informative. What he should be talking about is the inherent weakness in the N54 engine during track duty. Like all 3 Series with this engine (ie. 335is currently), the 1M Coupe will suffer from overheated turbos and subsequent leach of power when pushed hard round a track. Sure the car is great for the boy racers on the street who want to drift/autocross but look at the car/engine BMW uses for the ALMS series...not this one.

@nate5388 an auto transmission has a torque converter, the DCT doesnt, it has a clutch. and dont get me wrong i like full manuals too, truth be told, they are more fun than the DCT, but not by much. the way the DCT fires off shifts is amazing. its neck snappingly fast. the DCT is the only automated clutch transmission i would buy. all my other cars are manuals except my 750il, but thats a luxury car. its more practical so if my wife wants to drive the M, she doesnt need to manually shift it

What a waste of life. I don't fully understand why having a superior transmission is being a poser.
Average manual shift time is about .5 seconds and the DCT does the same thing in .03-.2 (m3post.com testing). Lets do simple math shall we.
Im not going to count all the upshifts on a lap at the ring but you gaining about a second on average every 3 shifts. Do math bud.
And those cut scenes look like a high school kid threw it together on windows movie maker or something.

@Chaser350Z Being that im in the automotive industry, You will be asking that same exact question when that transmission decides to fail on you one day, where you will be stuck replacing the transmission, instead of a very possible rebuild of a manual. I have seen soooo many Automatic transmissions fail, I will never own an Automatic Trans equipped Vehicle

@Shelby175 Do you know what a Sequential Manual Gearbox is or how it works?
Its a MANUAL transmission with a pump attached to it to control shifting as apposed to clutch pedal. Its not an automatic transmission and does not use a torque converter. The DCT is a more complicated setup but the SMG II in the e46 M3 was the exact same transmission except with a pump attached. All internals were identical.
In the automotive industry... you mean you wash cars at a dealership or something?

I was more or less getting at the fact that anyone can drive a automobile equipped with DCT or SMG transmissions. When most people see that third pedal, they get scared, lol. As far as being in the auto Ind. I replace camshafts, engine teardowns, engine and transmission removals...etc.

Hey, condescending prick, if you want a manual tranny, knock yourself out but don't tell me I'm a poser because half my driving is in city traffic and I am TIRED of being on and off the clutch. Ever been stuck in a 45 min traffic jam with a manual? Not fun.
I've been driving BMW's since you were in diapers and all but one was a manual so I think I'm capable of making my own decision whether I want a DCT or not. BTW, a driver has a lot more control of their car with both hands on the wheel.

Most of this presenter's rants are entertaining but not informative. What he should be talking about is the inherent weakness in the N54 engine during track duty. Like all 3 Series with this engine (ie. 335is currently), the 1M Coupe will suffer from overheated turbos and subsequent leach of power when pushed hard round a track. Sure the car is great for the boy racers on the street who want to drift/autocross but look at the car/engine BMW uses for the ALMS series...not this one.

@nate5388 an auto transmission has a torque converter, the DCT doesnt, it has a clutch. and dont get me wrong i like full manuals too, truth be told, they are more fun than the DCT, but not by much. the way the DCT fires off shifts is amazing. its neck snappingly fast. the DCT is the only automated clutch transmission i would buy. all my other cars are manuals except my 750il, but thats a luxury car. its more practical so if my wife wants to drive the M, she doesnt need to manually shift it

This video isn't even remotely funny, they just take the auto vs manual thing way too far. We get it, you don't like manual, however others out there didn't grow up in a "car focused household" and were not taught to drive with a clutch from an early age. I grew up learning on auto trucks, a few years ago some friends taught me to drive stick but I would still buy an auto because I find it a much more enjoyable (less jerky, and more mature) driving experience.

I have to agree that sticks are more traditional but in todays market, the buyers are mostly car illiterate, meaning if they can do something stupid with a car they will, say leave it in gear, or downshift at the wrong time, multi clutch transmissions allow for the feel of a manual sans the difficulty of use in a daily life.
if a guy having to multitask in a car, the option of full auto or pseudo manual help them live their life and have some fun.full manuals should still be option of course.

Hell, it was once popular to complain about ABS systems, now it's considered a necessity on most performance vehicle. Will you be my friend? I've been saying for years that if a transmission can shift itself (automatically?) in any way, that is an automatic. "Automated manual" is an oxymoron. Something cannot be both manual and automatic. Torque converter versus clutch(es) is irrelevant.

let's say if you are given a choice of a m3 e46 CSL and a 1M coupe..which one will you choose? i'm sorry, this guy would prefer 1M coupe over CSL because CSL has a SMG transmission. This review really sucks. It is trying to praise 1M by dissing M3's transmission? lol! I've owned many cars with manual transmission, and now driving a M3 e46 ZCP with SMG. NOt a day that I regret.
