My hunch back then was that the Coca-Cola Company had been trying to tout Coke's being not so sweet as Pepsi in a desperate attempt to overcome a deficit in sales, and when that didn't work, Coca-Cola threw in the towel and jumped on the bandwagon with its sweeter version of Coke.

I think the reason Pepsi SEEMS sweeter is because of the use of vanilla vs "vanillin" in Coke vs. Pepsi. However actual sugar wise, they are pretty similar I think.
