guys the thing you have to understand is that this movie isnt a horror movie. its a psychological thriller. i agree some scenes in this movie are quite disturbing but this movie is more sad than disturbing. This is real life, people have gone through this during the Vietnam War. Troopers were put on this drug and the quite sad thing is that everything you thought you had was just an illusion

this is based loosely on the LSD experientment that the US government did to some of its own soldiers. They gave them drugs like PCP and LSD without their conscent. MKULTRA...... This movie was out way before Silent Hill.

Some think the ending and the alternate ending could be Western and Eastern religious interpretations of how to cope with the expulsion from the Garden of Eden (symbolized by Gabe - the angelic guard of the paradise that was lost...)/ fall from grace respectively. Not too surprisingly, the screenwriter, Bruce Joel Coen, is Jewish but also practices Buddhism.

This film is actually based on elements of truth. They gave soliders PCP as an experiment and the results was a complete blood bath. They turned on each other. Its a violent trip and the results just aren't worth it.

The producers of the game said that they acknowledge this movie for its fear production in a more psychological way and also that they were inspired to make the games because of this movie. This is by far one of the most frightening films ever made! The first 20 minutes alone are completely nerve-wracking.  For me the finest horror films are psychological, making you believe there is something more gruesome and terrifying present than is already there and this really achieves that. It is too bad that it did not become the commercial hit it deserved to be. Hopefully, more people get a chance to watch it.

HE DIED IN NAM. he never came home. the demonic visions,etc., were a culmination of reaching the truth about what happened that day in nam.genius the way chemist enters his dream to explain it all.how do you write a screenplay for this storyline?! brilliant and underated.

he died in nam. all the phantasmagoria is going on in his head before he actually dies. he needs to come to grips with why his platoon bud knifes him. he meets the chemist who sets him free by explaining ladder. he can now die at peace. (if youre afraid of dieing,etc, quote from louie). he can now ascend to heaven with his already dead son. the crux of the story though, is all taking place in his mind. great concept! how do you come up with a storyline like this? underated and misunderstood film
