You all need to watch this race posted by partymanners in July 2009, it's in parts 1 thru 5, but PART 5 is the one to watch and it will settle this ridiculous argument once and for all. Slow motion shows clearly JUST what happened. Eddie Arcaro, Howard Cosell, Jim McKay, and Eddie Arcaro passes the final judgment.
G.R. was ''mugged'' in this race.cordero was known for dirty tricks like this. watching it on t.v. you could see he was swinging his whip way out..she just stopped running. afraid of a ''girl''?
1980 Preakness - Codex v. Genuine Risk posted by partymanners. The point is I've posted the actual quote fm GenuineRisk1's conversation w/Cordero where he blatantly admitted what he did and if that wasn't enough he referred to this filly as "the bitch" what more do you want. I lived it, she won the Derby and I was so excited. I was 37 years old. Howard Cossell interviewed Cordero after, there was a hearing the next wk, her owners the Firestones, presented an official protest as did Vasquez.
Cordero pushed Genuine Risk to the far outside.Codex's lead foot never made the turn when he was near the rail. When you watch them going into the apex Codex never turned until he was through the apex. Oh heck yeah that was deliberate.Cordero heard Vasquez then saw him and did what he does best.He knocked GR off stride then headed into the sunset. There is no question in my mind that Cordero used his experience over Vasquez.
Cordero was just a better "stretch" jockey and a horse does not get DQ a lot on the outside turns. If the "rub" would have been on the inside that is when they usually get DQ. They jockey has to close the lane (inside) prior to the curve or he gets DQ (on the inside).
On the outside, the turn and the natural force carries a horse a bit to the outside and also the way in which Codex had lots of run in him at the end; probably made then decide not to DQ him.
Posted by GenuineRisk1 on other video:I saw the race in person and was upset the stewards did nothing...a few uears later I asked Codero about the race. He said "I knew if I hit the bitch (GR) in the face and took her wide, she's stop" Everyone saw it, but the Stuards did nothing.. I lost total respect for Codero from then on...and have told him to his face..not that he cares...
also if you watch especially the version posted by partymanners, he starts coming OUT FM rail BEFORE he even gets to turn, so any claim of momentum causing him to drift out just isn't even worth discussing. He was on the rail in the lead, the best place to be, not giving up any time. Even Dave Anderson says at that point, "Cordero is running out in middle of track" that's not verbatim. Sounds like he knew what was happening. Awsidooger on other video also points out crowd booing.
no way: DQ; Codex was in full momentum turning if anything is dq she pushed him in; Grisk should have been taking inside, codex was going way too fast n could only turn at least 4wide, the move she was trying to do is for the belmont "the big sweep turn" not for short pimlico turns; see curlin breederscup, watch what he does to HardS at the turn to cut StSense out, that is what jacinto was trying to do but he didn't have the speed at the turn.
Yo have to be kidding, she PUSHED him in. Are you going to say next centrifugal force made him drift out? He was in the lead on the rail. How can you watch either video here of this race and not think he drifted out. I can remember my father saying, "uh, oh, she's been hit." he turned TV off he was disgusted. AND I read recently Cordero saying "the feminists and others hated me. I knew if I hit the bitch she'd stop running." there's the proof. Even Red Smith said "she had her purse lifted"

I've seen the other video and the angle shown in this one seems to show that there was no foul, that's all. The cool was simply in response to the new angle, that's all.
So the quote fm GenuineRisk1 who asked Cordero about incident "I knew if I hit the bitch (GR) in the face and took her wide, she's stop" means nothing? Her owners and Vasquez her jockey, all filed official protests, means nothing. 27 yrs ago the owners, jockey, network Howard Cosell who interviewed Cordero, all were hallucinating. Jesus, he was on the rail in the lead he ends up in middle of track !and he SAID it.. "I knew if I hit the bitch (GR) in the face and took her wide, she's stop"
I tell you now: I don't deserve this. You've steadfastly refused my kindness 4 the longest time without telling me why, and now this? 2clarify again: from angle shown in this video it doesn't look like Cordero hit her, whether he said he did or not. cont
cont bon, Don't understand why you're so impassioned about this as it relates 2 me. Don't know whole lot about this controversy, but I can say that I just don't know, that the stewards had tough call. Have talked 2 cf about it and he feels same way.
It's true, I do feel that the stewards had a VERY tough call to make, at the time, and with the evidence they had before them after the race. But I have to say, Cordero saying what he did makes me angry, too. To state what he did is despicable and is flat-out cheating; that goes without saying. If the stewards had known of Cordero's mindset back then, I'm sure the foul claim would have been allowed, with GR placed first. It's just too bad Cordero didn't mouth off about it back then. Peace.
I understand that completely and agree that the statement he made seems to indicate he had malice in his heart. What hurts me is that all I know about this whole thing comes from just watching the other video and this one. I am not and have never claimed to be well-versed in this particular subject at all, but I did think it was cool that you posted this alternate angle of the race to get another look, and I said so. Then bon, who ignores me all other times, gets on me for it. It's strange.
No, it doesn't mean anything. Cordero just floated her wide and intimidated her, all within the rules. He didn't strike her (he'd be DQed for that), but a horse is allowed to do what he did. The filly was just outclassed and outridden.
raygordon: Cordero quoted: "I knew if I hit the "BITCH" and took her wide she'd stop." Codex was on the rail, in the lead, look where he was when Cordero "hit the bitch and took her wide." Even w/this view you don't see what happened at the point seconds before they go into the complete turn, before we see the "daylight" between. A booing crowd knows. My Dad was no raving feminist but he said "uh oh... she's been hit" and turned TV off in disgust.

@carlykaiser hi, go to 1980 Preakness videos posted in July 2009 by partymanners, parts 1 thru 5, but part 5 is the one to watch. It's a darn shme, GR did the same as in KD, going wide circling the field coming to the front... she might won. Do you realize she is the only filly ever to run in all 3 TC races and PLACE in all 3. She didn't win Belmont, but in slop came up to finish between 2 colts and finished second. As was said GR was the real story of 1980 TC.
genuine risk would have won this race! she could have been the 1st filly to win the triple crown!

I just watched the race and all 3 commentators agreed
there should be a disqualification. One was Eddie
Arcaro. From what I saw it was not bearing out on her
so much as Cordero hitting her nose with a whip. It
was like after that, she did not even try to get
any closer to the horse in front of her.
JettRink50 4 years ago
Not even CLOSE to a DQ
1) Codex had the lead and could pick his path
2) There is NO WAY it affected the order of finish as Codex had MUCH more left in the tank

have the tape of the race and close ups of the turn

Codex looked to have bore out into Genuine Risk in the final turn and hindered her drive.
Cordero was accused of cheating and hitting the filly with his whip as they came together.
