  • I remember...when. This was one time we knew each other.

  • Great job on this video for a very underrated song. BZ!

  • I think this song could have been on Threshpld of a dream. beautiful song. lyrics might be a bit weak in places. I think they chose Are you Sitting Comfortably over this one- similar chords even. still this is a very nice number..

  • I love this! Great idea with the LOTR stuff. Very nice!

  • One of their most obscure, yet best songs and one of my personal favorites

  • Caught Live, +5.....this is a beautiful song and easily forgotten with so many other great Moody Blues songs to concentrate on.

  • This is wonderful, and thanks for posting!!!

  • I had to just let you know how much I love this video and this song. I have the "Caught Live+5" CD but I never really appreciated this song until I saw your video. I watch this whenever I am stressed or unhappy, it always makes me smile (which is strange since it's such a sad song). I love the Moodies, Love LOTR, thanks so much.

  • @MagicsBlackShadow Thank you for your kind comments. I appreciate it. I love this song as well and never tire of hearing it. Whenever I used to listen, It would always make me think of LOTR. It just had that feel about it and the images just seemed to fit so well. I'm glad you enjoyed it. :-)

  • Fantastic job! So nice to know the fans of fantastic music like the Moodie Blues have the talent to put somthing like this together

  • Check out this video of "Marie" by Justin Hayward.

  • This is with a doubt, one of the most moving songs of all time. A style of music that todays music lacks. And sad to say that many people today can't really understand and they would just laugh at it. Because they are empty inside.

  • Another great Moodies song

  • I've watched this video many times and yet have not tired of ever seeing it. If only those that are so used to watching and listening to worthless songs , could hear and see. The garbage they so easily consume , might cause them to be overwelmed.

As stated before , thank you for this wonderful video.

  • This is great! I love the Moodies and Tolkien, so this is the best of both worlds for me. Oddly enough, I made a CD with songs that I believed to go well with LOR and this was one of them! And it had to do with Helm's Deep, too! I love the Faramir/Eowyn story and the movie didn't do it justice, although I love the actors that play them. They were perfect! Very good job!

  • This is so wonderful, I have a link to it on my desktop, it is that good. I saw the Moody Blues so many times in my youth and they are just as good now. No group even comes close to their eternal talent. They remind me of the best time and the best love of my life. Sure wish they would come to California again soon.

  • Thanks for the info. I found the CD at Amazon.

  • "Lucky Man" by Emerson, Lake & Palmer is in a very similar vein, and could be interpreted with the same images.

  • Normally I'm not fond of fan videos but this one does a lovely job of interpreting the lyrics. Very Tolkien indeed! Moodies are a huge favorite of mine, LOTR as well...nice symmetry!

  • This song was never played LIVE was it?? And I know of no other version ? And why wont someone COVER this...hmm..maybe the lyrics....not contemporary.

  • @DavelovesRealMusic Thiswas played live last night in Cardiff - we got to meet John Graeme and Justin which was fab and watched the sound check as well absolutely fabulous they just do not go out of fashion even though they have been around a while now and will always be top of the pops for a lot of people

  • @xMCR4EVAx During the show..or only in rehearsal? I am truly stunned they have ressurected this gem...I hope they play it in the USA

  • @xMCR4EVAx No it WAS NOT> I have checked with several sources and The Moody Blues did NOT play this song in cardiff or on ANY date. They have NEVER played this song livel. Why did you say that? I have double checked..tyhey did not play THIS in Cardiff.

  • @DavelovesRealMusic Although I don't believe they played this song in Cardiff....they have in fact played it live at least once that I am aware of. It was mentioned in a concert review from 1968 at the Paris Olympia that they performed it live. I also have a recording of it from the BBC where they performed it live. Well, probably pre-recorded....but it was a different version than from the album.

  • @JustinFan No they did NOT play this at all in 2010. Someone was just trying to be 'cute", false information. If they recorded this for the BBC why was it not included in the "moody Blues live at the BBC double CD.there were several songs done twice on that CD set so there was room to include it. I do not have a set list from Paris Olympia '68 so I take your word it was performed. I don't know why they stopped playing this and subjected fans to countless performances of "lean on Me" etc

  • Awesome.....perfect using the LOR's picts with this song.....Live +five is one of my fav albums....this song was the reason why!

  • It can also be found on a little known 2 record import called "A Dream" which chronicles everything from 66 to 69. I do believe this was on Derem, but not sure. Lots of uncharted material and decent B sides that never got heard. This is transitional Moodies at it's best. BTW, "What Am I Doing Here?" has always been one of my favs.

  • CAUGHT LIVE + 5....

wonderful live concert LP....has the memorable linse between songs of:

    My dog has fleas...

    Oh no he don't...

    Oh yes he does.....

Truly, these lines were "sung" by Michael Pinder and Justin Hayward between two of the songs.

  • Does anyone know if this song is available on a CD and if so which one.

I've been a Justin Hayward and Moody Blues fan since the first time I heard Knights In White Satin in 69, I've seen them in concert at least 10 times in my life time. They will always be one of favorites. I've never heard "What Am I Doing Here", it's a very haunting song.

  • I've only known it to be on

    CAUGHT LIVE +5

released in 1977. Last song on the LP.

  • @marieanntonette01

Besides Caught Live + 5, It is also available on the new SACD version of In Search of the Lost Chord and it was also included on Prelude.

  • @JustinFan Which album did this version come from? I have Prelude, but this version is almost a minute longer than the same piece from that album--extra instrumental/mellotron ending. Thanx. :)

  • @Inflec This version came from the SACD of 'In Search of the Lost Chord'. :)

  • This song is also on the CD " Prelude "

  • Thanks everyone, I found it at Amazon. Moody Blues fan.

  • @marieanntonette01 you can get this song on 'caught live + 5'..it's one of the +5 songs. You will like the other four too!

  • I would just love to see a Beatle, a Rolling Stone, or anyone in the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame try to make a song this great.

    Never in a million years.

  • Dear JustinFan, you are amazing! Thank you so much for posting this beautiful song. I have been a Moodies fan forever, they are my favorite band. Justin is my fave songwriter. I saw them in Mpls in 2009 and was blown away. I have the CL+5 album but don't remember this song, I guess I better go listen again. Just perfect, thanks and keep them coming!

  • What album was this on?

  • since i was 16 this voice has always calmed my heart

  • Beautiful song and video!

  • What a song!It always sends chills down my spine!WONDERFUL!!!!!!

  • This has to be one of the most deeply spiritual songs of all time with haunting meaningful lyrics.

A truly beautiful song from justin and the Moody Blues.

Every one's dreams is deep within find it and you will be free

    Thanks for posting this classic.

    Best wishes,

    Tony.

  • Throughout their history the Moodies have had some real sleepers that never made the "cut" for LP inclusion. A few did gems like this which was a "B" side to Cities and Mike Pinder's "Simple Game" which was included on "This Is". On the back of "This Is" is the statement that all the cuts were previously released on LPs. I called London Records NY office and asked "which album?" They didn't know! Since I caught it they sent me the Blue Jays talkie, autographed by JH & JL and Songwriter, signed!

  • There is a moodies b side album called Prelude which has all of these songs and more included.

  • Ozric.. it's a very difficult album to find.. and when you can.. rather expensive to purchase... but WELL worth owning if you CAN find and afford it!!

  • Lol, I found it about 15 years ago new for about 6 dollars in the cheapo cd bin. I still have it, but it has been through alot of spins and is in rough shape.

  • Well what i meant was.. try to find it now.... ;)) not so easy.. nor cheap

  • This is a beautiful composition!! drift away on a lost chord! perfection

  • Outstanding video for an underappreciated Hayward composition. Great stuff!

  • This video is from the extended version of "The Lord of thre Rings"

  • This is my favorite Moody Blues song of all time. Thank you so much for posting! This song has always been the elixir of any problem I've ever had.

  • After a year , still my favorite . Thanks for this wonderful work

  • how incredible match with the clips. brilliant jb

  • This is truly magnificent! I love this song.

  • I agree.

  • Everytime I watch this, I love it just as much as the first time I watched it. It's brand new each time and so beautiful.

    Thank you

  • agreed. beautiful

  • Nicely done.

  • Ooohhh, Ahhhh. I've been a Moody fan since the late 60s and a LotR Fan since 2001 - to see/hear them together is just ............ 5*****.

    Thanks!

  • This is my favourite Justin song. I just love it. Thank you for such a moving video. I watch it constantly.

  • This is brilliant, i have been a Moodys fan for many years and have never heard this song before, the video is perfect . Great work

  • Brilliant editing!!!!

  • I wish they could do Lord Of The Rings again with all nothing but Moody Blues music in it!

  • Enya is pretty good- but I must agree with you there! A lot of their songs would fit perfectly in the movie.

  • wouldn't that be awesome.. someone should do that.

  • Hadn't heard this song in 31 years until about a week ago. Now I listen to it a few times a day. Best song off of CL+5. Perfect job with the images here, JF. Pretty much the same as my "meditation" on this hauntingly beautiful song had always been. You've captured the essence very nicely! Amazing that his song was recorded in the 60's? Hayward is a musical genius, probably my all-time fave along with Roy Orbison.

  • Yes, this song was recorded in 1968 and was originally considered for inclusion on "In Search of the Lost Chord", but ended up being omitted. It wasn't released until 1977 when they included it on "Caught Live+ 5".

    It's a beautiful song....one of Justin's best in my opinion. And I agree....he is a musical genius.

  • I'm not doubting your knowledge, but I did my research in the past and this song was recorded in November 1968, which would have meant that In Search was already released? Therefore it would have been included on Threshold Of A Dream if anything. It sounds production wise that it would have fit into that album a lot better anyway.

  • This quote is from the booklet included in the recent SACD release of "In Search of the Lost Chord", where this version is taken from.

    See next post....

  • "Recorded at Decca Studio Number One, West Hampstead January 28th,, 1968.

Another excellent Justin Hayward composition, "What Am I Doing Here" was considered for inclusion on "In Search of the Lost Chord", but due to the excellence of the other material recorded and (Con't)

  • the time constraints of vinyl, it was omitted from the final running order. Subsequently revisited on November 17th, 1968 when further overdubs were added and a final mix undertaken, the song failed to secure a release until 1977 when it appeared on the "Caught Live + 5" collection. This version hails from the January recording sessions."

  • Finally a tip of the hat to genius Orbison

    Ton in Utica

  • dragonlover1955 EXCELLANT job of creating this video!!!!!!!!!!! I have every album the moody blues have done, they are my favorite band ever!!! I have been lucky enough to have seen them 4 times!!!I think they would also think your video is great!!!!

  • Thank you. :-)

  • It is so sad that there are no new young artists that can carry this type of beautiful music on into the future. I would guess that they need inspiration and there is nothing today that they can grasp . This is a beautiful video. You did an outstanding job. Thank you

  • Thank you. That's very kind of you to say. :-)

  • What to say that probably hasn't already been said in previous comments... I often wonder how familiar Justin, John, Ray, Graham, or Mike were with Tolkien? Would be interesting to hear from them whether they were ever inspired by Tolkien in any of their songwriting.

  • Yes, Justin has remarked that part of Tuesday Afternoon was inspired by Lord of the Rings.

"The trees are drawing me near, I've got to find out why, those gentle voices I hear, explain it all with a sigh", referring to the ents.

In an interview with Australian DJ Pete Rudder a few years ago, Justin was asked what inspired this song "What Am I Doing Here", he laughingly replied..."I think I was reading Lord of the Rings a bit too much!." :-)

  • Oh...I forgot to mention that I had made this video before he said that, so I was rather pleased that it might have actually inspired the song. :-)

  • RT: do you believe in love at first sight. yes i'm certain that it happens every time. ringo sang. does anyone believe in this. i do

  • You did a beautiful job on this! I loved it all the way through!

  • nice *****

to musicadegigi..i too believe in love at first sight

  • do you believe in love at first sight. yes i'm certain that it happens every time. ringo sang. does anyone believe in this. i do

  • what does that have to do with this vidio you may say. but i see how he is gazing in the womens eyes here. the people of olde seem to believe in this phenomenem a lot

  • i do....:-)

  • GREAT..a typical moodies song. It's a pity there's no live performance of this monumental song

  • I haven't read all of the comments, so perhaps someone has mentioned this. Rather than the supposed "Tolkien" connection, I believe this is -- quite simply -- an anti-war song.

  • this is why i love the moody blues so much. their music is so diverse and appealing it's not all rock and roll, or hard rock. their music is incredible and i love this song and the video. it certainly takes me away to another time and place. luv, musica

  • I think Justin has lived many past lives as this song reflects. He is an old soul. A great musical talent and song writer.

  • i CAN DEFINITELY PICTURE HIM IN THIS SCENARIO, A HANDSOME NOBLE GENTLEMAN. NOT MANY OF THEM LEFT TODAY GENTLEMEN THAT IS

  • I've thought the same thing about that. Justin is doing precisely what he charted for himself before coming into this life. If he went to a top hypno-therapist he could find out who he was in previous incarnations. We are eternal. love out.

  • Excellent. Also hadnt heard this track before. Liked the Tolkein theme too as it matches the incredible insight of the mmody's.....maybe you could do something similar to Dear Diary ???

  • what album was this from? Thought I had most but do not remember this.Lovely!!

  • The album was called --- Caught live plus 5.

I'm a big time Moodies fan, but this was a very poor effort, except for 2 songs. This song was one of those 2 songs.

  • julesmoody you were asking what album this song was from. Caughtlive+5

  • What can be done you won't believe,

    listen and you may see,

    everyone's dream is deep within,

find it and you'll be free!

~ Great lyrics, wonderful song, and the Moody's make it so!

  • beautiful!! I love the movie and the Moody Blues music blends perfectly.

  • Faramir is HOT and I love the song too

  • enchanting!

  • A wonderful song and stunning video from the "Prelude" era of the magnificent Moodies. This song along with King & Queen still send shivers up my spine and make me wish i could have been 10 years older in the mid/late 60s so i could have been part of the music buzz that was happening back then.

  • it wasn't a hit song because it wasn't released until 12 years after it was recorded, when Mike Pinder andTony Clarke had left, and the pop forgetable Moodies had taken its place. This along with KIng & Queen are two masterpieces that show how far the moodies have fallen from the late 60's when it was recorded. Apparently the songs didn't quite fit their theme albums.

  • I really think The Moody Blues should've done the score of "Lord of the Rings".

  • What am I doing here?

  • Im am stunned by your presentation. I was so touched many years ago, when I first heard this song. Being a long time Moodies fan, this was an odd one that truely stuck with me for all these years.

You have done a simply wonderful job of pinning the essense , with the emotion , with the memories of how I heard the song. I know you did not make this presentation for me, but it sure feels like it.

    Thank you.

  • You should do this professionally. Right match indeed. Thank you

  • I just love the haunting, ethereal sound of the mellotron on this song. This is the hard core early Moody Blues sound with Mike Pinder. This song inspired me to study and perform classical acting.

    Thank You,

    RickyNardi

    Thank you RickyNardi

  • U rock i've luvd the moody blues forever and i am almost obsessed with the Lord of the Rings especially Faramir this vid is the coolest

  • Thank you for this most sensitive vid that captures so much the essence, ethereal yet precise.

  • i've only heard this about 3 times on you tube and i absolutely love it!!! it is so beautifull!

  • OOps! I meant to say also to my eyes, what a lovely set of pics to go with the sound song , well done !

  • Magic to my ears

  • This should have been their first number one hit. A masterpiece of a song on every level, from the Moody Masters.

  • Outstanding job! Nice segue at the end. Nice tie-ins throughout. You should be proud of that one!

  • I'm another 60,s retread that got turned on to the Moodies and TLOTR way back when and having both stories and music both intertwine so impressively does this old hippy heart good. Thank you again for your vision and caring about the music of an earlier time , still relevent !!!

  • I was turned on to the Moody Blues and LOTR both at the same time, geez 40 years ago. Junior High. Long Beach, Ca. Excellant Video.

  • Nice balance !!!

  • Outstanding job!! You have great talent and have used 2 of my very favorite things: Moody Blues, (the best ever) and Tolkien's LOTR. I love the way you brought the symbolism to play with the ship and the Blue Jays album....You are a PRO!

  • God damn this song is just spectacular. How these guys are not in the R&R HOF is the all time travesty in music history.

  • salsa,

    You said it all!!!

  • Yes they should be .....is it possible that can change ?

  • This song just goes to show that these guys have masterpiece's that no one knows about.

  • This is a winner. Thanks, I love it! Added to Favorites and Playlist.

  • Wow...I left my home and country years ago, and my only regret was having left all my albums behind...I haven't heard that song in so long. Thank you so much for posting this, and the visuals are simply wonderful. Thank you.

  • Hi, thanks for doing this video. I first heard this song in 1980 when I bought their Album 'Live + 5'. Your interpretation is so close to my own mental imagery of the song...so medieval, so quaint, so tragic.

The song is beautiful and your video does it full justice in terms of evocative imagry.

Well done!! You should be in film.

  • Thank you! :-)

  • This song has a similar theme to 'King And Queen'. Both are excellent songs, and both are on the 'Prelude' CD.

  • A very beautiful song.

  • I need to go to my basement and dig out the album live plus 5! Need to rediscover these beautiful songs never to be forgotten!!!!! I am happy knowing there are many other people in the world that "get it" as in the magic of the magnificent moody blues. They bring joy to my life.

  • are some of the scenes showed extra material?

  • Moodygal51:

Fantastic video...just as I would imagine it..and my Justin singing one of the most hauntingly beautiful songs my heart has ever heard...

  • I know this one from the "Caught Live Plus Five" album. The best of the "plus five".

  • Amazing, seamless job. Songs fantastic too. Thanks for posting!

  • These guys gare so gorgeous— one reminds me of 'clapton — doesnt it

  • I think "Go Now"was the Moody Blues first Number one hit

  • I agree! Especially with the resurgence of all things historical/mythical; gonna seen Justin tomorrow at Cleveland venue! Woo-hoo! Wish he'd deliver this song.

  • I wish they had released some of these a lot earlier than they did.

  • This is either from the delux version of "To Our Children's Children's Children," or "Caught Live Plus Five"

  • VERY VERY VERY nice work!!!! Goes to my faves!!

  • Really excellent juxtaposition and sensibilities. Well Done!

  • This song can also be found on the album"Caught Live Plus Five"

  • Eowyn was the best of them.... only a mortal woman wirh no magic power, only her iron resolve.

  • This is becoming my favorite video! Excellent blend of theme, album, movie, lyrics....everything. You got talent!

  • Great vid, I really liked the LOTR images to go with Justin's lovely lyrics. This song can also be found on the album "Prelude" from 1987.

    Peace,

    Jim

  • This version of the song is from the SACD release of "In Search of the Lost Chord" :-)

  • These fit like hand and glove. LOTR favorite. David Wehman's eyes entrance. Just like Moody Songs. Excellent. Looked all morning for this. Thanks

  • Always wanted to do a cover of this song. Maybe I'll give it a crack after this vid. good stuff.

  • Awesome song, awesome imagery, the best!!

  • You have such talent JustinFan, love your work

  • well done! thanks!

  • I just saw this video for the first time! It is sure beautiful! Thank you JustinFan for putting this together! I shall watch it a over and over!

  • Awsome Talent Justinfan. Supervely executed and presented. Thanks... What else have you got?

  • Thank You Justinfan, Beautiful work.

  • Justin and LOTR- what more can one ask for?

  • Absolutely lovely. I am a brand new You Tube viewer and am hooked in just one session thanks to the Moodies clips. Gorgeous work.

  • justin fits in nicely with the Lord of the Rings and King Arthur probably because he is a reincarnated soul...from long ago..a wandering minstrel...lost in his music then and now...but finally appreciated now ..we've all been here before.

  • Thank you. I'll do that. :-)

  • Brilliant! What a breathtaking video! Thank you.

  • I like this song. I have never heard it before. I like the sound of his voice, instrumentation...melody...very cool justin.

  • Beautiful realization of the song's story. Lovely juxtaposition of the cinema with the Blue Jays' album cover. Great picture of Justin. Gorgeous video.

  • I haven't heard this song since the last time I played my Caught Live+5 album. My favorite (never released on any Moody Blues album) cut. Thanks.

  • JustinFan, I love the vid! The scenes from the lord of the rings REALLY work with this song. I am totally impressed!

  • excellent !!!!

  • another great one thank you!

  • BRAVO Justinfan! Excellent use of this song! It goes so well with the pics you used.
