this looks like it was recorded on a Yorx turntable. I still have mine and it's easy to plug in and play vinyl off of. Great reissue 45 of one of my favorites! thanks for posting.
I go to Wildwood all the time in the summer. The commercial for it has this song playing and I always thought the song was written just for the commercial haha.
I love Wildwood. My Nana used to listen to this song when she was a kid, but she never knew what Wildwood was. Eventually she went there with my Pap and it rained the whole time. She told me the first time she ever went down there it was horrible. Yet, they went back. If it were't for that I never would've gone there. I've been there every year I lived and my Mom went down when she was pregnant with me so every year plus one. But anyways, Wildwood is an absolutely wonderful place!
Who would think that sharing blithe nostalgia in a public forum would spawn such unwarranted ciritism?
The resort begat the song that serves as the outlet for the outpouring of admiration.
We're not iignoring the song ,but then again, reality check: this is not a Dylan or Lennon-McCartney composition. Nothing about it lends itself to profound analysis; it only has a light side.
By the way, the phrase "down the shore" is unique to we New Jerseyans, ours alone; listen for it in this song .
i love wildwood! its the most amazing place you could ever visit! There is so much to do! lovely beaches, huge pools, and not to mention that fantastic boardwalk which would probably be the highlight of your vacation! So close if you live on the east coast and a great family vacation! Wildwood is an amazing place that everyone should have the pleasure of spending lots of time there!
I can assure you that back in the early '60s when this record was released, as I commented earlier, only people in the immediate vicinity of Wildwood knew where (or what) it was. This is still an enjoyable song, but if you weren't in NJ or Philly, you had no personal association with it to be able to reminisce happily about your Wildwood experiences.
And that is the reason why, having never visited Huntington Beach, CA, I did not comment on `Surf City' by Jan and Dean.
If I did, I'd confine my views to the song itself or the great summer of '63 I recall.
I'd be interested, though, in reading what those `in the know' had to say.
That is not what I or perhaps someone else might infer, but thank you for your input; please note, I wasn't arguing, what with so many more urgent matters in the world at hand.
i love wildwood but i h8 that theyre tearing thingsd down for stupid condos, like that awesome tiki pancake house n golf course n i loved it soooo much. wildwood seemed so fun in the 60's accoring 2 wht ppl say n i wish i was around for it cuz it was apparently awesome!! u can never go there without the famous boardwalk fries :)
@hebneh C'mon, dude! I had no idea where Wildwood was, but it didn't matter! It has universal appeal about summer that everyone can identify with. LOL, U R funny... For me, this song was exciting because it seemed to be about summer vacation, and being off of school. And this song was out for real in the Spring.
LOL, Who cares? Which is the point of my comment. The song stands on its own. "Summer coming, a lot of fun!" How ridiculous these "boomers?" are sitting around here ignoring the good song and discussing "Jersey"... who cares about it. Those who live there, apparently. So what, big deal (not).
What with its exotic-themed motels and endless amusements, Wildwood, NJ just had to be the Las Vegas of the East even though I first visited it in '57 when I was too young to party at night!
Thank you Mr. Rydell for this anthem and all your fellow Philadelphians for your patronage at the Jersey Shore.
I love Wildwood though hearing some stories of its glory days when there wasn't a boring moment and plenty more to do now n much wilder then it is today makes me wish i were around back then for it, ah well maybe itll catch on again.
I loved Wildwood! You'd hear Doo Wop coming out of every club in the late 50's and early 60's. We'd go on the boardwalk and meet lots of boys. We'd watch my uncle practice with his band, The Dynatones. We'd go to dances at the Starlight Ballroom and ride all the wild rides on the Boardwalk. We'd go to the movies and the Diner and Woolworth's. We'd eat pizza, hot dogs, tastee freeze, soft pretzels, Italian water ice, etc. There was no limit to the fun to be had there!
I'm glad you had fun in the late 60's too. I think there should be all kinds of fun things for kids nowadays too. I think that's a big part of what's wrong with our culture today.
I was just thinking about the roller rinks! I should have put that in the list of fun activities. That's a shame they closed them. Do you have any idea why?
That's too bad! That's the kind of things we used to like to do when it rained. One year we went down there for a week, and it rained constantly the whole time. We still had an absolute ball every minute of that week!
Just went down with my family and close family friends this past weekend and stayed at the Monterey motel. Love that place, and will always make my way down.
RustysFangirlForever... I do the same thing, trek from CA to Wildwood every year to visit family and enjoy the town. It still has a special place in my heart.
Even when I move to California, I will always come back to New Jersey at least once a year to go to Wildwood. It'll always have a sentimental place in my heart. Great song too. I love it.

Wildwood holds a lot of memories for me.
I screwed the Rockettes there in 1963.
Twice in 1964.
And just this past Wednesday.

Meaningful to people from that part of the USA, but the rest of us wouldn't have a clue where (or what) Wildwood was.
