  • thats very good!

  • Is the Droid X or the Incredible workable for blind / vision impaired people yet? Do I have to buy a phone with a physical keyboard. Does the new technology/apps make these phones accessible? What's your advice? If not those ...how about the Droid 2?

  • not true i have an Eris and currently have 2.1 not 1.6

  • @jdoggd74 Was this an update through Verizon? The Eris was dropped from the lineup, anyway.

  • thank you so much for doing this i was looking for a screen reading ability for my droid as i am visually imapired and you're never going to believe it i was an idiot and assumed the screen reader was under text to speech

  • Why don't you upgrade your touch to 3.0? It's only $5, or you can just download the firmware from the net.

  • Since 99% of people won't ever touch the Accessibility features on the iPod, I can see where you're coming from. However, the accessibility options on the iPod are a hardware dependent feature, and cannot be had with a simple firmware update.

  • Thanks for this. But you can't type with your nails. It wants more pressure.

  • After researching it, I am going to wait for TalkBack to be more usable, and a more usable keyboard to pop up.

  • do u have bifocals or something?

  • I do, because without them, I can't see for didly squat.

  • Eris update is set for Dec-Jan. I have seen the official documents from verizon, All goodle products will be on 2.0

  • Dang. I just got an iPhone because I thought android was inaccessible. Does it have any kind of screen magnification feature? I'm glad that when it comes time for a new phone in a few years there will be several accessible options without having to shell out for a separate screen reader.

  • There is no magnifier that I can speak of, at least not a system wide one, and after having experienced the screen reader some, I have to say that it's not ready for full usability yet. Try this: You can make an appointment in the calednar, but you cannot view it.

  • The guys at Google have uploaded new videos to the Eye-Free-Android Channel.

Demonstrating TalkBack and other Android accessibility features.

The system won't let me post a link, so just do a search for it on YouTube (probably available at the top of this page).

  • Now is this on the Eyes Free Android channel? I'm subscribed to them, and have yet to see anything.

  • I'm also subscribed but only found them when I did a search. I'll PM you the link.

  • No offense, but i would take anything that a BBY rep said about upgrade options for a certain android phone with a grain of salt.

I mean, look at my magic, it's running a hero rom. :P even though that's still 1.5. But ports are a possability.

  • Even so, TalkBack has no touch screen support, and I'd rather be safe than sorry when it comes to ready-made accessibility.

  • That's good news, I'm looking forward to hearing more about Android 2.0 Talk Back.

Choice is always good and now the iPhone 3GS and third party accessibility applications have one more competitor.

  • Nice! I would advise you to NOT take the Best Buy people at the word (having worked for Geek Squad myself). Some of their reps are LESS than knowledgeable!

  • I've been told this, however, the Eris still lacks a physical keyboard (which at this time, TalkBack won't run without, so...yeah. LOL :)

  • No issue with that. I am awaiting delivery on my Droid as we speak.

  • Never listen to a Best Buy rep. Good people, but they simple dont know their stuff. The only thing holding back the Eris from 2.0 is HTC. They need to make sure Sense will run properly on its ui. Android 2.0 HAS been confirmed for a 2010 release on ALL Hero devices. This includes the Eris.

  • Even so, I'm still sticking to the DROID. If you remember, TalkBack is keyboard only, no touch screen support. Thus, the Eris won't run it. I see this as a bit of a plus really, because for people who can't see, touch screens can be a real pain in the ass.

  • That is great that now Verizon has there own device with a screen reader all though limited, but it's a start. If you get the Droid I'm expecting a Video from you man doing some demo. I'm still going to go check it out when I go pay my bill next week.

  • WHEN R U GETTING IT?

  • It's on my Christmas list. :)

  • i talk to my verizon rep. yesterday and he said the eris will be updated to 2.0 in early spring 2010

  • the eris will always be behind though. motorola has the rights to the latest version of android. so only the motorola droid will have the latest version

  • I back up what jfost784 said, and also, I don't think I could do without the physical keyboard. See the issue here is that Talk Back has NO touch screen support, so the Eris couldn't use it, anyway.

  • Thanks, great review, but, when you say 8/10 some people are genrous some people are harsh, please compare it to the iPod touch @nd Generation please so i know what its like!

  • Great review -- liked the desciption of the voice!
