  • This is by far the best interpretationof Ps. 42 I've ever heared. Especially this and Psalm 95 are really really great on that CD. Recommend buying it to everyone ;)

  • who cares if he was jewish or not? even if i dont belive in god i love this piece cause i dont care what they are singing even if i can understand it ,

    I just like the melody

  • @Masterpiece55555 Ap pity. Both: that you don't understand, but even more that you don't believe. However.

  • This is so absolutely Godly beautifull and you are arguiing about his religion and politics!!?? Please have a moment and think about what you are doing!

  • @orgelfanaat8

  • Mendelssohn was of Jewish heritage but Lutheran faith.

  • Mendelsohn was a Christian by birth. His mother was German, therefore even by Jewish tradition he was a Christian. But what difference does it make? nevertheless he must have had some Jewish spark in him. Just look how many compositions about biblical subjects did he compose...

  • @algiora

    You're a fool and dummy.

Mendelssohn's both parents Abraham and Leah where 100 percent Jews. Felix Mendelssohn was born a Jew, you idiot! get that through your head, and stop spreading lies.

  • @saulboyjt I see that you forgot all your Georgian manners, and what is left there is the Caucasian notorious temperament. Suppose that I made a mistake (which I didn't). WTF gives you the knowledge to judge if I am a fool? BTW, I have a Doctoral degree in engineering so I am a little foolish, but not a dummy... and your compositions are a faint imitation of the Lieder Ohne worte by F Mendelsohn. Wake up man, we are in the 21st century! Try to be original!

  • @oberstinky: That's what I said: his grandfather was a famous jewish philosopher, but since his perents converted before his birth, he was never jewish at all. He was given a christian name rather than a jewish one, just as his brothers and sisters. And it wasn't just out of opportunism, there was no need for that at that time. And his music is definetely christian, I don't have to list all his works.

  • Just watched the film ''Dresden'', about the totall senseless bombing of this beautiful city, packed with refugees .

  • @helmuthoorn Did the Germans then spare any city because of its culture and refugees? "you get what you pay for". how many Jews did they spare in WW2? the problem is that those who suffer the most because of war, are the ones who need it the least

  • @algiora

That is the problem and the tragedy of all wars indeed.

Apart from that the boys and men of the RAF and the USAF were told that the bombing of Dresden was vital to help the Russian advance and did bot know what they were actually doing.

They threw their bombs on a virtually defenceless city packed with women, children and elderly, who were on the run for the beast of war, which eventually gained upon them from the skies.

Many of them must have been praying and crying like Ps. 42.

  • @helmuthoorn The boys and men of the SS and the Einsatzgruppen did know very well what they were doing, when they were murdering defensless women, and children. Often with a terribly agony. I can't mourn too much about Dresden. My dad was in Auschwitz, and all my mother's family had been murdered in Lemberg. They didn't deserve it. This was not even war. This was a plain systematic massacre. Let's hope that none of it will ever be repeated... peace!

  • @oberstinky: You don't. And he didn't convert at all, since he never was jewish.

Wikipedia

  • Michel Corboz' Mendelssohn Ps 42 is the best interpretation of:

Wie der Hirsch schreit nach frischem Wasser,

    I've heard so far

  • The very best interpretation of Mendelssohn's Psalm 42 I 've heard so far

  • 42= answer to life

  • Well... Mendelssohn Bartholdy, the king of melodies.

  • B"SD.

When everything seems falling down and carrying You down as well, please come and listen this Psalm 42.

    Yochanan.

  • I think crhistians are Jewish aswell, we have the same god of Isaac and Jacob.

  • @Sailorstayfree No. JHWH is a revengeous, cruel being who likes terrorizing the people. The God of Christianity is a loving father who sacrificed his son to save people from damnation. Please read the Old and the New Testament to find this significant difference.

  • I love this piece of music. We sang it years ago with our school-choir, consisting of pupils, teachers and the principal. Before I left school, our principal suddenly died. We sang it in his memorial mass, because he liked it so much. The widow and his children sat in first row and when it came to the end of the piece, where the choir sings a capella, I couldn't get out a note of my throat because it was so moving. Psalm 42 will always be connected with the memory of my principal.

  • Mendelssohn found Christ thru the writings of Bach, whose music he brought forth having been sort of buries with Bach. His grandmother gave Felix Bach's St. Matthew Passion for his birthday, which was instrumental in his conversion. He also carried Luther's hymn book with him everywhere. As far as Jewish blood, I believe its the same color as mine. Its the heart, not the blood that is changed.

  • @DoninWhiting

Apparently you know nothing about Mendelssohn's forced conversion to Christianity.

Mendelssohn was dragged by his idiotic and stupid Father Abraham when he was 4 years old and was forced to convert to Christianity. A small little boy doesn’t know what is going on with him, at such a young age. Mendelssohn was forced to abandon his Great Religion, called Judaism, the Father of all other religions, just be because the German anti-Semitic scum didn’t want Jews in their culture.

  • @saulboyjt

Sure... I bet Mendelssohn protested heavily and quoted from the Torah.

Allas... he was sheckled, thrown on the floor and beaten. He HAD to renounce and shave off his beard.

Actually I think he was more worried about his toys at that age.

So drop the term "Forced" and get over it.

  • @sbrenn

Anytime when you are been made to disconnect from your religion, parents, and history, and heritage without you been given a chance to do something about it, or voice your opposition, that's called been 'forced'.

This is simple, too bad you cant grasp this simple fact.

  • @saulboyjt

A boy of 4 couldn't care less. That's my point. If not, then there's something seriously wrong with the kid.

  • @sbrenn

Every boy should be given the chance to belong to his faith and people.

    That's the entire point.

  • @saulboyjt

Well... He could of course go back to "his people" when he was older.

    But he didn't.

And there you have it. He was obviously not traumatized.

I think he either couldn't care less, or... more likely... he embraced the Christian faith and found "his people" there.

He's obviously touched by God (or what you want to call it) and it really doesn't matter is he's Jewish, Muslim, Christian, Purple or green.

Either way: his music is devine.

  • @sbrenn

Because he was brainwashed from a younger age to be someone else.

    What's so hard to understand?

Felix should have remained an Observant Jew, there was no justification whatsoever for his conversion, it was wrong by every account.

  • @saulboyjt

Whether he was brainwashed by protestant views or Jewish views... what's the difference? Unless you claim the Jewish faith to be the true faith. Then any discussion is pointless. Personally I believe that your religion is purely based on where you were born. If you were born in Kabul, you would be a devout Muslim right now.

    Go in peace.

  • @sbrenn

You're against any religion that's why youre not making any sense.

Think about it without your bias towards religion, and you will have to come to terms with the truth of what I told you.

  • @saulboyjt

Don't claim the truth my friend for all we can do is guess.

And please respect others for their views.

    Enjoy the music.

    Peace.

  • Astonishing music, extreme beauty.

Mendelssohn remains my favorite composer of all time.

A Great Jewish Composer Felix Mendelssohn, what a Genius!

  • @saulboyjt Mendelssohn wasn't Jewish! His grandfather was the famous Jewish Philosoph Moses Mendelssohn but his father decided to convert to protestantisand so Felix Mendelssohn was babtized Protestant!

  • @MorningStarZweckel

    Are you normal?

Of course Mendelssohn was Jewish, he was born to Jewish parents and therefore was ethinically Jewish, he had Jewish blood. And you should remember that some Jews back then converted not because they loved Christianity, but because the German Christians didnt let Jews into the arts and culture , therfore some Jews were compelled to convert. This was classic anti semitism on part of the German Christians.

  • @MorningStarZweckel but protestant or not you will never be leave your family routes!!

  • @mvwjo ...routes?

  • beeing jewish, or german, or whocares what, has nothing to do with beeing a great composer.. This skill is all thanks to the person mendelssohn not thanks to some religion or a country.. I know all you people want to somehow get some credit for stuff you have nothing to do with whatsoever. Wich is a retarded thing to want. Just like it would be retarded for me to want people to respect holland because Rembrandt was a great painter. The man made the art not his country nor his beliefs

  • @plasjepies It is important that Mendelssohn was christian and not jewish - otherwise he wouldn't have made so much spiritual music like this piece.

  • I was talking about well constructed musical compositions.. I never said anything about spirituality.. But still you cant say he wouldnt be able to make spiritual music if he was Jewish Even if he was an atheist you cant say he wouldnt be able.. Noone is able to be certain about that.. We can only speculate on things that never happened. Speculations dont count as facts. So dont tell me that you know what mendelssohn would or wouldnt do like its THE truth when its merely YOUR truth

  • Comment removed

  • @plasjepies: Since one is religious belief and the other one nationality, you can be both jewish and german...

  • @Nikioko Agh dude thats not what I meant. Come on man how can you pretend to be so smart but not get this?! Im saying that the person makes the music not the religion not the nationality not his political views. Its the person that makes the music. We all have beliefs and views. Having these is nothing special. Beeing able to expres them like Mendelssohn could is. Thats why he deserves the credit.

  • @MorningStarZweckel Mendelssohn was Jewish! The reason he took christianity is because he was not recognized by the high society as a Jew..The predjudice was very high at the time and therefore in order to be accepted into the High society, he tried to do what they wanted of him. BTW..a person can convert to any religion, but if one is born Jewish it's more then just shopping around for a religion. It's that person's DNA.

  • @SimonaPiano: No, he wasn't. His perants coverted to Christianity and he was baptised just after his birth. And being jewish or christian or muslim or atheist is of course a matter of belief and not a matter of ancestry. Though the Nazis claimed something different.

Besides: Mendelssohn*'s spiritual compositions are based on christian church music tradition, not on jewish music tradition.

  • @SimonaPiano: You are right if you say that the psalms are by David and therefore, like all from the Old Testament, jewish tradition. I never doubted that. I just said that Mendelssohn was christian and wrote christian music. Why should a jewish composer write oratorios about Paulus or Christ, anyway? Why should he write cantatas like "Jesu meine Freude" or "Christe du Lamm Gottes"? Why should he study Bach's music and revive the St. Matthew Passion?

  • @MorningStarZweckel was mendelssohn a christian it looks like it?

  • @ryab55

If Wikipedia is right, - you are wrong.

But you are right in: "But what difference does it make?"

But, for me as a christian it makes his wonderfull music even more touching.

  • @MorningStarZweckel you better know your facts lol!

  • @MorningStarZweckel Though he identified as a protestant, he also had no problem identifying as a jew. He was also notoriously reticent about expressing his exact views about religion.

  • @MorningStarZweckel

Mendelssohn was 100 percent jewish cause jewish law clearly states that if one has Jewish parents then one is Jewish, and that's clear. If you dont like this solid clear fact then thats your problem, but intelligent people accepts facts and dont try to hide them.

  • Perfekt !

The best Psalm cantata in the world makes you run the water down the face. Just the prelude is the best example of romantic music composition.

  • @Nikioko

" Allein schon die Einleitung ist das Paradebeispiel für Romantische Musikkomposition" naja...

  • Humamn being in these days is consoled in these texts and music. Formy opnion I adore Mendelssohn in all his works. Crysalla

  • AREA this Saturday! 1st chair at region and pre-area. Hoping to three-peat, lol. Good luck everybody doing Texas all-state.

  • 12th Chair :(. Sucks to see people you've beat all year beat you in the end, but hey, it's no one's fault but my own. Congrats to all-state musicians

  • Same thing happened to me. I made 1st chair region and pre-area, and the 2nd chair end up beating me, finishing 2nd as well, and me at 5th. I still made all-state men's though. :) Good luck to you next year!

  • @RobLobstuhh Either way, congratulations. I totally wish I made it. I got 13th in Area. :( I was the last to go for both my singing and sight-reading auditions so my nerves were like... "KAJTKSTJLKSTJ". The sight-reading wasn't hard but because I was so dang nerves, I made up some crazy 16th note rhythm chaos in my mind (I'm guessing it was my heart rate.) and it threw me off. :P

Congrats to EVERYONE who made it. You all deserved it. :)

  • GO ALTOS!!!! WE ROCK!!!!

  • @mel91592 hell ya

  • i are sing bass 2 :) too bad there isn't bass 2 on this :P

  • Tenor's uber alles. This song is awesome. I always dislike it when people label German as being an ugly language, it can be very beautiful, as it is here. Good luck to all those trying to make the various state choirs and whatnot

  • Yeah, ppl always tell me German's a military language or some such. I always tell'm that in Germany there's just as many couples making out on park benches as there is anywhere else. German is a beautiful language. Look how much beautiful stuff has been written in it, in both word and music. The entire world of western culture owes a huge debt of gratitude to Germany. Germany as it once was, that is.

  • @desertpete01 Did germany write this song?.. no Mendelssohn did. So in other words we dont owe Germany anything. And besides, beauty is as relative as relative gets. To you and me German sounds lovely but to others it can nd DOES sound like military language. Who are we to decide for others what they should like and dislike? Maybe we should just listen to the music, give the PERSON his props and than shut the f up! Since we are in no position to make demands.

  • Saprono 1's ROCK!!! :P

  • Spell it right.

  • well excuse me 4 not always looking @ what i type >:(
