To all Ian Curtis worshippers ripping apart Grace Jones' innovative take on this track, please remember that it was Martin Hannett's production that gave the JD version any real force. Were it not for Hannett's intervention, the band's full potential would never have been realised.
Doing a cover means NOT doing the song the same as the original; A Brilliant cover LIKE THIS ONE is interpreting of the song using the style of the artist who is presently singing it, while paying a compliment to the other artist by using their song to express a subject matter... therefore its not a competition as to who did it best!! Its about mutual respect for other creative people and interpretations!!! THIS IS A BRILLIANT COVER FACT!
I love all the different versions I've heard of this song. Indie, to reggae, to rock/pop. Hank & Cupcakes version is awesome. It's got a sweet base line
First of all, don't be music snobs. Nobody cares if you own every foreign-released copy of the Ceremony Ep.
Second, the likes of Echo & The Bunnymen, The Sound, and The Chameleons, are few of many post-punk bands that far exceed the musical talent of Joy Division. If the snob within you is unrelenting, I suggest you choose a more credible band to snoot about.
@aquestionofkelly - so I'm (1/2 tongue-in-cheek) firmly committed to the joy division mythos so what you suggest is blasphemy but...supposing it weren't the sound & the chameleons, both quite excellent - tho comparing to the latter to jd is a bit apples & oranges i.e. dream pop/proto-shoegaze ting vs. the whole jd/pil death disco vibe - but echo & the f**king bunnymen? really? for real? I wouldn't even put those bros up against post-new gold simple minds.
@ClintJCL only if Storm could have been a villain. She'd KICK ASS with that. Maybe Halle Berry could have played Good Weather instead as a counter... :)
first: i am a great joy division fan for several decades. at 1981, i bought my first jd-album - it was still - and guess what: i bought in the same year the single 'i've seen that face before' from grace jones. i remember 1983 or so, when paul young covered 'love will tear us apart' , a journalist asked new order, how they dislike that crappy version from young. they said - surprise for the journalist - that he should not judge paul young in that unfair way. they said, it is ok for them.
Yeah so right heru 1966. I was a Joy Division fan in 1979 and love Grace's interpretation of 'She's Lost Control'. Thirty years later we have various people creating the Joy Division myth. Let them get on with it, but there's still no evidence so far that the original remaining members of Joy Division, really have a problem with Grace covering this track.
This version and the other vision have their strong points. Love or hate it at least Grace Jones realized cover versions of songs need to be unique and not try to copy the original.
From 6:09 til 6:17 you better be scared. Put a smile on your face and dance with Grace. Shake up the place. It's a musical taste. It's rhythm, deep inside.
@hunchybunker Grace covered Iggy's "Night Clubbing." She also covered the Police's "Demolition Man," the Pretender's "Private Life," Roxy Music's "Love is the Drug", and Tom Petty's "Breakdown" (among others) ... oh yeah, and each of her versions are MF awesome.
wow im impressed, i was worried about grace jones doing a cover of she lost control :S, doesnt touch the original but great interpretation! lovin the reggae rhythms
Five stars! It's incredible to read some of the vitriolic, small-minded comments here. I wonder what the living members of Joy Division would make of it all? Anyone would think she's made it sound like 'I should Be So Lucky'! To me, it's a brilliant and personal rendition of a great song. Would people rather hear a 'tracing paper' tribute band do it note-for-note? And did it occur to some of the purists that it might have led some listeners to check out Joy Division's work?
@heru1966 No, it would not occur to some of the purists that it might have led some listeners to check out Joy Division's work; for them to look outside their little bubble would burst it and then theyd be out in the big wide world
obv none of us can speak for ian. but he was into dub, hung out in reggae clubs, and also was a big john lydon fan - who is probably the closest comparison I could make to the way she approaches the vocal (and without stepping on toes/biting) so atleast on paper, it seems like something he might have liked
@MattyStevensonBishop Hi Matty, cheers for your response. I wasn't aware that Ian was into reggae and dub, learnt something there. And he has Lydon's individuality, as does Grace. I prefer cover versions that take a song in another direction altogether and at the very least, I'm sure it's more interesting for the original writers to hear.
When I went out in the 80ies in the punk / new wave scene it always struck me how strongly those "alternative" people were thinking in boxes. He's punk, they are goth, they are too commercial. Nothing is wrong with a cover, this is how the Rolling Stones and many other bands from the 60 ies began their carreer, there is nothing wrong with a commercial song, as long it means something to someone or as long as there is an emotion or feel to it from the heart, it's ok.
By the way, in those days she also covered Iggy Pop, Roxy Music and others as well and you cannot say that she is just covering these songs blindly or karaoke style, does she ? No, she is giving it her own interpretation and feel. She is not some silly beauty queen or puppet, but she is a true performer.
She got interested in new wave and punksongs, she always had a specific and different style and in 1980 she was already a star. Which could not be said of Joy Division at that time, despite to what people think nowadays. And didn't the remaining members of Joy Division choose a more commercial road afterwards themselves ?
Give me 1 reason why Joy Division cannot be covered? They were very good, and their songs were brilliant, but they are not sacred ! I truely believe Grace Jones was doing great here. Besides, she already covered this song in 1980, when most people did not even know this song yet.
Hooky, who played bass on the orignal Joy Division recording , has been playing Grace Jones' version of 'She's Lost control' when he's been doing DJ sets. He's clearly more open minded then some of today's Joy Division fans who try to re-invent the band into something that they never were in the first place. Sadly we don't what Ian Curtis would have thought of Grace's version but he probably wouldn't have been so precious as some of the people who claim to be his fans 30 years later.
This is a really imaginative cover version of Joy Division's number. One of the few times that a cover version is a vast improvement on the original .
I agree, although it would be interesting to know how much input Grace had in the development/production, or if she just came in, sang it, then left it all to the producers. I know she is credited with writing a lot of her songs, but I wonder how involved she got.
