  • I love vestal so much that was one person i always wanted to meet but my father told me shes been dead for a while that was an upset

  • My Grandmother and the ladies of their church had these dos. Their religion doesn't believe in cutting hair. So it went up! She told us that some of the ladies cheated and wrapped their hair around Quaker Oats boxes! Hilarious! But All kidding aside, the spirit flowed in that church in a way I never saw since then.

  • Ms. Vestal had the ticket for "Church of God Hair"! No disrespect meant in any way. I love it!

  • He was GREAT, but that was some of the biggest hair I have ever seen

  • Do you think there has ever been anyone who looked happier when singing than Johnny Cook? I don't know which I enjoy more; his singing or the look on his face.

  • Well, PRAISE JESUS !!!

  • Such a powerful gospel song ~ They served our Lord Jesus Christ during their tenure here on Earth ~ "To God Be The Glory"

  • I think I just got converted.

  • I want to hear the whole first clip, where could i find it

  • i have always loved the happy goodmans, especially vestal! i'm 16, and they are my favorite Southern Gospel group! unlike most people my age, i love Southern Gospel music, and i am very passionate about it. and i love the Happy Goodmans. i know and i sing all their songs in my church as well as in other places. i have many videos on here of me singing their songs. i will never be as talented or as spirited as they were, but i love singing for the Lord. please feel free to check out my videos!

  • When you do not look at the video hard to tell which one is singing. I wonder how long Vestel's hair was here. I recall as a young lad disliking them-BUT she GREW on me. Now I miss her dearly. Wonder if when Jesus returns she will be shouting the opening proclamation!

  • thanks for this great vidoe .. I enjoy the video where johnny and vestal compete against each other .. but find this one to be as good if not better.. I grew up in Muhlenberg county and lived in Madisonville in the 70s ,, what was the name of their church on park ave

    thanks

    Jim

  • Father God, forgive these people who cut down your servants. They are blinded by their sin. Johnny was married with three sons. He died of kidney failure. He served a living God & did an awesome job of it!

  • WOW, WOW,& WOW!!!

  • just think of the heavenly choir with johnny cook, vestal, howard, rusty and sam singing with all the heavenly voices!!!!!!!!

  • I just loved Vestal's anointed voice. "come on Johnny" Oh, yes! My my I love this video. Thank you for posting

  • hahahaha "Sing Howard"!!!!!!! Funny but yet demanding!

  • I love it when she says, "Lord, that's high!"

  • God bless Johnny & Vestal ... I miss the solo clip of their sing-off.

  • HERE THEY AER AGAIN. THE HAPPY GOODMAN'S DOING WHAT THEY DO BEST SPREADING THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST..LOVE Johnny Cook!!

    Judy DavIdson

  • Praise God

  • Just learned of Johnny's death...does anyone know of any obituary?

  • @PVBJR

Johnny passed away on May 14, 2000 in Huntsville, Alabama. You may search the obit archives in the Huntsville Times and find an obit for him. He is buried in the Oakwood Cemetery in Milan, Gibson County, Tennessee.

  • This is a great song to two step to.

  • DID NOT HE DIE OF AIDS....MARRIED ? KIDS ?????

  • i usually don't like Southern Gospel tenors...but i tip my hat to any man floating a D5 without breaking into a sweat.

  • this is some good ole pentecost praising!

  • These folks sing great but I'm sorry I couldn't stop laughing at 1:19. Really, tho I'm glad that apparently Frankenstiein's bride got saved & got rid of that silly stripe down the front of her hair.

  • This is just great. What a flood of memories it brings. Thanks for sharing.

  • If I remember correctly, Little Troy Lumpkin could get up there to!

  • Let Me Say First Off Thank God For Happy Goodman And Vestal For The Way They Stood Their Grounds And Sang No Matter What People Thought Or Said May Their Legacey Go On Through The On Coming Years I Grew Up On This Great Group Of Singers. Through There Music God Convicted My Heart To Be Saved. And Now I Wouldn't Take Nothing For My Journey Now. AMEN

  • Johnny was younger and had a bit more vocal quality, but both of them were just great Christians and singers! We miss all of these wonderful people!!!

  • You DO realize that THIS was the hairstyle in those days.... Correct? You need to get your priorities straight.. These people are doing nothing but preach the gospel & you have to bring them down ? There is nothing like Vestal & the Happy Goodmans <3

  • This is one of my favorite video along with other ones of the same song

  • Hey, that's my culture you're talking about. We didn't even know what a

drag queen was in those days. Thank

    God.

  • Wow, this brings back memories of drag queens tipping their balls off on acid doing this number to the delight of the crowd.

    Memories...

  • This song was used at the Apollo Ball in Birmingham last year... 1500 or so guys dressed in tux's all enjoying the show...

  • Vestal got better the older she got.

  • Awesome song and excellent message. We can all enjoy this song.

  • pladahitz you are disrespectful. enuf said. what if that was ur mama singin. so rude.

  • Vestal thanks so much for keeping the Faith and showing the world how it's done! Of course it's for God' Glory. It's so nice to see Christains having such fun as they witness. You are missed as are all whom now are whom Love was in the Lord.

  • im going to start wearing my hair like vestals

  • According to Vestals book the hair was a wig. And when she decided to quit wearing it she was really criticized for it. So many thought that it was her real hair and she had committed a great sin when she "cut" it.

  • she also wore hairpieces blended in with her real hair it does always look good though

  • loool wheres pati labelle when you need a high note? lol

  • no if they where listening to this song they would of been to happy good men and women to drink the kool -aid

  • eww

  • does anyone know where i can get the first video in full length.. It is only 0:25 sec long. i would like to see the full one..

  • yes on the gaither homecoming series it is on there

  • Absolutely excellent, simply beautiful!

  • her voice only got richer as she got older!!! great early footage :)

  • I wonder what Vestal's hairpiece weighs.

  • That was all Vestals' hair. Amazing isn't it? How many hairpins did that take?

  • GOOD Mercy...I don't know which is higher; the Hair or the voice?! Wow...love it.

  • @EmpressMahalia the higher the hair, the closer to God ;-)

  • Could be that IT was just about Vestal's personal life and she didn't mention a lot of people that she had worked with or thought of as friends.I don't think it was because there was a problem with Johnny, They were friends . Bernising

  • They make it look so effortless....this is a treasure

  • keep the hits coming I love getting my copies I have taped almost all the great old numbers ...and this is just great yours download great and play so good on my dvd thank you .

  • WOW...she looks so young in this video. SO many great old songs especially with her doing songs with the Gaithers. Love to hear the group. God Bless Gaithers.

  • Vestal passed on in about two years righ around Christmas. She and Johnny were friends till the end, I guess they are all in Heaven today, maybe still singing. hope this helps you to know they are at peace. Berni sing

  • Johnny passed away the 14th of May in 2000 in Huntsville Ala. He had health problems for sometime and he died of kidney failure. He was buried in his home town in Milan, Tenn. We lost a Great man, good soul and the greatest Tenor when God took Johnny home.God bless his family and his son Kevin, Who is a dear friend, Berni sing

  • does anyone know if johnny cook passed away and if so how did he die. I tried an internet search and couldnt come up with anything

  • I just love Vestal and Johnny. I am so glad to see these clips on here. Whenever I am feeling down all I have to do is listen or watch Vestal. She was a blessing.

  • truely awesome

  • Johnny is one of the Greatest gospel tenors.

  • You are sure right about Johnny, You are a Tenor Too????, berni

  • Johnny is one of the GREATEST gospel tenor.

  • I would have loved to attend one of their concerts. It seems they sure had alot of fun and Vestal was always smileing and so real and down to earth. That big hair was too much! I bet she was a wonderful lady and would have loved to meet her.

  • If you think that hair is something, watch the clip on here of the two of them singing this song in 1974.

  • Vestal Goodman was one of the nicest, most honest and down-to-earth ladies who ever lived, someone who positively radiated the love of Christ everywhere she went, who lit up a room simply by walking in it. Not at ALL one of those stereotypical spoiled rich showbiz people who put on a pretty face on-stage, but are jerks as soon as the cameras are off. Vestal grew up poor in the tiny town of Fyffe, Alabama during the Great Depression, and she never lost touch with her roots.

  • I love to watch this. There was such a mutual admiration between the Goodman's and Johnny. He always glowed when he sang. God Bless all of them. I think they are singing in Heaven together. Berni

  • Love Vestal's hairdo! Johnny Cook is a awesome singer!

  • This is the GREATEST song from them.

  • Vestal all the way thanks.

  • Can you please post the whole version of the clip shown at the very beginning of this vid? You know, the one of Vestal doing this later in her career. THANKS!

  • That is the whole clip from the video.

  • Johnny has the day Vestal. but I still love you. Go Johnny

  • Watch this to get a glimpse of heaven.

  • I will always love vestal goodman and her family and hope to see more

she has a way of makeing me happy still today.

we all lost a wonderful woman and these years we see her singing is still great.

thank you for this hope theres more to come

  • always loved the Happy Goodmans and Johnny Cook. Thanks for sharing.

  • Im so sorry vestal, but johnny took the cake. There's nothing better than this ^.^

  • No reply from jsnzk as posted. berni

  • Fantastic this was just great and enjoyable to watch. Vestal's hair style was unbelievable but her voice incredible. She was a great person and helping George Jones what a blessing.

  • love that hair wow it got a little better theo.

  • Loved the Goodmans. Each was unique in their own way. Rusty, my singing and songwriting hero; Sam's humor; Howard's energy; Johnny's voice was a little more "pure," but Vestal was a tremendous singer as well. Miss all of them and the era they sang in too!!

  • Moondoggy22 was Johnny still singing thru the years before the cancer. Do you know who he might have been singing with or any other videos of him, thanks ,bernising

  • Sorry I do not have any information on his later years. If I can find any other videos I will certainly post them

  • Moondoggy

Can you verify something for me.

Just got hooked to Gospel Music this past May thru a friend.

Heard thru the grapevine that Johnny Cook gone home to his Savior back in 2002?

If so may he rest in peace - and what about Vestal Goodman?

Love the Looking for a City. Thank you.

    budwoodjr

  • Johnny left us in 2000 at the young age of 51 and Vestal was called home in December 2003

  • @moondoggy22

They went the City they were seeking. I'm headed there, too! ;-)

  • @budwoodjr type in your browser deadoralive then type in the name you want to check on

  • Love this, Heard them do it in Ft Worth years ago..fun fun.

  • I believe the vintage clip is from the Happy Goodman Family Hour. Based on the dress and Vestal's hairstyle, I believe this is circa 1976 ot 77...post Vestal heart problems.

  • I love it - "Lord, that's high . . ." and later, "Take it, choir boy." How I miss Vestal so much!
