on remembrance day in Canada, I used my moment of silence to remember the sacrifices of hundreds of men to carve out a country and to remember arguably one of Africa's greatest leaders
Ian Smith was a man the calibre of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, or Winston Churchill. He was a pragmatic and determined leader who wanted the best for all his countrymen, even if some of them failed to recognise the wisdom of his foresight. He was resolute about his actions when he took them, and equally resolute in retrospect, and considering the present state of things in Rhodesia ("Zimbabwe" is the fictitious figment of Marxist's imagination) all should agree that he was right.
At a time when my nation seems to be coming apart, when everything I thought we stood for is being corrupted and sold to the highest bidder, when every leader in sight seems to be just another tool of the exploiters, how desperately we need a leader like Ian D Smith.
Right, wrong, or in-between, Smithy unquestionably had courage, integrity, and character like no national leader since.
An incredible man, who was principled, determined, self-disciplined and ruthlessly honest.
