It looks like they're using a surgical electrocautery pen, and it doesn't smell quite like what you'd imagine it would either. I've done a few brandings on myself and others and at worst, it just smells sorta like pork crackling, which is just the skin burning. It's a dry smell, and it doesn't get to you or anything. You can definitely hear the skin burning off though.

Pthrt! That's not branding, that's non-surgical diathermy. Branding is with a big, bright orange, glowing hunk of steel, and you do it to yourself. Yeah it tickles a bit, looks, smells and sounds nasty, but once it's done you will know more about yourself than you had ever imagined you could. It's a journey, but remeber that there's no way home.

Kitts2009 : do you have any tattoos already ? in my opinion, you can't compare the pain of a tattoo to that of a branding. It's not the same "kind of pain" at all. But yeah, branding hurts a lot more...

It must depend on the part of the body you choose, I guess. But yeah, it's obvioulsy painful.

lol yea I have one tattoo, but its fairly small, about the size of a silver dollar so it probably wouldn't compare in any way... I actually ended up doing the brand I had in mind a few months ago on my back, and you were right the pain is far different than tattooing, kinda like a searing numbness... although the healing process was more painful in my opinion... might've been because the lines of the pattern were very wide, about as thick as a belt strap... but everyone's different I guess ^_^
