He had so many amazing songs that people haven't heard. I have b/c I have been an Elvis fan since I was 5. My fav's are the not so popular ones. His best years were from the 1968 special on. He recorded the best songs at the time no matter who sang it. Once he sang it, it became his. Larry Gatlin would say the same about "Bitter They Are, Harder They Fall". Talk about emotion! And "Bridge Over Troubled Water".....it's an Elvis song. Rest in peace, my King!
Listening to this sad song, makes me want to be dead. Why?
Maybe because if I were, I woudlnt have to deal with life anymore, and I woudnt have to live the hard life we go through every day. But I think it's haveing and end and closure when there nothing else to look forward to. Man, what a deal.
This is one of the most heartbreaking yet beautiful songs Elvis ever sang, he makes you feel his pain. I always shed a tear by the end the song. I can't believe that some of the hidden gems of Elvis 1969 album (From Memphis) are not played enough.
just love this song it's like thinking of him as he left for the last time but not in a long black limosine A beautiful white -----just can't say it. sorry it makes me cry Just love this song. and how he sings it JUDY
There is absolutly no one who could ever fill his shoes. . His was the Mark of a Man who GOD entrusted with a gift no other would ever match. There have been many who come close but the emotion is not the same the thrill is not the esame. He is and was and will always be. THE BEST. No one will ever follow him. No one will ever touch the hearts of the men and women the way he did. I will never ever forget him he was a man with a wonderous Soul and heart. I MISS YOU EL. Thanks Jackie LOVE Bobbie
Just think this song is about a funeral! I feel that only Elvis could make a song like this not depressing at all. It is just beautiful, especially the second half (as Elvis often kicks up the emotion in the second half! ;) One of my favorite Elvis songs! The master!!
Who on this earth can say "The Chauffeur" like that??? How about "I'll never, I'll never love another...oh my heart...all my dreams...there with you...." No one :) :) :)
Great singers put themselves in the song, through the listeners ears and eyes! This is a phenomenal performance from the greatest all-around singer-performer that ever lived!
elvis really shows off his powerfull voice on this song doesnt he?? man that guy could sing like no other ive ever heard. and what funny is its all god given talent to him not one singing lesson. i heard a rumor one time that he wasnt allowed to sing in the church choir is that true or just gossip?? thanks to anyone who can answer. because if they turned him down then that was a lfe long mistake on their end of recording him and selling the records of gospel.....................godbless
@39tommyboy well said man. I just listened to a BBC radio2 documentary this morning here in the UK and they said Elvis had a three and half octave range and could sing bass baratone. I understand this is almost unique among mortal souls.
As far as I'm concerned, no harm intended, but THERE ARE NO OTHER VERSIONS. Elvis wiped them off the face of the Earth, 'n and I think everybody knows that. If Elvis had to write every word, every note, chord, etc., for this session, he would have THE SAME SONG. It's his life, but more than that, he sings from some secret place inside himself, and is able to passionately, angrily damn his own life! It is one of the most powerful recordings in the history of recorded music.
I've heardby alot of artist, but none have the passion or power of the Elvis version. amazing production, you can really feel the pain and sorrow. Elvis u r missed.
Elvis sang this song first then had to abandon the session due to a cold..this is take 9. It's a shame this was one of the ones from the sessions he never sang live.
Written by Bobby George. Elvis recorded is January 13, 1969 at American Sound Studios; it was the first song he recorded there. It is available on From Elvis in Memphis, From Nashville to Memphis: The Essential 60s Masters, Suspicious Minds (1999), and The Memphis Record, which is where this version is from.
My #1 elvis song. Like every song on the "from Elvis in Memphis" album this song is very intense and different from his work before. I adore this album. Knowing that there are even better alternative versions of this song...It just showes the greatness of Elvis. Tnx for posting
This is such a very spectacular, passionate, emotional, powerful, overlooked and underrated song. It should be way, way, way better known than it actually is. Elvis put all of his heart, fire, intensity, passion and soul into this song. It's a true masterpiece for sure. It's one of Elvis' most greatest songs. There's no possible way that anyone could sing this song as well or better than Elvis did. This video was absolutely phenomenal in every way, 10 Stars as always Jackie.

Besides the Sun 50's era, Elvis' best era was 1968-1970 - I'd pay top dollar for a professional video of one of his 1969 Vegas shows.

I always find myself wishing the last part of this song was 20 seconds longer. Probably the most emotion Elvis ever poured onto a record.
