He lost control while in the water.....thats when he got sideways and couldn't recover. He was going down regardless. Either way, an unexpected get-off sucks.
I agree somewhat with deelee74; remember if you get weird at speed, simply get off the seat and up on the pegs and let the bike straighten itself out. Frame geometry and the gyroscopic effect of the wheels will do that. Usually!
some of you guys got it, others not so good. I was the camera guy following the yellow R1100. I was on a R1200GS rental bike. The R1100 rider saved the faux pas of throttling up after the water crossing. The reason he went down was the pavement edge was really sharp and the grass was covering the edge. He got close to the edge then the front wheel dropped over at the same moment he leaning back to the left. So he went down. Only a tail light broken. No significant scratches or dents.
When he applied the brake, he should have broguht his legs back up and put some pressure on the left peg. He seemed stable enough by then that he shouldn't have had to go down. Remember not to panic in these situations. Just hang on and ride it out.
Ah dude that sucks. I feel so sorry for him. That happened to me twice before. The first time it happened was on muck and I dropped it. Lucky no damage. I managed to learn from the first time the second time round though and recovered. Remember why you fell and what to do next time and you'll be ready for it.
Yeah - really bad luck I reckon. I think he had got the post water skid under control but, concentrating on that moment, drifted onto some gravel by the side of the road and came off. Unlucky!
prolly hit the gas as soon as he was out of the water right. a friend did that. fishtailed but got control. This guy prolly ran into that little ditch right as he was getting control. And just hopped off.
I just love the way he spread eagled himself briefly before getting up.A true monty python moment.Glad it all worked out and thanks for posting.

I am guessing that the R1100s did not have ABS.

It looks like he just gave up and let it fall.

But their is traction on the dry,how is he going to step out the back on dry pavement, and why would he have hit the throttle THAT hard?
jogga123 3 years ago
Why would he have crashed if he hit the throttle after the water,he hit the brakes while in the wet.
jogga123 3 years ago
because if he throttled aggressively the back would have stepped out due to diminished adhesion, hance the fishtaling that is evident
