  • 1:50 My mind just collapsed.

  • wow thats a very great lesson... going to help me a lot. thank you very much

  • @dermannderskann STFU!

  • Fucking hell. How did he make up the solos on Megadeth's Rust In Peace album?! "Follow the chord"? There are too many! T_T

  • @andresoacuna hes still following them, hes just doing it faster and more complicated, listen to a bebop guitar solo if you think that rust in peace has too many chords, those guys are playing at like 215 bpm with different chords on each bar, and theyre following them perfectly, its just about knowing how to do it

  • @HiImJerry8 I was joking -.- lol.

  • @HiImJerry8 he's just saying it's tough.lol

  • Bach rules everything around me B.R.E.A.M. get the money dolla dolla bills yall

  • is that nick bowcott interviewing?

  • That Kelly is a freaking BEAST! ;__; Totally want one...

  • he is a fucking genius.

  • @TheFigueroa007 His lead playing may not be top notch all the time nowadays because his arm never fully recovered 100% after the nerve damage.

  • is that jackson kelly k3

  • @entumecer naah...thats not ke3, thats actually ke1, his very own kelly signature model

  • 1:19

something that sounds really G.. hahaha

  • like nick menza said it in paranoid

    Fuck me running

    friedman is d man

  • aww what a great lesson! i can see what he means with being able to amagine your jammin to a chord progression and go with the chords!

  • what year was this cus i thought he stopped using jackson straight after his departure from megadeth.

  • @ 0:50 how the fuck did he do that?

  • Mary looks good for his age

  • @anival2sorto This video was filmed in 98'.

  • @LTDGuitars420 I still think he looks the same xD

  • @anival2sorto He looks way older now.

  • @LTDGuitars420 I quoted exactly from Marty Friedman in this video. I think you're the only one that doesn't understand

  • I don't recall replying to any of your comments, are schizophrenic?

  • I will sum up the most valuable statement for the people with short attention spans: "...THIS HAS GOTTA BE THE GOAL OF EVERY GUITAR PLAYER... IS TO BE ABLE TO SOLO MELODICALLY AGAINST A CHORD PROGRESSION THAT IS ONLY IN YOUR HEAD."

  • Comment removed

  • @mttjklnn lol he doesnt look anything like howard stern.lol funny you should say that tho. i just watched private parts.

  • sounds like steve vai at 2:14 haha(: marty RULEZ!!!!

  • I guess that Hotel California will be rewritten after this right????

Jesus, Marty just made the greatest solo ever ....er greater!

I ll be seeing this guy live in 2months time.....

  • hotel california has just got pwned byt marty..

  • even if you're outside of the root playin weird shit marty is still better than you

  • the beautiful Jackson Kelly.......... I WANT ONE!!!

  • bitchin!

  • He's a great teacher.

  • owner of the best solo ever made

  • @danijelpesic Which is --- let me guess: Tornado of Souls?? I agree!!

  • ah yes.. the theory of Realativity...Einestein

  • So you mean that if something sounds good and you dont know a single scale but a solos sounds good that you made it would be using a scale you just dont know show you should just learn scales to make a hell of alot easer

  • LOL! something that sounds really G :P

  • know what the sad thing about marty is?.....dave had to teach him to play rhythm...i think thats fuckin hysterical!!! XD

  • @UFCfanboy7898 you have NO idea what the fuk your talking about Marty was in cacophony & released a solo LP before them. Mybe Dave had to show him a couple

of things from previous LPs BUT get Real. stay away from MUSIC & go back to the Gay UFC

  • @MetalHeart8787 ill do what i want....and even when he was in cacophony, they were sittin around waiting for the solo...like all shrapnel guitarists, their all soloists... not rhythm players...and thats why you dont hear from alot of them today...

  • @UFCfanboy7898 yeah they mainly focus on solos But in order to play that you have to learn the simple stuff. either way there are some they are not good OR creative at Rhythm. But most are it depends on how the song / phrasing is. exp Steve Vai is awsome at Guitar BUT has not created many great riffs. But he sure as hell can easly play Rhythm. Yes i like Vai But alot of his songs, newer solo stuff sounds the same

  • @UFCfanboy7898 - Umm no he didn't.

  • @WERExALLxPHUCKED rofl yes he did, dosnt mean martys a bad player or anything, i just think its hysterical XD

  • this is for the dragon-fuckers faggots or both...

  • @aintnaive Dude, what the fuck are you talking about? This is for musicians!

  • comparing chords to bad neighbourhoods rofl

  • So if my chord progression is A minor and G major, then I could solo in C major? Then I can progress the solo in E minor?

  • @Outcrowddude Correct dude :)

  • @Outcrowddude Yes

  • @dirtydonki, lol

  • @dirtydonki wow your comment made me so wild that I just broke down laughing, couldnt let that much of anger grow inside me

  • @dirtydonki you're still a fag though :D

  • @asianaxeman Rather a fag than a fat ugly fuck and incompetent guitar play like you and your butt pal Marty.

  • @dirtydonki

    buhhh

  • LOL!!!! talking about bad neighborhoods at 6:00 in ties to music

  • oh no not a non-activated version fuck off!!! ur ruining martys performance...............wait thats impossible!!!!

  • lo when he says you could be doing something totally obnoxious at 5:10 it sounds like the intro to "the skull beneath the skin."

  • I stumbled across this site and see that most of the commenters don't understand the theory Marty and the interviewer are discussing. First, the root chords they are talking about is the D Major (I) and the G Major (IV). However, the "Solo" he is playing is the Relative Minor of the Major Chords. I. E. the relative minor of D Major is B minor and the relative minor of G Major is E minor. This applies to all notes: whatever the major (root) note is, the relative minor is 3 1/2 steps down.

  • whats the name of the site

  • Get that shit out of the way...

  • i didn't understand enything marty has explained. And i didn't understand any single word interviewer said -.-

  • lol 1:19

"something that sounds really G" :D

  • RIP Cacophony.

  • the only thing Marty needs is just a pick up and six strings to make beautiful music.

  • @fabianidhesona And an amp

  • 7:59 just crazy middle eastern type of thing.

  • Hammett doesn't suck he just likes one style of playing, (mainly one key). He is very good with the talent he has (Mustaine even admits this). Marty makes everyone look stupid though. Even Dimebag, Halen, Hendrix, Clapton, Satriani, Vai, Petrucci etc pale in comparison. They are all great, but Marty sounds better.

  • i think thats a bit relative to say the least

  • when was this?

  • April 15, 1998 lol

  • ahh lol thanks .... someone must've skipped the intro ;)

  • are u stupid?

  • It would have been hilarious if he said "You have to be rooted....in the root"

  • that is a fucking nice jackson

  • Marty is such and awesome guitar player.

  • usually everytime someone just guesses where the pattern is they still get part of a scale and maybe part of another one.. even if they dont finish it.. most people can tell if a notes off

  • So knowledgeable. The interviewer is in waay too deep, half the time he doesn't even get what Marty is saying. Great stuff.

  • Just on every site there´s a dickhead! "this is shit"..blabla.."I can make this better"..blabla! Go on and do something then, on stage, so we, the hole world will understand!! Marty is very humble and knows what to do! Just be thankful, please!

  • hail marty. were not worthy!!

  • Wacthing Marty plays tells me i have a long long way to go on guitar

  • ROFL!

  • I would fuck that guitar

  • me too man, jackson kelly my favourite guitar

  • this is awseome this helped me alot

  • Marty is a great guitar player.

  • Marty is best guitar metal and trash the best school jason becker fantastic guitar player

  • Ok quick question, can someone please tell me how to play in key and not sound bad....because like i can play lots of stuff but when it comes to talking about like Em scales or w/e im lost

  • well if ur soloing stayin in key is only using the scale for the appropriate riff to solo on

  • but how you you know what scale goes best with a riff ?

  • You can't play western music without using scales, and you can't play lead guitar without using scales. Wtf are you talking about.

  • You can play lead guitar without using scale's man it's all in what sound's good to your ear, dumbass.

  • Our entire music system is based on scales, if you are playing notes, they are derived from a scale. Being uneducated in music does not mean you are not using scales, dumbass.

  • as of what the other guy said... I go after what sounds good, but its all about the scales, u just dont think of it... but the knowledge in scales makes u know what will sound good.

  • @oregonskateok haha I like that totally make them feel stupid, then just add in a dumbass, harsh, but hilarious

  • @oregonskateok he's only saying, you have to use your ears more than memorizing scales, never said "there are no scale" dumbass.

  • @oregonskateok as true as your statement is, if that was directed at marty you need to bend over and go fuck yourself right now, seriously, put down the keyboard and bend over. The sound of Marty's shit hitting the toilet water is more musical than your entire career

  • fuck you

  • Why do they suck? Justify youre opinion and stop sounding like a 5 year old

  • Yeah right, fuck off asshole!

  • 12 year old wannabe troll is fail.

  • if your playing in the key of Em then use Em scale. practicing improvising is key to making yourselfe sound good to but obv you have to play in key :)

  • First step learn pentatonics/ the blues and also learn the major scale (Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian and Locrian), this may sound complex, but the ideas and shapes are simple, once you master the shapes soloing in key is like a walk in the park

  • yeah but that's only the beginning, since using those scales will make you sound like mostly everyone else xDD...phrasing also has a great importance in improvising (and soloing), and developing licks (or stealing them from other guys) helps too. Ear training and chord formation play major roles as well...

  • Thats why he said First step lol. No but you are 100% correct mate. Phrasing is what seperates the men from the boys.

  • @deadnightwarrior44 Play what sounds good to your ear. It doesn't necessarily have to be rigid, that's what Marty emphasizes, is to play something that sounds great in the song you're playing in.

Great way to do this, is cover one of your favorite songs, when it comes to the solos, just play something you've made up. The key to doing this, is sticking with the most accented chord in the song.

  • Marty Friedman Master of guitar Solo !!!

  • the hotel california thing he does at the end is amazing, you can actually hear the chords in his soloing

  • dam! new jackson kelly!

  • Marty, you're amazing ... i love you too !

  • 4:58 ... I hear strange laughter!

Anyway awesome lesson, really inspiring stuff =D Marty is the best guitarist ever for me.

  • Amazing solo at 7:50

  • actually, both of them are good guitarist...

  • yeah, but friedmen is better, he is way more articulate

  • I agree with you. They're both amazing gutairists. It's like comparing Van Halen with Page they have different styles

  • wow that solo over hotel california was amazing,

You could hear the song through his soloing

    Marty is a genius

  • Genious

  • Marty is a "Fucking Genius" I still can't believe he taught himself.

  • agreed. he's phenomenal.

  • uhhh, im prettty sure you're equipment makes you sound heavy and anyone can play fast. kirk has nothing on marty...

  • no shit -.-

  • he has nothing on mustaine in my opinion either. would you agree?

  • nah, man. it's like, if you took the same setup, and played somethin like blink 182 versus pantera, pantera just sounds a lot heavier.

  • kirk is the man. but not as technical as marty

  • I disagree, Kirk's wah out-of-key solos have nothing on the magic that Marty throws out.

  • I've noticed that Marty on his own isn't as cool as Marty in a band. When he has all his energy focused on a band or something else then he does really well and makes amazing music. Still, watching him on his own solo is still pretty amazing as his improv skills are fantastic. Never liked Kirk, there's no exploration in his solos, it's just extremely fast with wah, it gets old I reckon. Death Magnetic was probably the best example of that! :P

  • ya marty was a lot better in megadeth. i think it helped that he was working with a brilliant metal writer like dave. And i liked kirk, i thout he was a lot heavier an faster than marty, but just not the brilliant feel and unique sound.

  • he's not faster than marty at all just for the record.

  • i have no doubt marty can play fast, it's just that he doesn't always, is what i'm sayin.

  • oh okay.haha my bad. yeah he's alot more about playing complex melodic tastey licks than speed, but when he plays fast he leaves most guys in the dust. his work in Tornado of Souls is sheer brilliance.

  • haha exactly bro. and ya, tornado of souls is up in the pantheon of guit-box solos

  • i'm not as big on kirk as i am on marty, but out of key? he's a pretty great solo writer. just not as good as marty.

  • y do have bring that sucker's name on marty friedman's video

    Marty is a guitar/music god

kirk is a dumb kid making noise with a guitar

  • oops i missed "to" :)

  • oops i also missed a "you" i guess i'm pretty buzzed

haha meant to say "why do u have to"

  • lol maybe its also because your buzzed that you didn't realize that i didn't bring him up. someone else on here did, calm down.lol

  • You couldn't of put it better, thats exctly what kirk sounds like!

  • heh kirk hammets a joke compared to Marty and Dave

  • @Skullscrew94 Compared to Marty for sure but I don't think Dave. Dave might be a good song writer, but when it comes to making solos, we always hear the exact same pentatonic licks over and over again.

  • @Fendershred50 You hear the same pentatonic stuff from Kirk so what was your point? And the fact that Dave isn't supposed to be the one with the flashy skills in the band makes Kirk look even worse.

  • @Austin1Arse That is a good point I guess.

  • @Fendershred50 thats very untrue friend. listen to the solos in wake up dead, lucretia, holy wars/punishment due, sweating bullets, ashes in your mouth, even parts of hangar 18... he knows how to use exotic scales quite well, and even when dave uses the pentatonic scale he doesn't repeat himself that much. He uses different sharps and/or flats. Also uses the aeolian mode for pasing tones.

  • @codebabe he didnt play on wake up dead that was chris poland

  • @ImDieingToLive thats true i just listened to that song. however he did play lead on the conjuring and rattlehead and those have excellent leads.

  • @codebabe The fuck r u smoking? Marty came in after SFSGSW

  • @SevenisNine I dont recall ever mentioning that album in the first place. But I know Jeff Young played lead on that album.

  • @codebabe He NEVER played on Peace Sells and on KIMB. That was Poland. Get ur facts straight

  • Comment removed

  • @SevenisNine I said that DAVE played the leads on the conjuring, rattlehead and wake up dead. Not marty. YOU get your facts straight and figure out what the discussion was on before you accuse people of saying something they didn't.

  • @codebabe You're fucking stupid, he didn't play lead on the conjuring or rattlehead... both of those are chris.

  • @dyamiohshtcorriveau I said Dave played leads on those tracks I wasn't talking about Marty you moron. Read what i said back about a thousand comments ago. I'm a big Friedman fan. I know what albums he appeared on and which ones Poland did. Poland did KIMB through Peace Sells, Jeff Yound did SFSGSW then Marty came in on Rust in Peace.

  • @ImDieingToLive you know I was talking about Dave Mustaine right? Not Marty Freidman. I was saying that Dave played great leads on Wake Up Dead. Poland doesn't play much lead on that song.

  • @Skullscrew94 dave is not good, so

  • @sneakysobb no heee is 100 better than kirk wah wah hammet

  • @sneakysobb Thats actually very debatable, I've seen videos in the 80s of Mustaine soloing like a shredder, really fast and clean, at other times he was very sloppy. Nowadays, he is so sloppy that I would say he sucks, but used to practice lead a lot when Megadeth first started.

  • @TheFigueroa007 very very true. He used to be a frigging beast.

  • @TheFigueroa007 mustaine sloopy? best metal guitarist of all time hands down

  • @bballplaer4life33 Not even. He's not that great.

  • @clwnz777

    y he is.

  • @89ErwinR You must be retarded. Marty is better than him. Broderick is better than him. There are so many more. Just by looking at your channel, I can assure you, you haven't even heard the best. Here is a list of some guitarists that don't play shitty thrash metal: Ryan Knight, Paul Gilbert, James Malone, Michael Keene, Jason Becker, AJ Minette, Muhammed Suiçmez and I could go on...

  • @clwnz777

dude i know, Mustaine is great as a riffer / riff writer / front man of the thrash band. My two favorite gitarist of all time are Marty and Jason, so please dont blame me cuz i said that mustaine is great. Peace!

  • @clwnz777 Mustaine is better than Broderick any day!

  • @MrThrashKing Seriously? Just another little trash kid that knows nothing about music. Broderick can play other types of music instead of shitty trash. When will Mustaine be able to pick up a classical guitar and play a classic masterpiece? Never. When will he be able to do 8 finger tapped arpeggios? Never. When will he be able to explain each and every detail of what scale/mode he's playing? Never. Broderick has more talent in 1 finger than Mustaine has in his 2 hands. Friedman is a + too.

  • @clwnz777 Maybe, but just because he isn't experienced in scales/modes and different types of music doesn't mean he isn't a better thrash/lead guitarist than Broderick. His solo's sound better and he plays from the ear not the mind. Agree with you on Friedman, he's the best!

  • @MrThrashKing Well, I wasn't saying Broderick was a better thrash guitarist. He's just a better guitarist in general. Not saying Mustaine sucks, he's good.

  • @clwnz777 I much prefer Friedman (my favourite Guitarist of all time), and can totally appreciate Broderick's technical ability too, but Mustaine pioneered an entire music movement, and can write a better riff than either of the aforementioned. Give the guy some credit?

  • @bballplaer4life33 Even though i consider Dave Mustaine THE master in guitar. He can sometimes be sloppy...and has a very dirty technique. Fucking genious though.

  • @Skullscrew94 especially marty

  • @Skullscrew94 douche
