I asked about this issue not long ago because I didn't want to cause problems or get in trouble for covering a song....so I asked an artist who I respect what the deal was. I was told I could perform covers of any song I wanted as long as it was "live" but could not record it without permission from the artist or going thru the Harry Fox agency to get a license and paying mechanical royalty fees. that's why fb lets u upload home videos of "live" performances but not a video photo w/ mp3 etc.

Guys, it's NOT Prince who is taking the sound down. It's the evil corporation of Warner Brothers, who owns all of his material from the 80's. Warner Music Group, or WMG, are the ones responsible for taking down the audio of ANY videos containing music that they "own." You have to go through a process and dispute it if you want the audio to be put back up. There are tutorials on youtube about how to bypass WMG copyright. I've had to do it for a couple of mine. It does work, eventually.

labels own CR for sound recordings, not for the actual song. if someone wants to play a cover of a song then it's up to the original artist whether or not they're allowed. the label can only block the original sound recording because that's all they own. the artist owns the rights to the lyrics and music.
