  • People see these things in the canon and grudgingly accept them. People see these things in Thomas, or Philip, or the Gospel of Truth, and they deny them--even though they teach the same truth! There were evil 'Gnostics,' just as there were evil Christians, who subverted their religions. I say that we APPLY what we can learn from the mysteries in the canon to the rejected books and try them on this basis. We must examine the books alone and what they say. We must try the spirits.

  • What people tend to overlook is what is that there are a great many examples of gnostic-sounding teachings in the New Testament. The orthodoxy has tended to PLAY DOWN the empowering verses such as "The kingdom of God is within you," "Ye are gods," "In that day, we shall be like him, for we shall see Him as HE IS," "Ye shall do GREATER things than me..." "If your eye is undivided, your body shall be full of light," "Ye shall be called the Sons of God," etc.

  • When I included the Gospel of Thomas in Living Jesus, Living Legend, the sayings all fit into, and shed light on the greater context. I did not include any of the Gospel of Judas simply because Judas repented of his actions in the canonical gospels, but the entire premise of him only doing what Jesus asked him to should have caused him no remorse. He SHOULD have never thrown the money into the sanctuary or killed himself or have been demonized by the other apostles. It cannot be made to fit.

  • I guess the part I have to explain is the concept of an open canon. If you see the keys at work in an apocryphal book as you see in the canonical ones, then we may conclude that they have the same source. Secret James, for instance, has such a strong and pointed message as a result of these keys, that you really almost have to concede it. The Gospel of Truth continues the idea of the Aeons taking over the Church and the world, as stated in Secret James as do the Odes of Solomon....

  • Why all these titles and categories? I am a CHRISTIAN. I believe the HOLY BIBLE is the WORD OF GOD. I believe that 'gnosis' is simply analogous to the experience that ANY BELIEVING CHRISTIAN who prays to God, believes in God, and walks with God experiences--a peace which passes all understanding, the rest that comes when your heart is assured of God's union with the bridal chamber of your heart. Categories are divisive, and I suggest we get past this whole "God-as-a-Concept." God is a Spirit....
