Can somebody tell me where this performance came from? I'm assuming it's a radio performance or something. The thing is I have this exact performance on an MP3, and I have no idea where it came from, when it was recorded, etc. And I'm pretty meticulous about tagging my music with the date, and any other info. I don't even know where I got the MP3, I have lots of random STP stuff on my computer. I've always been a huge fan, saw them live twice back in the 90's.

I'm not sure why they(any grunge band) recorded with electric guitars and such, grunge always sounds better acoustic. STP, AiC, Pearl Jam, all their acoustic performances outshine their albums.

@StrangeChief I've heard some deep underground stuff and nothing really matches what grunge produced, it was truly innovative and inventive. I guess grunge's curse is what made it its blessing. The isolation and ignorance of the musical style allowed it to develop and become something truly unique.
Just listen to Some of Soundgarden's rifts and drumbeats and tell me if they're anything close to what the members of The Kooks can produce...they're just not. Good songwriting is hard to find.

I lean toward the latter for Scott because he is an untrained singer and also has distorted his voice for the grungy effect it gives off.
Also smoking could have harmed his ability to take deep breaths, it could be both, but I think over working his vocal chords sounds like it's done more damage to his voice.

The only way you can harm your vocal chords is by over using your voice, trying to sing higher than you're able, or singing without warming up.
None of that damages your vocal chords, the only effect it has is on your lung capacity.

@drizzit06 I'm not a trained vocalist personally (no money for that kind of training!) but I've had many professional vocal teachers (and other teachers in the music profession) tell me the same thing. It's considered a huge myth, the only reasons singers destroy their voice is because they don't know how to sing.
I think this is more the case with something like Scott W, as he's more of a musician. I think Pink smokes and her voice is just as great as it originally was.

Can somebody tell me where this performance came from? I'm assuming it's a radio performance or something. The thing is I have this exact performance on an MP3, and I have no idea where it came from, when it was recorded, etc. And I'm pretty meticulous about tagging my music with the date, and any other info. I don't even know where I got the MP3, I have lots of random STP stuff on my computer. I've always been a huge fan, saw them live twice back in the 90's.

I'm not sure why they(any grunge band) recorded with electric guitars and such, grunge always sounds better acoustic. STP, AiC, Pearl Jam, all their acoustic performances outshine their albums.

@StrangeChief I've heard some deep underground stuff and nothing really matches what grunge produced, it was truly innovative and inventive. I guess grunge's curse is what made it its blessing. The isolation and ignorance of the musical style allowed it to develop and become something truly unique.
Just listen to Some of Soundgarden's rifts and drumbeats and tell me if they're anything close to what the members of The Kooks can produce...they're just not. Good songwriting is hard to find.

@StrangeChief The only thing that could harm it is over work of the muscle, aka singing incorrectly or forcing your voice trying to belt.
I lean toward the latter for Scott because he is an untrained singer and also has distorted his voice for the grungy effect it gives off.
Also smoking could have harmed his ability to take deep breaths, it could be both, but I think over working his vocal chords sounds like it's done more damage to his voice.

Drugs should have no effect on his vocal chords, as I said it's a muscle. The only thing that's going to hurt that muscle is overuse.
Heroine does have an effect on your muscular system, but I'm going to learn more toward overuse and improper use of vocal chords. Most popular singers have no idea of how to train their voices, they yell, they belt.

Crack doesn't harm your vocal chords that is SUCH a myth. Singing incorrectly hurts them, does Scott warm up before he sings? Correctly? That's what fucks up your voice, it's a muscle and if you overuse your voice, it's like lifting to much weights or something so to speak.
The only thing would be cigarettes and the only thing they could do would be to take away your ability to take full deep breaths.

@Sshelly34213 What about the tar and crap that coats your throat and vocal chords caused by smoking? I used to smoke a lot and my singing voice is just now coming back years after quitting. You're absolutely right about warming up, but don't forget that coke, crack, tobacco smoke, etc. can all coat and damage the vocal cords.

@drizzit06 You don't sing with your throat, that's incorrect singing, you sing with your vocal chords. If you sing like that, then that is the harm of your vocal chords; incorrect singing. The only way you can harm your vocal chords is by over using your voice, trying to sing higher than you're able, or singing without warming up.
None of that damages your vocal chords, the only effect it has is on your lung capacity.

Your vocal cords are located above the wind pipe, anything you inhale into your lungs goes past them. Given what smoke does to your lungs imagine what it does to your vocal chords on the way in and out.

The only thing that builds up would be phlegm which may worsen the tone only because it gets in the way of the vibrations that come out of your larynx and mouth. not because the phlegm is actually touching the muscle..Also it harms lung capacity.

@drizzit06 I'm not a trained vocalist personally (no money for that kind of training!) but I've had many professional vocal teachers (and other teachers in the music profession) tell me the same thing. It's considered a huge myth, the only reasons singers destroy their voice is because they don't know how to sing.
I think this is more the case with something like Scott W, as he's more of a musician. I think Pink smokes and her voice is just as great as it originally was.

You may have a lot of phlegm build up because of what you drink and eat and perhaps tar from smoking, but it doesn't really have much of an effect on the vocal chords.
