The church, the countryside and the weather is typical of a day in 19th century England. This movie is a wonderful potrayal of Hardy's classic if somewhat haunting tale!
I love Hardy's writing. It's so sympathetic to nature and people and their dilemmas. and very evocative of atmosphere, place and time with wonderful descriptions. Most of his stories have tragic endings. At least this one has a happy ending. It's my favourite.
30 years ago this was literature for us in high school & our teacher bought the entire class tickets for a Sunday matinee. The haunting song of the soldier stayed on in my heart, I've never forgotten it. I sang this piece to my boys when they were little, they're all grown up they still it the most beautiful in the world! The tale of Fanny is especially sad, from being at the wrong church, to the destruction by the gargoyles. This film is so beautiful it makes you cry! Thanks for the video!
this is my most adorable scene from the movie - when Terence sits down on a bench, and look in his eyes is so desperate, and raindrops flow down from his hair and face... gorgeous!
" The storms of ruthless dispensation have struck my flowery garland numb..."
Folly followed hard on the heels of the solider. His inner peace seemed shattered to the point that he feared to love as he should, and that cost him everything. The storms of dispensation washed away his flowers from the grave as if mocking his futile effort to do the maid a nicety.
Best love story ever by Thomas Hardy....movie brilliant always felt so sorry for poor Gabriel ....who adored bathsheba ...

This is the grid reference for the beach that St Troy went to. It is called Durdle Door, Lulworth Cove, in England. It is beautiful there.

Gorgeous song & the way it is fitted into this scene is a work of art. Forlorn & haunting.
