I was lucky enough to get to see Maynard Ferguson twice, both at Gadsden State Community College in Gadsden, AL, when I was in high school. I'm a percussionist, but my dad was a band director so I was raised listening to all types of music. Maynard was definately a talented musician and I'm glad I was fortunate enough to have seen him live.

Back in the 70's I saw him for free at the Top of the Ponch in Detroit. The stage was only about two feet high. I was literally sitting at his feet in front of him and his microphone fell off the stand and in my lap. I handed it back to him and he winked at me. It was awesome!

He doesn't have any concern for playing the trumpet musically. He just snorts a shitload of coke and makes fart noises on stage. As a trumpet player myself, I would recommend listening to other trumpet players in order to emulate a good sound. This man does NOT have a good sound.

They weren't as bad as the one at 1:02, but they were still mess ups. At any rate, his sound is just awful. I would say every note Maynard has ever played has been a mistake. Check out 'vrije geluiden' on youtube, a dutch program a weekly show hosting a variety of music from classical to african roots music. Holland has a mixed system of privately and publicly funded channels.
