u guys stoping trolling this amazing video and look at Maynhard face expressions at 1:34 and afterall leave a decent comment instead of comparations which is noob.
but to increase the commentaries addons let me be sincere here;
ok i went to see Clifford b the first time i confess and all i could really pick up something spice from. Maybe my search was too poorly or i really dont know clifford at all, maybe.
But from 3 videos i saw there wasnt speed for me... too ortodoxal jazz...
@tpstrat14 actually, maynard ferguson played with clifford brown and kept up. He was extremely talented on many aspects of the instrument, including soloing.
@SAHBfan i gree. I've ALWAYS thought of the conductor as being totally worthless , standing up in front of the group, once the tempo has been established and the band has begun the song...
I was lucky enough to get to see Maynard Ferguson twice, both at Gadsden State Community College in Gadsden, AL, when I was in high school. I'm a percussionist, but my dad was a band director so I was raised listening to all types of music. Maynard was definately a talented musician and I'm glad I was fortunate enough to have seen him live.
Yeah, it's hard to hit all the right pitches when you're using the mouth piece he has (is he using a jet tone mouthpiece or something?). Still pretty catchy though. This is baby making music if I ever heard it.
Maynard was always very good in high pitch but I dont like his tone. Its too rough for me. Its too rough for my taste. Still, Maurice Andre is (and always will be) my personal favorite.
@sajdin1 Maurice Andre is working in a completetely different style of music, he plays classic, Ferguson was a jazz musician! Maurice Andre would never be able to play jazz like Ferguson and vice versa!
Back in the 70's I saw him for free at the Top of the Ponch in Detroit. The stage was only about two feet high. I was literally sitting at his feet in front of him and his microphone fell off the stand and in my lap. I handed it back to him and he winked at me. It was awesome!
@revoltingmexican yeah, it's kinda goofy. I clicked on it about 50 times. Reminds me of combining a fat Bill Chase with Chris Farley doing the motivational speaker character.
History will remember them. The greatest figures of a fresh and innovative musical genre that emerged in the 20th century. Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Bill Evans... and Maynard Ferguson playing the Star Trek theme out of tune and up an octave! Masterful!
when was this ? Who is the lead in the trumpet section? not only is he a bad ass because of the flute playing but also because he is the bari player. yeah doubles!
I'm not trying to pick here but did he make a mistake at 1:02? I saw Maynard live only once--a free show in a mall in Va. back in the 70's. My favorite brass player ever. Man what a gift.
yeah...he did crack a mid-range note....you notice right before he made the mistake, he opened his eyes, maybe he saw a cute girl in the audience and had a little brain fart, cause right after the little tone split he closes his eyes and plays awesome again!
Yeah, he definitely split that note....happens to all of us from time to time; it's actually kind of nice to know that the legends aren't immune to it either.
@tambourmn Yes. He also farted notes at 0:55, 1:09, 1:16, 1:17, and 1:30. The man can't play trumpet. He uses obnoxious volume and vibrato to TRY and hide this fact. Sorry, Maynard, but we can see through it!! Or wait, he's one of the most popular trumpet players ever... maybe we can't see through it. Well, I can!!!!
@tpstrat14 What I can see from where I sit is that you are a 100-percent, gold-plated, genuine douche bag. DId you even bother to check out the scores of other MF videos on YouTube that scream trumpet virtuosity? Of course not. Instead, you make your assinine judgements based on one, yes, sub-standard MF performance. People like you slay me. Did you not think an MF fan _ and there are millions of us, by the way _ would call you out on what you wrote.
@fernmann7 You say this is a "sub-standard" MF performance, but I've seen about 10 other live MF performances and they were exactly the same. He doesn't have any concern for playing the trumpet musically. He just snorts a shitload of coke and makes fart noises on stage. As a trumpet player myself, I would recommend listening to other trumpet players in order to emulate a good sound. This man does NOT have a good sound.
@tambourmn the didn't come out as easily as he expected, that's all! brass instruments are touchy. i'm a sax player myself but i can play some simple tunes on the trumpet, it's difficult
@tambourmn It is fitting that the highest rated comments are about his mistake at 1:02. However, he did mess up like 15 other notes. They weren't as bad as the one at 1:02, but they were still mess ups. At any rate, his sound is just awful. I would say every note Maynard has ever played has been a mistake. He just needs a better sound....
@tpstrat14 I'm a saxophonist, and I don't like Maynard's style too much, but I still acknowledge that he was great at what he did. He's definitely a legend.
@tpstrat14 HOW DARE YOU TALK ABOUT A LIVING, BREATHING GOD THAT WALKED THIS EARTH??!! IT WAS HIS CHEAP HOLTON TRUMPET'S FAULT. IT COULDN'T HANDLE THE SHEER AWESOMENESS THAT WAS MAYNARD'S BEAUTIFUL, CLEAR, SUBTLE TONE.
