  • Maynard!

  • I just can't stop watching this video! I love it!

  • ベースの動きが楽しい

  • that flute guy is badass.

  • @Szellerie only 1/2 as baddass as the bass player!

  • @buddadude99 he's a bass-ass! :D

  • kommt doch gut ;)

  • fade out the best? never thought you would.launch again! good improvisers here, good tempo.fine musicians!

  • Oh, no!!!! Do not fade out! I want to see it to the end!!

The play itself is the bomb!

  • bravooooo, thanks ,Maynard Ferguson for me the best

  • I Never thought I would say this but thank god r'n'b took over the music industry. Oh my lord.

  • Launch the Fruiton Torpedoes, Gay Sulu !

    Aye-Aye, mein Crapitan !!

  • Denis Diblasio is and always will be one of the finest musicians ever!

  • @tpastrat14 u, sir, are an idiot! y do u keep on putting on comments? if u dont like the song dont say anything! maynard ferguson is a legend and ur most certainly not! u dont that he made mistakes! he couldve meant to do that (doubtfully)! trumpet, especially trumpet screaming is an extremely difficult task! he strained his lips SOOOOOOO often, i cant imagine him NOT making a mistake u bastird! i bet u cant make a good sound on the trumpet u jealous piece de merde!

  • no way! same trumpeters as in birdland gonna fly now and conquistador (the mike douglas version).

  • yazz flute

  • u guys stoping trolling this amazing video and look at Maynhard face expressions at 1:34 and afterall leave a decent comment instead of comparations which is noob.

    but to increase the commentaries addons let me be sincere here;

ok i went to see Clifford b the first time i confess and all i could really pick up something spice from. Maybe my search was too poorly or i really dont know clifford at all, maybe.

But from 3 videos i saw there wasnt speed for me... too ortodoxal jazz...

  • Fracktastic!

  • this composition is so good.

  • jazz flute ftw? idk if we have those now?

  • @abhijit1998 lol we have them... man that was shallow you sure you know who maynard is?

  • @schilke237 Thats why i came to the video, cause of maynard, =P he inspiredme to play trumpet

  • @abhijit1998 listen to clifford brown or miles davis and get ACTUALLY inspired. Maynard is total SHIIIIT

  • @tpstrat14 actually, maynard ferguson played with clifford brown and kept up. He was extremely talented on many aspects of the instrument, including soloing.

  • @thavault Maynard doesn't hold a candle to any trumpet player that got a paycheck, let alone Clifford Brown

  • Who's drumming. It kinda looks like Peter Erskine, but it sounds a lot different than his interpretation.

  • I don't care, just some fun memories. I miss Maynard!

  • 熱い!!!

  • フルートのリフんとこ、なにこのかっこよさ!

  • 1:02 fucked uuuuuuuup

  • :D

  • mostly everybody has a beard

  • super !!!!!!!!

  • I find it really weird about men playing flutes D=

  • hoooooooh

  • Does anyone have Maynard's version of Maria from the Mike Douglas Show? That was superb!!

  • 2:05...Moar Cowbell!!!!!!

  • Great band - but It looks mightily uncool when he tries to conduct! :-o

If they needed him waving his arms about to keep them together - why don't they fall apart when he turns his back on them to play?

    :o)

  • @SAHBfan i gree. I've ALWAYS thought of the conductor as being totally worthless , standing up in front of the group, once the tempo has been established and the band has begun the song...

  • I was lucky enough to get to see Maynard Ferguson twice, both at Gadsden State Community College in Gadsden, AL, when I was in high school. I'm a percussionist, but my dad was a band director so I was raised listening to all types of music. Maynard was definately a talented musician and I'm glad I was fortunate enough to have seen him live.

  • @jplandreth what year was that, I was there for one of them

  • @tpstrat14 go **** yourself

  • so tem gente quenaum sabe soprar falaram !!!!!!!

  • @tpstrat14 youre a douchebag... this man has talent, and i dont understand how you can be so thick as to not see that...

when you can scream better than maynard ferguson, let me know

  • Its official...maynard is a bad ass

  • it's cool!

In Japan ,this music is known as Nippon Television's Quiz Tour Program called "Trans America Ultra Quiz" theme.

  • Anyone find that they enjoy everything EXCEPT Maynard's playing in every one of his videos?

  • @ :30 fat Andy Samberg

  • Yeah, it's hard to hit all the right pitches when you're using the mouth piece he has (is he using a jet tone mouthpiece or something?). Still pretty catchy though. This is baby making music if I ever heard it.

  • That's some killer yazz flute!

  • They need to use this in credits for the next Star Trek movie.

  • @ChuckNorrisBeatMeUp Oh. Hell. Yeah.

  • @ChuckNorrisBeatMeUp You have the world's best YouTube name. ***respectfully bows***

  • he's groovy.

  • some manly ass beards in this band..

  • @squintzzz : Playing good music has that effect on you.

  • You generally do make mistakes when you use a shallow mouth piece for high range.

  • YES PROFESSIONAL COWBELLIST

  • hey! i didn't know that andy samberg played trumpet for maynard ferguson!

  • There was no reason for the flute solo to start when it did. Four bars later would have been correct. This made no musical sense and it sounded bad.

  • Is that Peter Erskine?

  • the song is called under the rim of the starlight

  • Man is it just me, or does MF's band like downright Biblical? How many of us can say they have the Apostle Peter on flute?

  • wow!! this man who plays the Flute is Bob Militello, he is the best woodwind player..

  • Bravo

  • Maynard was always very good in high pitch but I dont like his tone. Its too rough for me. Its too rough for my taste. Still, Maurice Andre is (and always will be) my personal favorite.

  • 1:02 He isn´t on the peak of greatest trumpeters. Does anyone heard mistake like this from Maurice Andre. When he plays mistake you don´t hear it.

  • @sajdin1 Maurice Andre is working in a completetely different style of music, he plays classic, Ferguson was a jazz musician! Maurice Andre would never be able to play jazz like Ferguson and vice versa!

  • @ArminP1988 Listen to Maurice Andre Le Canari.

Yeah, Maurice CAN improvise better than Maynerd could.

  • lol go man flute go

  • @kingchick34 I know that flute man!

  • haha the keyboard dude @ 2:02

  • Back in the 70's I saw him for free at the Top of the Ponch in Detroit. The stage was only about two feet high. I was literally sitting at his feet in front of him and his microphone fell off the stand and in my lap. I handed it back to him and he winked at me. It was awesome!

  • Time to go fly my constitution-class starship...

  • かっけえ!

  • MOAR COW BELL!!!

  • i love the song and the trumpet but i gotta say my favorite part was the flute solo at the end...

  • This is absolutely sick. I love it!

  • 1:33

  • click 1:33 over and over. keep clicking it. Hilarious!

  • @revoltingmexican yeah, it's kinda goofy. I clicked on it about 50 times. Reminds me of combining a fat Bill Chase with Chris Farley doing the motivational speaker character.

  • he is a greasy old man heap!

  • Featuring Mr. Ron Burgundy on the yazz flut!

  • when your this good, you can miss a note or two.

I saw him in texas in the 70's, inspired me to play.

  • FUCK that synth is sexy

  • thats one sick flute solo

  • History will remember them. The greatest figures of a fresh and innovative musical genre that emerged in the 20th century. Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Bill Evans... and Maynard Ferguson playing the Star Trek theme out of tune and up an octave! Masterful!

  • @yodasbro Beautifully put!!! ;)

  • when was this ? Who is the lead in the trumpet section? not only is he a bad ass because of the flute playing but also because he is the bari player. yeah doubles!

  • @hondarideralex This was 1977 and that is Stan Mark on Lead trumpet, he was Maynard's lead player for a little less than 10 years.

  • totally saw dennis diblasio live

  • Ladies and gentlemen Lyle Alzado on flute.

  • Pleasing

  • I dunno, I think there's something sexy about a guy that can play the flute!

  • awsome really cool even though i dont like star trek but this song that he played was awsome

  • lmfao this is some funky ish :D

  • nice trumpet section

  • needs more cowbell...

  • Bob Militello on flute. Peter Erskine on drums.

  • flute sucks

  • @dudepower100 no, you do.

  • @dudepower100 all about the brass{trumpet} :D

  • Awesome! I love maynard and star trek. Only 2:21? Wish it was longer.

  • superbad!!

  • sounds like they hooked up an effect to the mic

  • けっこうミスってないか?

  • I'm not trying to pick here but did he make a mistake at 1:02? I saw Maynard live only once--a free show in a mall in Va. back in the 70's. My favorite brass player ever. Man what a gift.

  • i think he did, but his fashion was the biggest mistake

    zing.

  • I'd go gay for his clothes.

  • BAM!

  • @LedZep2324 An open shirt like that in the 70's ment you were the man. Chest hair was a plus.

  • It's a partial fumble--it's not exactly a mistake, but it occurs involuntarily even within the best professionals.

  • @tambourmn Yeah, he blew the note. His lip didn't go high enough fast enough. Meh. It happens to everyone.

  • @tambourmn he didn't mess up, he chipped a note, he accidentally played to low. Happens to all professional musicians all of the time.

  • @Lchsmb2009 I heard that, and was like, crap. You don't hear MF chip that much, but it was in the low register anyway.

  • @tambourmn just a cracked note.. no harm done

  • yeah...he did crack a mid-range note....you notice right before he made the mistake, he opened his eyes, maybe he saw a cute girl in the audience and had a little brain fart, cause right after the little tone split he closes his eyes and plays awesome again!

  • @tambourmn

Yeah, he definitely split that note....happens to all of us from time to time; it's actually kind of nice to know that the legends aren't immune to it either.

  • @tambourmn He's only human. But hey - goes to show you what human mind can accomplish!! :)

  • @tambourmn Mistake at 1:02? I think the whole thing is a mistake

  • @edmonddantes64 Why?

  • @tambourmn That was no mistake! That was Jazz!

  • @tambourmn Yes. He also farted notes at 0:55, 1:09, 1:16, 1:17, and 1:30. The man can't play trumpet. He uses obnoxious volume and vibrato to TRY and hide this fact. Sorry, Maynard, but we can see through it!! Or wait, he's one of the most popular trumpet players ever... maybe we can't see through it. Well, I can!!!!

  • @tpstrat14 What I can see from where I sit is that you are a 100-percent, gold-plated, genuine douche bag. DId you even bother to check out the scores of other MF videos on YouTube that scream trumpet virtuosity? Of course not. Instead, you make your assinine judgements based on one, yes, sub-standard MF performance. People like you slay me. Did you not think an MF fan _ and there are millions of us, by the way _ would call you out on what you wrote.

  • @fernmann7 You say this is a "sub-standard" MF performance, but I've seen about 10 other live MF performances and they were exactly the same. He doesn't have any concern for playing the trumpet musically. He just snorts a shitload of coke and makes fart noises on stage. As a trumpet player myself, I would recommend listening to other trumpet players in order to emulate a good sound. This man does NOT have a good sound.

  • @tambourmn the didn't come out as easily as he expected, that's all! brass instruments are touchy. i'm a sax player myself but i can play some simple tunes on the trumpet, it's difficult

  • @tambourmn It is fitting that the highest rated comments are about his mistake at 1:02. However, he did mess up like 15 other notes. They weren't as bad as the one at 1:02, but they were still mess ups. At any rate, his sound is just awful. I would say every note Maynard has ever played has been a mistake. He just needs a better sound....

  • @tpstrat14 Too late for a better sound, he's dead.

  • @Jordanx67

even dead, he sounds better than the shyt on your page. back to the books, teacher

  • @tpstrat14 I'm a saxophonist, and I don't like Maynard's style too much, but I still acknowledge that he was great at what he did. He's definitely a legend.

  • @tpstrat14 HOW DARE YOU TALK ABOUT A LIVING, BREATHING GOD THAT WALKED THIS EARTH??!! IT WAS HIS CHEAP HOLTON TRUMPET'S FAULT. IT COULDN'T HANDLE THE SHEER AWESOMENESS THAT WAS MAYNARD'S BEAUTIFUL, CLEAR, SUBTLE TONE.

HE STOPPED MAKING MISTAKES WHEN HE SWITCHED TO MONETTE HORNS - BECAUSE WE ALL KNOW THEY ARE THE END ALL AND BE ALL OF TRUMPET DESIGN.

YOUR PENANCE: LISTEN TO 42.3 HOURS OF MAYNARD'S EUPHONIUM PLAYING, THEN HAVE SEX WITH A JET TONE MOUTHPIECE.

  • @tambourmn al mejor cazador...

  • @tambourmn The mistake was letting the flute solo.

  • @tambourmn i think its one of those mistakes that makes it sound much cooler XD

  • @tambourmn No that cracked note was written...you're an idiot.

  • @tambourmn he did crack! BUT EVEN THE BEST OF THEM FALTER AT TIMES!!!

  • @tambourmn a simple crack, but the key thing is that it didnt screw the whole thing up, he kept rocki.. well, jazzing along.

  • @tambourmn ..sometimes the notes dont come out right and it sounds like a mistake.

  • @tambourmn When it comes to jazz, there is no such thing as a mistake. ;-)

  • @generalbullmoose yeah, there sure are mistakes...

  • Check out the horn section at around 1:34 - 1:42 hunkering down into that high E flat then converting into the high F! Simply the best horn section he's ever had!

  • Sounds like Maynard's mouthpiece mustve been freakin' tiny!!

  • ニューヨークへ行きたいか~!!

  • don't know why people are thumbing down schulzy, its the truth, I would have to agree.

  • Who was the original artist? I want to look it up but you can imagine what comes up when i search anything with star trek in it

  • @DarthClam The song was written by Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry and Alex Courage specifically for the show. Don't know if anybody was an original performer of it.

  • えー!? 最後まで聞きたかったのに・・・

  • not going to lie i love the jazz flute

  • Screech is playing a flute!

  • split dem notes man .. terrible performance

  • i, personally, can't stop click on the play bottom again and again.

  • you gonna hit em?

  • hes playing in d sharp . a tricky key for trumpet. j chataway away away away

  • Trek got soul!

  • What a comment! "Trek got soul"...I'll never hear this song by Maynard the same way after reading that. LOL!

  • Holton is best !!

    Why he switched to Monette?

  • P.S NaqueH is Klingon for Hello

  • NaqueH!! Does anyone have the sheet music for this!!!! Please

  • Electro Latin Fusion is more suffice for this genre. I believe it's a west coast term.

  • i really just don't like jazz flutes. I don't feel it. Idk. I don't think it fits in.

  • Well you can shove my jazz flute right up your ... :) :) :)

    NEED MORE COWBELL

    loloololololol

  • Have you seen anchorman or are you being sarcastic?

  • Even the way DiBlasio plays it?

  • i think it fits best in bossa nova type stuff, but not this.

  • The funky bit at the end is really cool!

  • all the guys look the same except maynard lol

  • i can't stop listen to this piece!!!

it's sad that it ends directly in the middle

  • I love to transcribe music

  • is k abdul jabar on lead trumpet??

  • Seeing as how Kareem is black and the lead player is white, I'd say no.

Kareem is on the end playing the 4th part hahaha.

  • lol thats what i thought

  • No, its Roger Murdoch, the copilot.

  • What's are vector, Victor?

  • where would you see this ANYWHERE on daytime television today, which just speaks to how much TV royally sucks now.

  • French tv (TV5) has some nice programs hosting live music.

Check out 'vrije geluiden' on youtube, a dutch program a weekly show hosting a variety of music from classical to african roots music. Holland has a mixed system of privately and publicly funded channels.

It's true that only the publicly funded ones offer this kind of television.

  • BEAM ME UP MAYNARD!! YEAH!!

  • maynard ferguson!

    genuis! :D

    i love him!

    i'm playing the trumpet, too.

but not half as good as he does!

    and he's canadian!

    i love canada so much!

  • Canadians steal everything from the Americans.

  • the beatboxing floutist...super great...one of my favorite pieces...
