Thanks for the video. My loved xbox has not done this yet but when it does i will know how to fix. I only have one problem with one of your instruction about how to tighten down the screws. you never tighten down something in a circle sequence, for a "box" style sequence you always tighten each screw using a cross pattern. this will make sure that you tighten the unit down evenly and be sure to tighten all screws down to the same torque. car's tire is done using the star pattern. :)
@TDOG871 i got it just put Q-tips in the fan and let it over heat you should get three rings if you get 2 rings right away clean and apply more threaml paste again
@ThaEvilBoy yeah but my dvd drive doesnt open or make noise, the faan stays on for a couple of seconds, and it doesnt heat up. i left it on for a hour and it is cold and still has 3 red rings.
This worked for me. But no after about 3 minutes my console freezes, but I don't think it was me following the video, think it was like the heatsink falling out a couple times when trying to screw it back on. Oh well.
@hassanm90 Hey, I just fix my xbox 360 with those vid, now i dont have the rrod, but when i play a game, it will freez in 2 min. And now i still have rrod. any suggestion?
i did this fix, and it works excellent havent had any problems but it only been 2 weeks, i didnt see this video until today, but was wondering how long does this fix actually works for, or is it permanant
@fontane143 This is designed to be permenant. Although if you didnt do it correctley or if something else is wrong with your Xbox it most likely will RROD again. So this is meant to be a permanent fix as long as you do it correctly or there are no other problems.
I used about half of the thermal paste in the video!!! I saw that the original amount seemed like it smeared too much. And I cleaned it very well! Made sure that there was no residue linking any of the little soldered parts next to the processors on the dies (or dyes).
Well it worked!!!!!! However it does continuously freeze after random time frames. So I can only get a limited amount of play in before having to restart the console. Any way to fix this?
@equinox67 Yeah unfortunetally the x-clamp fix isn't really a "permanent" fix. I usually play with my xbox open and place the disc drive over the hard drive, using a book to hold it up. Then I put a computer fan right over the gpu. It's not pretty but it works.
Did this fix, it worked for a brief amount of time (20 minutes) . Right back to over heating in less than a minute. I think if you cooked it to much when the ring problem starts, theres just no going back. CPU/GPU dmg.
@ggoodan the reason you get RROD is because the gpu/cpu literally get so hot that the solder melts and breaks the connection, overheating it will (hopefully) remelt the solder into a working connection again. And since you have the clamp fix in place, it (hopefully) won't overheat to the point that the solder melts again.
I followed this guide about 2 years ago and have never done it any other way since, Repair kit cost me 4 quid off ebay and i have repaired 3 Xbox 360's now. Thank you very much for posting this tutorial. I have seen many on here since with them not baking the gpu properly and also powering it up without the drive plugged in .... Loosers!
I did the whole repair based on the 3 part video. My xbox will turn on and run for about 5 minutes and then freeze up...Doesn't really seem to RROD anymore, just freezing...any ideas on why?? I even layed a box fan on top and still freezing..All that work for nothing!
When you lay the fans on top of the DVD drive, shouldn't they not be facing down with the labels on top? That way the they will blow cool air down into the heatsinks.
I keep getting 1 rrod after five days i dont know what the problem.is :-( btw is it possible.to apply too much thermal.paste.which could cause a problem?
@Waqarmannan yes, silver based compounds can have adverse effects when in contact with electrical components ,not to mention the thermal compounds efficiency is greatly reduced when too much is applied.
I followed the video and fixed the RROD problem BUT When I turn on the Xbox 360, the fan starts up normal and it starts to get louder and louder and also spins faster and faster. than the xbox 360 turns off in 2-3 min ????? whay ???
So what's the alternative? Pay to have it fixed my microsoft so it will break again. I've had my same xbox fixed my m$ 6 times and now it's out of warranty.
The "X-Clamp Fix" may seem tempting but it may PERMANENTLY BREAK your console over a certain amount of time! Why? Because the X-Clamp fix puts too much pressure on the GPU and when the console heats up it will cause the solder balls under the GPU to merge and permanently break your console!!!
if your fan does not start, you may have tightened the screws too much, causing the mobo to bend. That's what I did. Loosening the screws got them working again, but of course you don't want to make them too loose. The guide I read said you can't make them too tight, but that turned out not to be true. The washers I was using may have been too thin though. I don't know. I'm just telling what worked for me.
This tutorial has worked for me in the past but I'm experiencing issues with another machine. I was given a xbox 360 2007 build with the HDMI slot. I Cleaned the CPU and GPU with isopropyl alcohol and reapplied a thin layer of arctic cooling MX-4 on all chips. Installed the X-clamps as done previously and no success.
I did notice my GPU heat sink never gets hot. I'm assuming this is the cause of the 3 rings. The solder joints are either loose or need reheating. How do I fix this?

@MrLlewlits From building computers I can tell you that when putting the paste on usually all you need to do is put a bit in the center and the heatsink will spread it out as it is secured. However from this video it looked like he used a lot so it will definitely spread asymmetrically. That being said I can't argue with the results of the 360 working.

hmm you must use a heat gun to reflow.. to get a real good x-clamp fix not just a fan overheat and lite silver paste its not the good way to fix a rrod sorry
Every time I do this i get it to work but when i turn it off then back on again it shows rrod... I have to wait for it to cool down every time. Can anyone help me!?!?!?!?
I just bought a kit on ebay with 'stars' thermal paste, is this considered to be a good thermal paste? Otherwise i might go out to buy some better paste before i start the repair!
I fixed my son Xbox like this, but I spread the thermal compound thin and even on the gpu and cpu. The reason why the error occurred in the first place was because who ever built the unit used to much paste and it eventually created a heat block between the heat sink and chip for the heat to transfer and dissipate heat in the heat sinks. some people believe it is the solder joints and use a heat gun and destroy their board and components .Surface mount chips are almost always permanent bonds.
To anyone watching this video; The X-clamp fix is and always was a scam! Perpetrated to sale you useless bolts that will in the end kill your Xbox 360! Do not do it at all! All you will succeed in doing is killing your Xbox! I will show you proof! On my channel come look and if you still want to kill your Xbox? At least you will know the truth! First.
I watch the video and did the same process as you did. After I put it back together I still have three red rings. I noticed that power supply light starts green and then goes back to orange with 2 seconds. I even notice the fan come on and shut off. Before I broke my xbox apart this wasn’t a problem. I tried another power supply to see the results. It same results as mine. Do you have any suggests? What is the reason to heat the circuit board?
@sourabmahi11the screws that you tighten back are not balanced meaning to tight or to soft or both all over the place, you gotta remember where you start the spin and end, use the first one and then do the same with all the other 7 in the criss cross patern.
i also did this trick and it has worked for about a year now...but now when i turn it on it will freeze 30 seconds in...i turn it off then it will have 3 red rings. what should i do...anybody????? i want to play halo so bad >:(
Hey so I commented a week ago or so saying it worked fine but already my xbox has started freezing again. No RRoD, but I can't play games for more than 5 minutes. Any suggestions?
Oops! I figured it out pretty quickly haha. I had forgotten to put the washers on the screws for the CPU somehow. In any case, the xbox appears to be working now although I havn't yet completely reassembled it and tried to play a game. Thanks for the advice on a quick fix and thanks for saving me $100 :D
I did all this and when I got to the overheating stage, the 3 RROD turned into 2 RROD after only about 2 minutes. I turned off the xbox for about an hour (I unplugged all cables too) to let it cool down. When I turned it back on, it appears to work for about a second or two because the green lights start flashing in each quadrant, but within a few seconds 2RROD appear. Anyone know what I did wrong? Could the thermal paste not have fully melted because the overheating time was so short? Help plz!
That won't repair it, the fix is only temporary, as the solder pads under the GPU/CPU crack overtime due to cheap themal paste they use from the factory. causing the board to flex and lead-free solder. The only true way to fix it is to use a wave solder station and remove the GPU and CPU, and to reball the GPU/CPU with a Stencil Template. I charge people $79 to do this with 1 year warranty. This kit in the video will only warped the board more, for maybe a 1-3 months before it break again!!
@RetroPCDOS i used this to repair my friends xbox. It was having problems displaying the video, but there was no rrod (error 74 or some such). After following all the steps and finally getting it reassembled, It seemed to work perfectly fine. Fully functional. However, 2-3 weeks later it broke down again w/ the same problem. If you think ur xbox might be under warranty DO NOT TRY THIS. if you are sure that the warranty is expired and you've got nothing to lose, its certainly worth a shot.
@RetroPCDOS Hello sir. Would you be willing to teach me? I work on game systems to build experience in electronics and i believe you could help me further my education.
@ICRMX what I did was screw: nylon > motherboard > nylon > metal > heat sink. This order seemed to work for me. Also, I am having the same problem as you concerning screwing the small black screws back into the exterior of the chassis. The xbox's screws don't seem to fit into the backs of the screws provided by the repair kit. I think I may try to reassemble the xbox without putting these screws back in. The chassis should still be relatively secured by the other screws.
ok so i just posted that it didnt work but i let it set there for like 10 minutes with the red lights blinking, got frustrated turned it off, it was laying down on the table, i smacked it and turned it back on and it worked, not even kidding, just kinda slapped the top of it and it worked. im totally serious.
I tried this and it still didn't work. I bought this xbox with the red rings intending to fix it and use it. I opened it to find it had already had the xclamp fix done to it and the 12 V fan mod also. I did everything on this video with no luck! Any suggestions?
@synteker19 dude same here. ive watched all the videos on how to fix it, finally decided this guys seems to know whats going on so i followed his, and found that it had been done, and i still have the ring
I'm not trying to replace the clamps but I did take it apart and now I get the 2 red lights when I turn it on. Can someone help me with this or is my xbox done?
My REBORN Xbox just ran for an hour or so. SUPERB !
I used a felt pen to mark the aluminium case with an "L" and a "S" depending on the size of the bolt I was removing. I could'nt get .5"x3/16" screws in N Alberta, so I trimmed them down from 1.5". The nylon washers holes were 2 small, so they had to be drilled. I put 2 steel then 1 plastic washer on the bolts on underside of the circuit board to prevent damage to the heat sink fins, then 1 nylon on top side under sinks
@sTaTiiCxWaRMaCHiNe They are substitutes for the other 8 nylon washers they have in this video. Some people use 8 steel and 8 nylon. Others use all 16 nylon washers. You have to put the steel washers on the bottom of the motherboard/bolts, and the nylon on the top of the bolts.
throught the fins about 2mm damaging it noticeable, you can tell they already tampered with it and we got stuck at the part when we have to take the power botton electrical face plate off because we didnt have a t8 but we see that damage done. Could that be a factor of why his Xbox doesnt work unless he towel tricks it. Or maybe the screws are on wayyy to tight aswell ?
After installing the x clamp fix I attempted the intended overheat the only problem is that after leting it sit for 15 min and putting it back together the xbox about a second after turning it on jumps to the thought that its overheating still feeding 12 volts to the fans and flashing the two red lights (any Ideas?)
mhh i fixed it and the 3 red light are gone, but i got no picture. Sound is on, the box boots, all lieghts ok but i get no Video, got someone an idea ?
I'm so sick of this BS. I have an Xbox 360 and now a master technician because I have done everything from modding DVD drives to removing heat sinks on the GPU and CPU. None of this shit works and I'm sick of people claiming it does. It works for a short period of time the the problems always come back. Xbox's are crap. Plain and simple. Microsoft should be sued. Great idea. Anyone who has ever worked with electronics would know HEAT is a BAD thing for electronics.
@MrToolbox911 Possibly you have fried your dvd drive.. resulting in you needing a new one, inside your Dvd drive there are alot of plastic and metal parts which get hot and melt the plastic.. causing a permanent disk tray problem
Thanks for the video. My loved xbox has not done this yet but when it does i will know how to fix. Why don't you spread the paste evenly before installing the sink?
MrLlewlits 5 months ago
@MrLlewlits From building computers I can tell you that when putting the paste on usually all you need to do is put a bit in the center and the heatsink will spread it out as it is secured. However from this video it looked like he used a lot so it will definitely spread asymmetrically. That being said I can't argue with the results of the 360 working.
GaleForce218 4 months ago
@GaleForce218 I can argue with the results! I show 100% proof of background in electronic on my channel this fucker probably did not graduate High School because he is teaching you how to kill your Xbox yes it will work for a short time but it will send your Xbox to a very early grave 100%! TheKillgore521 5 months ago
hmm you must use a heat gun to reflow.. to get a real good x-clamp fix not just a fan overheat and lite silver paste its not the good way to fix a rrod sorry

Goumbush 5 months ago
@Goumbush you prolly used to many thermal paste or not enough.
Just a drop is enough.
To many: Heat transfer doesn't work propperly to many heat gets stuck in the paste wich causes it to overheat.
Not enough: The cpu/gpu overheats to fast because there's not enough paste to transfer the heat.
Killgore521 5 months ago
@justcallmegod2 yes yes! it is an awesome thermal paste its almost as effective as artic silver 5
elborracho12345 5 months ago
I just bought a kit on ebay with 'stars' thermal paste, is this considered to be a good thermal paste? Otherwise i might go out to buy some better paste before i start the repair!
justcallmegod2 5 months ago
I fixed my son Xbox like this, but I spread the thermal compound thin and even on the gpu and cpu. The reason why the error occurred in the first place was because who ever built the unit used to much paste and it eventually created a heat block between the heat sink and chip for the heat to transfer and dissipate heat in the heat sinks. some people believe it is the solder joints and use a heat gun and destroy their board and components .Surface mount chips are almost always permanent bonds.
harryflocyberman 5 months ago
IT WORKED!
I followed the steps exactly how its layed out in the video,
I spent 8 Australian dollars on ebay for a new set of screws.
U just need to do drill larger holes so the screws fit through, then your pretty much set!
Use Arctic Silver 5 thermal compound < You want a good thermal paste!
Then when you've screwed everything back into place and the DVD drive and the fans are all conencted.
REMEMBER to run the xbox for 20 minutes. then turn it off to cool for 15 min.
VERY IMPORTANT!

@EmpathyDJ You need #10 washers. not ten washers. # 10 is the size of the washer. herp
And you need 8 screws 5mm thick and 10mm long. (aka 5x10mm screws). derp

Oops! I figured it out pretty quickly haha. I had forgotten to put the washers on the screws for the CPU somehow. In any case, the xbox appears to be working now although I havn't yet completely reassembled it and tried to play a game. Thanks for the advice on a quick fix and thanks for saving me $100 :D
jssignore 7 months ago
I did all this and when I got to the overheating stage, the 3 RROD turned into 2 RROD after only about 2 minutes. I turned off the xbox for about an hour (I unplugged all cables too) to let it cool down. When I turned it back on, it appears to work for about a second or two because the green lights start flashing in each quadrant, but within a few seconds 2RROD appear. Anyone know what I did wrong? Could the thermal paste not have fully melted because the overheating time was so short? Help plz!
jssignore 7 months ago
That won't repair it, the fix is only temporary, as the solder pads under the GPU/CPU crack overtime due to cheap themal paste they use from the factory. causing the board to flex and lead-free solder. The only true way to fix it is to use a wave solder station and remove the GPU and CPU, and to reball the GPU/CPU with a Stencil Template. I charge people $79 to do this with 1 year warranty. This kit in the video will only warped the board more, for maybe a 1-3 months before it break again!!
RetroPCDOS 7 months ago
@RetroPCDOS i used this to repair my friends xbox. It was having problems displaying the video, but there was no rrod (error 74 or some such). After following all the steps and finally getting it reassembled, It seemed to work perfectly fine. Fully functional. However, 2-3 weeks later it broke down again w/ the same problem. If you think ur xbox might be under warranty DO NOT TRY THIS. if you are sure that the warranty is expired and you've got nothing to lose, its certainly worth a shot.

ICRMX 7 months ago
@ICRMX what I did was screw: nylon > motherboard > nylon > metal > heat sink. This order seemed to work for me. Also, I am having the same problem as you concerning screwing the small black screws back into the exterior of the chassis. The xbox's screws don't seem to fit into the backs of the screws provided by the repair kit. I think I may try to reassemble the xbox without putting these screws back in. The chassis should still be relatively secured by the other screws.

Thanks
whitenorth 7 months ago
