  • The melody sounds familiar, but I don't remember hearing this

Percy French song before. If you search the net for Gortnamona

House, you can see the mansion where the song was written.

    Tnx 4 the lovely post.

  • for my auntie katie lorton

  • I love this.

  • The definitive version of this beautiful ballad. Remember Brendan on the radio from the early 60's.

  • Dominiquedy, You mean the late Brendan has a beautiful voice.

  • You have a beautiful voice.

  • naychud, Percy French was a very clever man, anyone who seen his story on a BBC programme a few years ago would have realised there was a hell of a lot more to French than comical, come-all-yees. Thanks for the comment naychud.

  • This song proved that there was more to Percy French than Phil theFluter`r Ball and all that sure and begorrah stuff.

  • SebbyDebb, The name O`Dowda , [Irish, O`Dubhda]

a north of Ireland name, in County Derry the Duddy name is a corrupt form of the name.

  • LOL! My last name is Dowda...I never saw another person with that name either outside my family!! ....weird.......Pretty song though!

  • The Irisher, I would agree with your comments on Brendan, I wiil look through my collection for The Pearl Fishers.

  • Brendan was probably the most underrated Irish tenor of them all. His voice was not large enough for opera, but his technique and musicality were superb. Always easy on the ears, his singing was the essence of belcanto. I had the good fortune to hear him in concert several times and talked to him quite a bit. He was a fine gentleman -- a real class act. I can't think of anyone who sings like this today; he is greatly missed. If you have it, you might post the Pearl Fishers aria. Thanks Lorgain2!

  • Thanks Terry.

  • One of the loveliest songs recorded by the late Brendan o Dowda. Thanks for all your great videos.

    Terry.

  • Thanks Maureen.

  • I love this song...in fact it is my favourite Percy French song.

  • Thanks Bill,

  • This is an especially beautiful and poignant song ... and thanks once again for the lyrics. Brendan O'Dowda's voice is tender and beautiful.

  • You are right Penny.

  • It's beautiful but very sad...

  • This song by Percy French commemorates the memory of his wife who died giving birth to their first child.

French and his wife spent the early part of their marriage in the area.

  • lovely song, Brendan's great at singing Gortnamona.
