They did it to teach them a lesson. The school was vandalized. Franklin is brand new multi-million dollar school, and some kids decided to destroy it. So the student body sat in the gym, big deal. They need to grow up and get over it. Maybe next time people won't be so stupid. Someone could have gotten crushed and died, and a few hours in a gym is not worth that. They were wrong to revolt in such an idiotic fashion. They could've gotten their point across in a more diplomatic and mature way.

I'm sorry but being held in a gym against your will is just wrong especially when no one in the gym had anything to do with it unless the criminals were in the gym which I doubt being in a gym for 2 hours in punishment. A simple announcement over the speakers or a letter home would be just as effective. Like I said, this was a poor decision by the school, teenagers will be teenagers.
