I read so many comments about who is better...Phil or Peter, Steve or Daryl, and I see the same thing in each comment. This band creates devotion and an emotional response, and has for years and years. The fact that people still care enough to defend their favorites speaks volumes. Thank you, Genesis.
That's when we see the difference between a shredder, and the amazing felling of guitarrists like Hackett, Howe, Clapton, Gilmour and so many can deliver...
@ jalphonso2 Nobody play the guitar solo like Hackett, yes. But they can do it better. Darryll can and did. @oysteinfevang: Steve's solo is for sure great, but this one here has nothing to envy it. I had emotion more than while hearing Steve's, so i guess its proper to each one of us to feel as he feels ... I have to disagree with you regarding what you write at the end, as i am 52 years old now, so i've been in the hacket phase, but Stuermer has filled his place completely.
@patallah __I Agree this solo is a very goodone but it my opinion, I like the way Hackett plays it better. I am 50 yrs old and have seen Genesis since 75 and all of Phils solo concerts and most of Gabriles solo concerts. I love them all. This is the best version Daryll plays for sure. I prefer Steves. Its all opinion but i think both are excellent but Genesis losta bit of their sound when Steve left.
There are a lot of brilliant, lighnig fast and ultra precise, drummers these days, but noone is as original and unique as Phil. Man I love that guy - Phil makes the drumkit talk!!! One of the very few drummers who created dozens of fills and grooves which are an integral part of the music - like melodies and riffs. Pure talent!!!
Sorry guys, Darryl's version lacks all of Steve's musicality and understanding of this piece. Have seen this live with Darryl, and was also disappointed then. Technically, Darryl is good. But if you listen to Steve, not a single note is negligent. Every single note is like sung by a singer, with deep emotion behind the expression. This is just as important in the fast licks, and it's a shame that Darryl doesn't seem to understand this. That's why Steve will be remembered, and Darryl forgotten...
@oysteinfevang True, but I think it also has to do with Daryl not wanting to imitate Steve (who was such an integral part of the Genesis sound), and perhaps even a little "I show you my chops, you snobbish ignorants!" - angryness against people who dismissed Daryl as a bad choice to replace Steve (on the older live pieces that is - I never hear anyone complain about his great bass playing which usually is also more rich in notes and scales than the Rutherford studio versions).
Bummer, Phil just retired from music forever. oh and I think Daryl is one of the most underated guitarists around,, at least by the populus. listen to his work with Jean Luc Ponte. shredder!

Love the guitar work. Love the song (Firth of Fifth). Love Darryl. He rocks. But as a medley, I think it falls far short of the work Genesis did on their Three Sides Live tour. Their medleys just don't flow the way they used to. Check out the Medley that follows "In the Cage" and you'll see what I mean. They integrated 5 or 6 songs seamlessly and rocked it hard.
@sebashine this, originally, isnt a guitar solo, its a keyboard solo.. so was composed by Banks but on this version they made a guitar solo version :D. Much better imo!
@gmfagundes It was originally recorded as a guitar and flute solos on "Selling England By The Pound" ...Tony did a keyboard solo with a flute sound for early live performances after Peter left.
@gmfagundes Not entirely true. This guitar piece was always guitar, played by Hackett originally in Selling England by the Pound. But the original song also had a flute solo with the same melody. Listen to the original song from "Selling England" at about the 6 minute mark and you'll hear the guitar solo.

Daryl is a great guitarist...but this isn't true to the intention of the part except where he plays it note for note. It's a flute part composed on piano...it's supposed to be moody not fiery.
@mostlyanthony I was initially very antagonistic towards this setlist due to the exclusion of Los Endos and a couple of other favourites, but after listening to this "Old Medley", I think it's safe to say I changed my mind. :)
Hackett's version is haunting, while Steurmer's is fiery. One is not better than the other, just different. I do think the band played better on this tour than on the more recent one.
It would be great to see the classic line up at Glastonbury... Gabriel, Collins, Rutherford, Hackett, Blanks... make it happen guys, before it's too late!!!
@not3bad13 It happened at milton keynes bowl some years ago and that was brilliant, Gabriel came on in a coffin if my memory serves me right anybody else remember it?
I went to Roundhay park for this tour as well as the previous one, and genesis are IMO are one of the best live bands the world as ever seen or ever will and I've to enough gigs to know.
Yah his a very lucky guy ive already heard Steves Solo But im sorry i think that his done a very good job on this one and i guess it sounds better cos he was playin with soul :D
I am a Genesis fan from the early 70's. A drummer and a guitarist. Steve Hacket and Peter Gabrial are amateurs compared to this line up. Peter Gabriel is a cerebral self-involved not bad singer whereas Phil is a master vocalist with serious mucical chops and a sense of fun Compare records sold Phil vs. Peter. No competition. And Mike? He is a virtuoso guitarist whose carreer has been shadowed by a has been. And Chester? Well in Phil's absence there is no other. Stop whining!
@Nodders61 --with all due respect. I love all the members of Genesis and there are some songs Peter sings better then Phil and some Phil sings better then Peter. The best, is when they sing together. Their voice together is the best out there. To call Steve Hackett and Gabriel amatures is comical dude..lol
I'm a "wanna be guitarist". I wanna be, but I but am not. So , to me, I don't miss Mr. Hackett. I really never liked him. He didn't fit the band. IMO. Don't eat me alive. I love what Mike has done w/ the guitar. And he wrote so many of their songs. Thanks for uploading. I've got this on my old VHS, so it's nice to see it here. Went to the concert too.
@pleased9 I don't miss Mr. Hackett. Genesis miss Mr.Hackett. The magic of Genesis epic sound lies in the strings of his guitar. Since then Genesis were a lovely band, but a different band, playing a different music.
I love what Mike and Chester did, but the match is uneven with Mr.Hackett (and probably would with anybody else).
I had (have) the first original records that I bought when no one in the US knew who Genesis was, unless you listed to FM radio. I have never realized how much a part of the music Collins drumming was.
I'm not a musican. But that looks very hard. It is so syncopated. He is very good.
Yep, he always does. It is most likely his way to maintain focus. Tonys' keyboard work is so transparent and complex that people will notice the slightest mistake - asnd he very, very rarely makes them live.
This still gives me goosebumps. I was there in Hockenheim in the early 90's. Hearing the guitar solo in the Old Medley still is one of the strongest memories of my life (I was around six or seven years old back then).
This is Collins to me. I've always admired him for his cool drumming. Throughout all the Genesis records you can find fantastic and incredible drum rhythms and sounds. He's a good singer, too, but I'll always remember him as a great drummer.
Have to add this: even though this is not my fave solo by Daryl or the fave rendition of this song, it still beats 99% of the music out there.
Interesting factoid - Chester Thompson (the other drummer), takes a small brake starting from pretty much the second this clip starts and comes back about a second before the camera gets back on him. You can see that on the DVD which has four angles.
Sublime feeling? I love Genesis to death and enjoy both the Daryl Stuermer and Steve Hackett renditions of the guitar solo (Anthony Drennan on the 97-98 tour - not so much) but this has absolutely nothing on Hackett's version as far as feeling goes. However, what Daryl loses in the feeling department, he dominates on the speedy w*nking department. I think the best version with Daryl on the guitar is from the 81 Abacab Tour that can be found on one of the 81-83 Best Of release that's a bit rare.
I saw them in 1992 at Dodger Stadium, Ca, u.s.a. and it was THE BEST visual concert I've ever been to. Later, I would see Peter Gabriel in San Diego, Ca, in 2002 and that was just as amazing! These guys got it down!
I don't care who is best blah blah blah, just love this instrumental and its live. Wish i was there at the time, its sounds great on the Genesis live - the longs CD. Sounds even better then the studio versions of the songs
Most Genesis is even better in concert than the studio versions. Glad to hear that someone appreciates it. If you like the live versions of the old stuff, Seconds Out is great - the first tour where Phil sang lead instead of Peter and has lots of the Lamb on it...
This is a good rendition of the song because it emulates the feel without copying it. I still prefer Hackett's version, because it's more methodical and leaves a stronger impression, but this is good too.
Oh, and Hackett and Streumer are both guitar gods.
I'm sorry, but whatever you think, this guy is not the best guitarist in the world. If you can compare him to virtuosos like Paul Gilbert, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Buckethead, Micheal Angilo Batio and Bumblefoot and still think this guy is better/faster, you are in denial.
Paul Gilbert, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Buckethead, Micheal Angilo Batio and Bumblefoot
=========
only satch comes CLOSE to emulating Genesis in terms of skill. The guitar work in Genesis' music is mostly there to complement the synth, thus it sounds like anyone could play but, I know from experience that pretty much all Genesis songs are tendon-busters on the guitar.
The guitar players you name (excepting Steve Vai) are average at best. If they are so good, why do they not get called in to play on every other pop album, when the player who can get the right feel in the fewest takes is always the choice.
Dan Huff, for example, has played on everything from "My Heart Will Go On" to the solo on "Here I Go Again". The guys you listed could not even begin to compare to Huff, both in skill, nor genre hopping ability. Steurmer has also played on many albums.
Nobody ever wins these You Tube arguments because they fail to use the "infinity" response.
Perhaps I'm old school but I prefer just to enjoy these videos and not engage in silly; "My daddy can beat your daddy up!" arguments.
If you prefer one guitarist over another what's wrong with just keeping it to yourself. Maybe your daddy can beat up mine, but does it matter? Maybe my daddy didn't father an immature son who bickers about whose guitar lead is the bestest in the whole wide world ever!
@pukeandterror This bears a reply. LOVE THIS!!!!! I couldn't have said it " BESTER" myself. You can tell who is old school and who is , well, STUPID. We choose to sit back and enjoy while they waste the entire experience being fools.
i don't understand why so many genesis fans dislike daryl. i think he's awesome, and so was steve hackett. on occasion, daryl pulls something off better than steve did and if this isn't one of those occasions it's certainly close.
The original performance by Steve Hackett is one of the greatest rock solos of all time, without a doubt. Daryl, one of the most talented guitarists around played this admirably, but I certainly prefer the Hackett version. But this is a great band jam, and Daryl deserves some spotlight here. I really miss the energy of those live Genesis shows.
I totally agree steve's version is incomparable but daryl is also another guitar virtuoso $ it's hard to just recreate anoher man's solo which by the way sends me shivers through my veins everytime I hear it
I am a big fan but personally I think that D S (guitar player) wrecks a rather beautiful Hackett solo that on the original just creeps up from nowhere. This version is too in your face. Hackett was an odd rock guitar player. More of a classical musician in some ways which gave the band a different angle to some prog rock bands of the time.
wonderful that they finally play one of the great songs. some of these comments seem to miss the fact that WRITING a guitar part is more admirable than just playing it years later. ALSO, the late B.B. King once said that to play a song with passion, one needs to have a sense of economy about how many notes they play. i think Hackett more faithfully applies this concept.
how is the track called how starts at 1:25 wonderful guitar melodie. saw this concert as a little boy with my father ond VHS. love the sound of genesis and phil collins reminds me on that time
Why is Zildjian a keyword? Niether Phil Nor Chester plays Zildjian (Phil quit in 1986, Chester never did). Zildjian makes the worst, most overpriced cymbals on the market today. Sabian are the embodiment of the original Zildjians made before the 1970s. Paiste also makes great cymbals. Everything about this name and keywords are wrong.
Sabians are upgraded Zildjians. One of the brothers branched out and created Sabian. The name comes from the first two letters of each of his childen's names. Sally, Bill, and Andy.
Daryl is a damn good guitarist and bassist. The only thing I can say is that his solo here is weak. He's being too flashy when the piece calls for being understated. He's acting like he's auditioning when he already has the gig.
Well I see it a little bit different. Stuermer is actually doing a fine piece of his own style in this clip and it's more than appropiate to the way how Hackett played this part. Genesis had such a luck to find so a talented guitar player.
totally agree Daryl is and always have been an amazing player !! he stamps he's own style on this !!! and fuck me it is class !!!! i love steve hackett. always will !! so please not get into who is the best !!!! This is a class solo !!! MY Opinon !!!!
Dazzer is the luckiest guy in rock. he does not have to write or promote - just doa few gigs playing somebody else's songs and nobody would regognise him in the street - luxury!
If steve hadnt show the way first. Daryls Solo would have been seen as fantastic by many fans. Truthfully though It is (Steves solo) but played very well by Daryl
darryl plays as equal as hackett FACT

I think the best version with Daryl on the guitar is from the 81 Abacab Tour that can be found on one of the 81-83 Best Of release that's a bit rare.

If you clicked on it by mistake, you still didn't have to comment. You could have just gone to your silly primus link. Just idiotic.

Besides, primus shows up nowhere to the right here on related videos. You're full of shit.

What a beautiful way to make that guitar cry.
Reminds me a bit Comfortably Numb.

CheeKeun 3 years ago 2
Most Genesis is even better in concert than the studio versions. Glad to hear that someone appreciates it. If you like the live versions of the old stuff, Seconds Out is great - the first tour where Phil sang lead instead of Peter and has lots of the Lamb on it...
GreenEyedAngelFL 3 years ago 3
Agree with you. Don't worry they are plenty of poeple who appreciate this stuff.
miloudyt 2 years ago
This is a good rendition of the song because it emulates the feel without copying it. I still prefer Hackett's version, because it's more methodical and leaves a stronger impression, but this is good too.
Oh, and Hackett and Streumer are both guitar gods.

I'm sorry, but whatever you think, this guy is not the best guitarist in the world. If you can compare him to virtuosos like Paul Gilbert, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Buckethead, Micheal Angilo Batio and Bumblefoot and still think this guy is better/faster, you are in denial.
Mordain607 3 years ago
Oh come on, Michael Angilo Batio!? He wouldn't know where to start if you asked him to play this!
beng1lh00ly 3 years ago
add andy latimer from camel and then i'd totally agree with you.

i totally agree, but you missed out Andy Latimer from Camel

only satch comes CLOSE to emulating Genesis in terms of skill. The guitar work in Genesis' music is mostly there to complement the synth, thus it sounds like anyone could play but, I know from experience that pretty much all Genesis songs are tendon-busters on the guitar.
MagnusBruce 3 years ago
The guitar players you name (excepting Steve Vai) are average at best. If they are so good, why do they not get called in to play on every other pop album, when the player who can get the right feel in the fewest takes is always the choice.
Dan Huff, for example, has played on everything from "My Heart Will Go On" to the solo on "Here I Go Again". The guys you listed could not even begin to compare to Huff, both in skill, nor genre hopping ability. Steurmer has also played on many albums.
SessionSavant 2 years ago
Ermm... cause pop is shit? I don't thing Satch would be seen dead playing on Hannah Montana's new album...
Mordain607 2 years ago
You really believe that? Seriously, saying Joe Satriani is on par with Dann Huff is like saying a Honda Civic could drag race a Bullet.
SessionSavant 2 years ago
Nobody ever wins these You Tube arguments because they fail to use the "infinity" response.
Perhaps I'm old school but I prefer just to enjoy these videos and not engage in silly; "My daddy can beat your daddy up!" arguments.
If you prefer one guitarist over another what's wrong with just keeping it to yourself. Maybe your daddy can beat up mine, but does it matter? Maybe my daddy didn't father an immature son who bickers about whose guitar lead is the bestest in the whole wide world ever!
pukeandterror 3 years ago 8
@pukeandterror This bears a reply. LOVE THIS!!!!! I couldn't have said it " BESTER" myself. You can tell who is old school and who is , well, STUPID. We choose to sit back and enjoy while they waste the entire experience being fools.

i don't understand why so many genesis fans dislike daryl. i think he's awesome, and so was steve hackett. on occasion, daryl pulls something off better than steve did and if this isn't one of those occasions it's certainly close.
kingcrimson234 3 years ago 18
@kingcrimson234
I don't get that either. They both had/have a lot to offer, and I think Daryl's guitar solo here is fantastic.
Maryhc67 1 year ago
@Maryhc67 not bad but he is playing a copy of hacketts solo !
klnine 1 year ago
Well I must say he played it well on this one - even if its still over done its good. Later concerts show that he just can't get into it any more.

The original performance by Steve Hackett is one of the greatest rock solos of all time, without a doubt. Daryl, one of the most talented guitarists around played this admirably, but I certainly prefer the Hackett version. But this is a great band jam, and Daryl deserves some spotlight here. I really miss the energy of those live Genesis shows.
mikolasa 3 years ago 5
I totally agree steve's version is incomparable but daryl is also another guitar virtuoso $ it's hard to just recreate anoher man's solo which by the way sends me shivers through my veins everytime I hear it

I am a big fan but personally I think that D S (guitar player) wrecks a rather beautiful Hackett solo that on the original just creeps up from nowhere. This version is too in your face. Hackett was an odd rock guitar player. More of a classical musician in some ways which gave the band a different angle to some prog rock bands of the time.

As much as I respect Daryl, I agree.

wonderful that they finally play one of the great songs. some of these comments seem to miss the fact that WRITING a guitar part is more admirable than just playing it years later.

I saw these guys in 1992, Ames, Ia. They were on their game then. The 15 year break showed on the 07 tour footage, especially Phil.

SessionSavant 3 years ago 2
Sabians are upgraded Zildjians. One of the brothers branched out and created Sabian. The name comes from the first two letters of each of his childen's names. Sally, Bill, and Andy.
They're my first choice.
Genesis ~ paved the way for so many bands.

Daryl is a damn good guitarist and bassist. The only thing I can say is that his solo here is weak. He's being too flashy when the piece calls for being understated. He's acting like he's auditioning when he already has the gig.
knouraee 3 years ago
Well I see it a little bit different. Stuermer is actually doing a fine piece of his own style in this clip and it's more than appropiate to the way how Hackett played this part. Genesis had such a luck to find so a talented guitar player.
Origin18 3 years ago
I certainly agree with you on that..dude this guy is a GOD.... PERIOD

totally agree Daryl is and always have been an amazing player !! he stamps he's own style on this !!! and fuck me it is class !!!! i love steve hackett. always will !! so please not get into who is the best !!!! This is a class solo !!! MY Opinon !!!!
