I wonder what the squares in tv-land thought of this!
I happen to really love the Trout House recordings (from Grow Fins) where we hear the instrumentals unaccompanied by Beefheart vox. To hear this, one of my favourites, played with a rich full sound is different, but great. This song, one of the mostly segmental songs on TMR, has a strange logic to it that, to me, leads to the climax at 1.46, followed by reflective afterthoughts.
And it annoys me that the first name we hear is Zappa's!
@yoursaxman, no, Rockette Morton is not on Safe as Milk, neither on Strictly Personnal. Rockette Morton comes in with Trout Mask replica. Check Mark Boston on wikipedia.
John French transcribed the musical ideas Beefheart played for him on piano for the rest of the band.
on wikipedia's Beefheart scroll down to the Magic band Chapter and read John French metaphore.
The way I see it they are not playing Captain Beefheart's music and never did, it's the other way around, John French is the only musician present in all 5 first albums, Beefheart had pressed this music out of him. When John French left, the Old Fart lost his music and recorded his 2 worst albums (1974). check John French's metaphore over composing and arranging credits on wikipedia.
Near perfect performance of a classic! Amazing and intense stuff. Is there more of the Captain's material performed by this version of The Magic Band out there? Brilliant!
A little bit sloppy in places (ain't i a bitch!), but still amazing - just a superb composition.
You wouldn't get this on British breakfast TV, that's for sure! They appreciate good stuff on the continent. Mind you, i bet the presenters still talk the same kind of inane blabber...
Although this sounds a bit cleaned up (I can't quite place it), it's just made me realize how there's nothing akin to what Beefheart was doing around now. I mean, there's some great stuff (Fantômas, Xiu Xiu), but nothing like this.
By the way, Gary, do you happen to know the whereabouts of the captain. Is he alive or did he die in 2002? Why all this mist around Beefheart. Also thanks to Bill Harkleroad for all the good work he has done without being paid by Donald Vliet.
Don stands alone in all he has left to us, why do they mention Frank? FZ stands alone for the exactly the same reasons.
