  • When this guy gets to 100 I'll take him seriously.

  • my grandpa on my mom's side lived to be 90. one of my grandpa's sister on my mom's side almost made it to 100. she was about 97 or 98. my grandma would have lived longer if she hadn't been in the hospital because unfortunately she died from a bacterial disease called C. Diff. My grandparents on my dad's side are still alive and they are in their late 80's. And one of my mom's sisters died at age 60 some years old. she had brain cancer however she also was a heavy cell-phone user.

  • ANTIOXIDANTS + SEA FOOD + (7-8 HOURS OF SLEEP EACH NIGHT)!!!! AND LOTS OF CARDIO EXERCISE AND WEIGHT LIFTING.

  • I'm Adventist.

  • meh.

  • My stephdad used to get regular stemcell treatment to increase his vitality. If you ask me, it didn't do jack shit.

  • step 1: be born

    step 9938523490112476122510948:die

  • Truly inspirational.

  • @vigorousAtheist nope, that's skewes' number, and what you're talking about is not called a googleplex but a googol.

  • @trisky1234

    *googolplex*

  • the second part of this talk (at the end) is worth the wait

    the swedes are very smart

  • fabulous

  • i am 223 years old

  • if you show this in prisons i m sure they gonna break the tv sets

  • I think listening to ted talks has added about 5 years life time to my life and improved the quality of it tremendously :) Thank you

  • @cristofolon haha

  • why, in the present era would you want to live to be 100. the degeneration of the body that occurs past age 90 makes it seem like life would be pretty tough. Even with artificial organs, joints and bones would creak and ache and your brain wouldn't be in a position for an independent lifestyle.

  • But the real question is: Why the fuck would you want to live 100 years?

  • @NebojsaGrbic1990

I think a lot of people who ask this, picture you being very decrepit and weary in old age; this is not always the case. Imagine being as healthy as a fit 50 year old, all the way up until you were 85. It's possible if you have the genetics, and what this guy talks about.

  • @NebojsaGrbic1990

Personally I'm extremely curious about the technology and the world in general in the future. I want to live as long as possible to see as much as I can.

  • @NebojsaGrbic1990 For fucking more!!! Daaaa!

  • This is bullshit!. The human evovle to fit his/her new enviroment, as we did for thousands of years. The Human is not made to live for a short amount of time. Our technolgy is already giving us Artificial heart , lungs, kidneys & etc. . tought our stop age seems to be atm around 100. & its becomming easier to get to that age.

I think the human technogly will some day come to a answer where we will be able to live for 1000 years or longer.

we already have Nano, medicine, artificals.

  • @BlazeRojhat You say this is bullshit, while you give totally irrelevant "reasons" while this is bullshit. There are, in my opinion, 2 factors to living longer. 1. To find a good lifestyle, purpose, because you cannot live without a purpose. 2. The factor of technology, as you suggest. But that does not mean this presentation is bullshit. It is just another factor.

  • @BlazeRojhat Name one practical way we're using nanotechnology right now. It's science fiction You're saying he's bullshit but your answers are completely irrelevant. Humans are not evolving because we're shaping our external environments to comfort and ease our current physiology. We don't have the pressure to adapt anymore, because we don't have any pressure to survive, and unlike prehistory, the infirmed and crippled are living long enough to procreate. You're a fuckin idiot.

  • @Strand0410 dude, great argument, but you didn't have to be a dick at end. it didn't make your argument sound any better.

anyways, that part about evolution and comfort, did you think of it yourself, or did someone tell you? just wondering.

  • @lucifaitre I don't go around trying to be a jerk. But that guy fired the first shot by calling the speaker an idiot and was full of shit, when he himself was incredibly ignorant and stupid. If you don't know what you're talking about, you should have the humility to learn something, instead of attacking others, which is exactly what he did.

  • @lucifaitre Modern human evolution has stunted precisely because of those reasons. As to who taught me, I'm a physician-in-training, and had to do units on genetics (and by extension, evolution and eugenics). Even a rudimentary understanding of anatomy shows plenty of landmarks that have atrophied due to disuse, whereas they were needed in our ancestors. Wisdom teeth, coccyx, the vermiform appendix etc. Human evolution isn't moving forward, it's regressing because our lives are too cushy.

  • no1s laughing at ur jokes so stop telling them..

  • Old people gets no respect in the US. Now science shows that literally kills. When Im old im moving to China yo, fuck dis

  • So basically, to live it 100 you have to eat shitty food and live a boring life? I'll pass.

  • @Ub3rSk1llz "shitty food" becomes tolerable. not over eating is more important.. im still haviong my steaks. as for boring life, its not a boring life these people are living. the key is to be social. im pretty proud that I've managed to keep down the urge to just call you a retard and composed a reasonable comment.

  • @johndixon yeah nah shitty life shitty food. deal with it faggot.

  • You live to be 100 by celebrating your 100th birthday and knowing that you are still alive. Now enjoy your cake and ice cream, and, by the way, you can have all that you want.

  • Why would anyone want to be 100?

  • If Okinawa has 5 times the number of centenarians than the US, and we have 1/5000, they have 4 more. Those are still small odds. 1/1000.

  • Basically - nothing said was not already known - what a waste of research time and money.

  • Step 1: Start smoking

Step 2: Quit smoking- add 10 years to your life

    Repeat step 1 = Infinite life!!! :D

  • @dubraybuckeye13 complete bullshit. smoking takes away 14 years from your life. and let me just tell you i've never smoked other than one little poof from my friend's cigar in my life.

  • @ajhrockerboy6 See, its just not as funny when you try to explain/ one up the joke.

  • there is NO optimum lifestyle hey flubber should the Inuit stop eating blubber? those pagan Inuit need to get with the vegen program initiated in Mesopotamia thousands of years ago? the name of the game is NOT to preserve the carcass forever...sitting in front of a TV after recovering those 'missing years' in an old age home... is it? is the name of the game to live as long as Moses and Noah? hahaha what a joke what is more important? wjhat goes into the MOUTH or what comes out of it?
  • they stole the congestion thingy from erp in singapore

  • Very much distorted "facts" based on false case studies. Prayer not only does NOT work but it also makes you live less and deludes you. Then, wine? Come on. Ethanol fries the neurons. That's a BS anti-aging approach

  • @Neueregel you cant deny facts and proof. you are practicing what i call, delusion of grandeur from an ignorant skeptic who has absolutely no research or experience to back up his claim.

  • @hydrojin7 Yes you might live a few more years and possibly be more 'happy'(though I doubt it) if you have an "Afterlife Belief" but you will always be one more Deluded in your whole life. Something that makes you happy or makes you live longer is NOT always true. I'll choose Truth over happiness any time. Besides I'm extremely happy in finding the LOGICAL way behind some truths and by being Skeptic. Also check the mental institutions religiosity and prayer rates. Now who's the Delusional ?

  • @Neueregel First you must deem what you say is in fact true. If you base your realizations or your 'own truth' based on science, then you must quickly research the newest findings on happiness and longevity. Because science is now exponentially thriving in this particular study/research. Once you've read, researched, and digested the information from a reliable source, you must then deduce the findings with other antagonists.

    Continued...

  • @Neueregel Such as, why do people who are depressed, and essentially unhappy, have aching bodies, develop diseases in the physical, more prone to illnesses, and verified through clinical trials, have a lowered immune system? It's not Chopra, its science. On the other hand, if you were more spiritual, rather than physical as I am, you'd understand that the body was not meant to suffer for an extended amount of time. Rather it is meant to enjoy and frolic.

  • @Neueregel delving deeper, you'll notice that the TED presenter acknowledges that people who reside in blue zones usually have very tight relationships. This sociological advantage is also a key ingredient in longevity and is also proven by unbiased science. People who generally have less stress and more support, live longer than those who dont. So perhaps your truth is only what you WANT to believe in. Not the truth that will set you free.

  • @Neueregel no one will tell you, or force you to believe that you are wrong. It is your choice. As your 'truth' may not be the same 'truth' as your neighbor.

  • @hydrojin7 The only truth that objectively matters is the truth that can be VERIFIED, in a valid context build up with Logic and Rationality. Everything else is just subjective insignificant interpretations.

  • @Neueregel exactly. your truths arent verified, whereas dan buettner's is.

  • interesting^^ and the ad was interesting too. Charging you to drive to the center of Stockholm, wonder how much the charge is though

  • great clip but should maybe be entitled "how to live" full stop.. no diets, no secrets, have a purpose in life, surround yourself with the right people, take care of your family, eat a balanced diet, use your body and not machines.. obvious but often ignored or taken for granted advice..

  • women expectancy for living is older than men expectancy ?? thats confusing me, I had an information that its the other way around all along.... wtf

  • Its fear that wants me to live a healthy lifestyle. I don't want to die stupid, shirvled, diabetic, obese, and in a wheelchair...Do you?

  • interesting...

  • i am 110 years old

  • Why the HELL would you want to stay young and live "forever" what a complete utter joke! I find it hard enough I have already lived 22 years and feel I have already lived 100 years. Why on Earth would you want to live forever working everyday forever, pay bills everyday forever, most people find their jobs really stressful and life is stressful, why would you want to do that forever. If that is what you want then you are nuts!

  • @20470ify You're unhappy son. Dig life.

  • @20470ify You're unhappy son. Dig life.

  • @20470ify Maybe you should change what you do ie do something you enjoy. Life becomes meaningful and fun then.

  • @20470ify Lol bro, that is a skewed version of society that western culture gives us. Life is much more than what you just described. Actually that isn't life at all. Life begins when that becomes moot.

  • @20470ify That is the most pathetic comment I've ever seen on the net, and I've seen A LOT of stupidity written by complete morons!

Why the hell DON'T you want to live forever (or at least a healthy 100)?!? My God! Why are you alive then? Just die already! You're a waste of oxygen and a complete loser. GTFO!

  • It's very frustrating that Dan Buettner, who has done great research in the field of longevity, would perpetuate beliefs that living to 100 is nearly impossible for most people -- seemingly just for the sake of convincing people to make changes in their lives now rather than later if they want to live longer.

His intentions are fine I'm sure, but he contradicts himself in the CNN interview with Aubrey de Grey where he ties his methods in DIRECTLY with de Grey's methods on the REVERSAL of aging.

  • I don't want to live to be 100! What a dreadful thought.

  • @MyMeemers When do you want to die?

  • @MyMeemers thats fine do what you want eat mcdonalds apartame fluoride etc.

  • @hoikevinhoi Aspartame.

  • @MyMeemers Well then, want to live to be 200. Don't you want to see how it all comes out?? Curiosity is a huge motivator.

  • This guy might be our only hope for a Michael Scott replacement.

  • @serenecelene HARDEN UP!!!! WHY do you want to live forever anyway, party hard smoke em up you know the story! All my Great Gandparents lived into their 90's and they smoked partied hard all their life, I don't smoke but like living life in the fast lane. You are one day older than yesterday, "WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO ABOUT IT LOL"

  • Stockolm rocks!

  • Why do people right so much?

  • I'm sorry but I had to leave a second comment, this is just such a horrible talk, he talks nonsense for most of the time and his conclusions are also nonsense

How long you live, assuming your lifestyle doesn't take away any years, is determined by your biology, not whether you belong to a religious group or you mix your cake batter by hand and whatever other nonsense he said. Really is one of the most senseless talks on TED, and believe me I've seen a LOT of talks on TED.

  • This is the worst talk on TED, first the speaker is a douche bag, also his solutions for living long are all the old things your grandma told you about that doesn't affect biology in any way.

OMG what a surprise he mentions Omega 3 fatty acids, polyphenols, god, sunshine, and friends.

If you want a serious discussion on longevity look up Dr. Aubrey De Grey, or visit sens dot org

In fact for me Dr. Grey's talk is showing up on the sidebar called "Why we age and how we can avoid it"

  • I got a backup body growin in a test tube in my basement.

  • Someone tell this guy to please stop telling jokes.

  • the american dream is retirement

  • A worker or soldier ant? 98 days? How many days do ants live?

  • The idea that you have to be happy to live a long life is erroneous. My grandfather had a stormy marriage for over 50 years. He was a raging alcoholic and essentially a broken man after WWII. He also lived to be 91.

  • I am 106

  • Its not the amount of years in the life, but the amount of life in the years

  • exellent

  • my theory is.....keep busy ...don't get too stagnet ...and irregardless of what you eat....Do Not overeat (my problem)

  • this ass hole is definitely a FAKE!!!

  • @fonezoneman The point of these talks is to get people engaged.. To make people change their viewpoint, to get people interested and make them want to pursue the information. He talked for 15 minutes, do you think he had time to put in all the data? Even if he did have time, you would be dumb to blindly believe him. You obviously miss the point of scientific discourse. You are an idiot.

  • he talks about science a lot - and gives peripheral examples - but doesn't give any solid data on his own claims

  • @MultiJasonJasonJason Okay.. But the point of these talks is to get people engaged.. To make people change their viewpoint, to get people interested and want them to pursue the information. He talked for 15 minutes, do you think he had time to put in all the data? Even if he did have time, you would be dumb to blindly believe him. You obviously miss the point of scientific discourse.

  • awkward laugh at 11:49

  • Anybody else hear how he says "seven" ? total lisp

  • At about 6:20 - "It's called Kananow?"

  • @EgaoNoGenki

thats strange I was wondering the exact thing.

I was just debating with someone talkin about wine and is it good or bad

  • my ant is 98 and she eats fast food ever day

  • @brianlita1 And now she's dead.=P I thought ants only had a lifespan of a few months. A 98 year old ant that's crazy! Are you 6 years old? Sorry I am drunk and just wanted to point out the fact that my spelling and ability to form syntactically proper sentences is not lost. You, on the other hand, are an idiot.

  • Its not true what he said about possible treatments. Many similarities the centenarians in that video have, can also be reached with different food additions, and have been profen to work with animals. It just needs a lot more time to proof in humans. 1 of that stuff is Resveratrol, which curses an effect that helps repairing damaged dna. You also get that effect when you are on a strong carloric restriction, like the people in Okinawa are.

  • He sounds exactly like Steve Carell

  • @pasmaan He also sounds Canadian.

  • @pasmaan I thought the exact same thing when this video started in a new tab.

    "Steve Carell's at TED Talks?"

  • ....I think I'm going for a walk and moving up north now.

  • Prairies of Minnesota.....I live in MN, and lemme tell ya....no one lives there that wasn't born there decades ago. Most people live in the Metro areo, the rest in Brainerd and Duluth.

  • 100+ people is almost always from a little town, why? because they dont eat the shit we eat, they dont eat aspartame, fluoride, whopers, bigmacs, cocacola, poisonous vaccines...

  • @bestplugins and i forgot about genetically modified food, fuck Monsanto.

  • @bestplugins Wrong. More like inbreeding spreading around those few genes that affect longevity. What we're basically seeing is that it all comes down to genes, except for caloric restriction, which may or may not work in humans.

  • none of them exercise..ahem. what about the guy who starts his day with a swim and the woman who uses weights and an exercise bike every morning...?

  • @mert1264 Good eye.

  • that is crazy her great great great grand-daughter!

  • Very interesting

  • "Procreative Success" has me concerned. Nontheless, I'm going for more than 12 extra years!

  • fuck this mother fucker hes an asshole he talks lots of shit he says that reversing aging is not possible nothing is impossible scientists can achive anything its a matter of time maybe not today but one day

  • @arginolympia It doesn't take the scientific method to figure out why punctuation is important.

  • @arginolympia 'is not possible' is not 'will never be possible'

  • Free range pork is pretty good and full of omega 3 fatty acids. Especially if the pigs grew up eating a steady diet of fish, avocados, walnuts and olive oil.

  • @kennethj1956 I wonder if we can eat fish, avocados, walnuts and olive oil instead of the pork itself?

  • @kennethj1956 is that what pigs are fed?

  • Hey Spudskie! Another guest on Johnny Carson over the years was an elderly man, in his 90's, who had eaten a hotdog a day his entire life. I loved Johnny's show. No one like him since.

  • Diet, exercise, recreation and rest.

  • this guy's voice sounds EXACTLY like michael scott's, lol

  • @summerguy03 Cannot unhear it.

  • These aren't "rules", it's really just common sense. Choose to eat healthy food, put down the fork, push away from the table, and go for a walk.

  • Do you want to live 100+ years if you have to live your life by these "rules"?

  • @GWSteffen yes lol.

  • Is it worth living for 100 years if you have to follow these "rules"?

  • @GWSteffen what does it matter? these rule help the QUALITY of life....so might as well follow these "rules" regardless if u feel that its worth living for 100 years or not

  • Excellent video! Expert advice! You should upload your video to Ewisdomtv

  • Clearly if you want to live much longer than 100 then you need to under go GENETIC ENGINEERING. Not just eat well exercise well and hope. Of course the genetic option will only be available to elites, and the general public will continue to be hit with harmful toxins and vaccines with cancer viruses...

  • @sonofhendrix

You could always choose not submit to these vaccines. You could also have the full power of your DNA activated. I'm just saying.

  • wait wait wait... Do you stop at 20% full stomach, or 80%?

  • 80%

  • 140%... still fit though.

  • @masktheend 80% I think he just misspoke.

  • Most of this is good information, however some of it requires decoding and more analysis. For example, you have to take in to account the toxicity of your environment and your food. If you eat a conventional, pesticide, irradiated, plant-based diet, you're probably SOL. Be careful...

  • this is now not ten or 50 years ago

  • American are imprison in a pyramid society. The life of a battery is not important. The question is, Can this battery give off the temporary energy to maintain and build upon the pyramid?. In America the goal is to politic progression in humanity, and this progression is welfare to social affair. Extracting the people energy to create property/wealth in exchange for money which is just a fraction of wealth. They don`t have a plan, so they have a plan to fail. WHAT IS YOUR QUALITY OF LIFE?.

  • what up steve!

  • hey buddy. nice to see you in the same info.

  • @SteveXnycperformance my friend I'm not sure I'm getting you hear. Please simplify it or use another example, and I;m not trying to be sarcastic. It really sounds interesting to me..

  • @SteveXnycperformance Wow, a whole paragraph of utter bullshit. Congratulations my friend. You blow hot air like no other.

  • @subtleSteppes Takes one to know one.

  • The "solution" is called PRIVATE ROADS you communists

  • nice vid

  • Who has anything better? The people are smiling, laughing, having fun, and seem happy. I like that path.

Finding common denominators woking in different cultures speaks.

And 9 Common Points Seem To Work.

The wine thing has been proved by others.

Building an everyday life style that supports happy people and a longer life is for me.

Thank you. And thanks poseidon for the spelling lesson. I did not know and wanted to. Allows me to look further.

  • For starters, I don't like his presentational style; he sounds like the worst kind of motivational speakers. (Not that there are any good ones though...)

Also, it would be really interesting to hear what Buettner, Ray Kurzweil and Aubrey DeGray think of each other's ideas regarding longevity.

  • Do you eat to live or live to eat?

  • this video seems a bit dated. We know that the DNA telemeres are huge factor in cell replication. It seems that "aging" is linked to a shortenning of the telemeres. And that the telemeres are important to allow for more consistantly, accurate cell replication. There are already some promising understanding on how the telemere can be relengthened. Look it up.

  • @upcycle telOmeres

  • @eyhexs Thanks ;)

  • Ah I listened again and he said what I just said. It's one generation of usefulness

  • Evolution doesn't completely stop after having children, human children are quite dependent on elders and their experience

  • Simpliest and most obvious way to slow down aging, inject aged organs with fresh non-aged cells, made from your own stem cells, after a while fast breading new cels will replace the old ones.

    1.Go to clinic.

2.Say: take my marrow stem cells and that 10000$ and clone me some liver cells!

    3.Wait a month.

    4.Get your stem-shot.

    5.Repeat 1-4 for other organs.

6.Save some money fror your kids to do the same.

Oh wait. Stem cell reaserch is illegal in most countries. So we are all pretty much dead by 81.

  • Longevity? I was expecting immortality but then again I can wait another 50 years till someone figures that one out.. I mean 80 years if i start my omega 3 diet and join a religious faction. Thanks I love tedtalk.

  • Great Video!

  • If you didn't want to see what he has to say, or you're in a hurry. You can skip to 17:59

  • Watching the video there are some small things we can do. Seems to me most important is purpose, social constructs, diet. I like it. Not as hard. In order to have a long quality life we must study what is important then apply. "An apple a day keeps the doctor away." What if that is true? Easy to do, easy not to do.

  • I've meet many 100 yrs old...The think they all had incommon was genes working in their advantage.

Since there's no one factor that will assure long life...In my family we live a long life, I only would wanna reach 100 if i can have my health and be aware of things, have a sense of quality in life and not be a package in a nursing home.

Americans have their life style to blame for all health reasons.....Great video!

  • This talk is one of the many reasons I love watching and learning from TED talks.
