Nintendo DOES acknowledge the CD-i Zelda games as official parts of the series. In an issue of Nintendo Power, a letter in the mail column asks if The Faces of Evil and The Wand of Gamelon count as official Zelda games due to an argument on what constitutes as a complete collection.

The reply was that yes, the CD-i Zelda games ARE part of the official series but congratulates the collector for only getting the ones where "Link didn't look like he swallowed a gallon of drain cleaner."

I think they define that as are legal versions of the Zelda franchise, because they'd be breaking copyright law if not.

No Nintendo representative from Japan (especially Shigsy) has ever mentioned/confirmed them as part of the lineage.

Nevertheless, it IS an acknowledgment of their existence by someone writing on behalf of Nintendo. It's American-made, Nintendo most likely wants nothing to do with these games, and neither do a lot of other people (including the press), which is probably why the Japanese representatives never talk about it.

I know that Miyamoto cares for his series very much, like they were children, so I can definitely see where his reluctance to talk about these games comes from.
