I was just watching the NFL draft and as a rugby player I was suprised at how small most of them were. 6'1 and 190 - 200 pounds seemed to be the norm. Thats about the size of Dan Carter, one of the smalles for the All Blacks. Some NFL players may be big but I cant imagine any the size of Richie Mcaw, 6'4 and 112kgs running 10 - 13kms during a match as he regularly does. Most of them come of the field puffing after a 20 second play.

Those are just recievers and defensive backs who cover them. Out of the 22 players on a field at one time usually only 8 are that size. The remaining 14 are all 245+ pounds.

Don't underestimate the safetys, even if they are only 210-220. They kill you if you run across the middle of the field.

Yea some aren't that big. Just depends on the position they play. I noticed in Rugby they're all pretty decent size though. Some smaller in height but still pretty bulky. AFL they're all a bunch of stringy looking dudes.

It has less to do with the pads and more with how Football is played. A football tackle is not as technical as a rugby tackle so the tackle in football is much more violent.
