so quiet.... i've switched from k10d to d200, aiming for d7000 probably, because of ISO noise in K10d (at ISO1600 there is no way to make a good photo in a church)... But when i hear the k10d or k7, i wish to have such a quet mirror and shutter in nikon...
@relent107luke Who knows? :D Nikon D3 can fire 9 fps with full frame and with DX crop mode it can fire 11 fps. Maybe it shoots just 5,0 fps so it would not be so overpowered next to K-7, which is very good camera too
So, whats the point ? Both cameras are of a different class in most aspects, but I'll go the Pentax thanks. If you'd like to compare Nikon to Pentax compare the Nikon D3000 and the Pentax KX, Both entry level, Both very similar price, both differ very much. the Nikon is bascally over priced compared with the Pentax. Yes Nikon are one of the best in the market but also one of the most expensive. Go pentax !
Just listened to my one year old K-7 and recorded the sound, then measured it against this. My K-7 is a little bit faster than this, and also a little bit faster than the D3 just like the specs say. Five consecutive cycles (same stage) are 0,77 seconds apart on my K-7, 0,79 seconds on the D3 if this video reproduces it correctly.
I haven't Pentax K7, but I have tried the the real K7 on sale, which is more faster than this. THIS VIDEO is taken in a Nikon stand to put on value D3. Really pathetic...
I haven't Pentax K7, but I have tried the the real K7 on sale, which is more faster than this. THIS VIDEO is taken in a Nikon stand to put on value D3. Really pathetic...
Thoses DSLRs are in completely different leagues. First of all, the Nikon D3/D3x/D3s is a professional grade full frame (35mm) digital single lens reflex camera whilst the Pentax K-7 is - despite being Pentax' most advanced DSLR at the time of writing - a semi-professional model. There is also a huge price difference between the bodies: Nikon [$3800] vs Pentax K-7 [$1050]. Both are excellent photographic tools, just aimed at different consumers imo (:
I've never seen such a fixed test as this, the K7 is obviously low on battery power compared to the fully charged battery of the Nikon. Now don't tell me Nikon is actually shatting themselves because Pentax have finally started bringing out high quality DSLR's and they're worried it's going to affect their sales. I first bought the K10 3 years ago and it was a great camera, I've just now upgraded to the K7 and it's superb. Also the K7 has won Camera of the year 09 on a number of camera websites
Why do people argue about which company is better than which? As long as you use the camera + equipment right then you don't have to worry about that stuff. Lots of professional photographers haul around Nikon, Canon, Olympus, etc gear at the same time.
For most of the K7 is great SLR and #1choice. Why would someone compare highest end professional SLR (D3) to the (K7)?unless nikon fans feel threatened? Continuous Shooting K7 das shoot 5-5.2f/s.(we tested).-if u wanna make movies-switch to movie mode Bottom Line!!the D3 sensor is 36x24mm!!! and K7 is 23.4x15.6mm!!anyone who know about digital photography knows that sensor size and lens!! is your quality!
If u making serious living with photography u buy $5000 nikon, I got K7 and it rocks!
If you're serious about photography buy a PENTAX K-5 and you'll be happy with Image quality specially in LOW LIGHTING condition where clients are annoyed with too many flashes , flash there, flash here and everybody getting angry.
The number of frames that can be taken is defined by the size of the buffer where images are stored before they are processed (in case of a before image processing buffer) and written to the storage card.
The pentax sounds way quieter. I'd rather have a quiet camera than a fast camera. Who cares if it shoots 10 fps? It's just more identical pictures to sift through in the computer. 5fps is plenty. If i wanted really high fps, i'd get a video camera.
I have the K20d and love it. I got an amazing pentax 50mm 1.4 for $250 and two amazing vintage Pentax lenses from eBay for $100 each!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
The point of the test was to see if Pentax was lying about their camera being 5.2fps, and they were. 5fps is 5fps regardless of how much you pay for it.
"LYING" HOW STUPID DO YOU THINK COMPANY IS ABOUT LYING.
Or Do you mean to say that K-7 is not good enough to your $5,000 .
If you put CANON 50D side by side with K-7 at least i might believe that your intention is COMPARISON but at least maybe you got paid to to this... so i understand.
A second is the same amount of time regardless of how big a shutter may be, so four frames per second with a tiny 4/3 shutter should move exactly as fast as a medium format shutter at that speed, or in this case, an APS shutter should move exactly as fast as the full frame shutter of the D3 if they are both doing 5fps. How do you not understand this? Are you mathematically retarded or something?
People, their comparing the burst speed of the two cameras, not the actual cameras themselves. The Nikon D3 has an actual 5.0fps burst speed when selected, so they were seeing if the K-7 truly had a 5.2fps burst speed, whic, apparently, it doesn't.
Nice, they're comparing a Pentax APS-C to a Nikon full frame. Very impressive. Pentax must be using alien technology in order for them to compare those side by side.
CMOS > (is greater than) APS > APS-C >CCD. Correct? Correct me if I'm wrong-- You're saying in your post that Nikon is the (much) better camera b/c it's writing to memory ALL that data from the full-frame CMOS compared to the Pentax being a hair slower with a much lighter load of data. Am I right?
The K7 is impressive as a prosumer model. I LOVE the weather-resistant feature set. A good photog should be able to take a great pic with either model.
CMOS isn't technically better than CCD. That's basically comparing apples to oranges. Most DSLR manufacturers are switching over to CMOS now because it's less costly to manufacture and contains less circuit lines, therefore the data has less lines to transfer through so it'll transfer "faster". But CCD has better low iso noise levels. I think the Nikon D3 sounded faster because it has a louder shutter sound. After all D3 is a 5,000 dollar camera vs the 1,3000 K-7. So D3 is bound to be "better".
Yeah, no wonder faster and faster cameras are appearing on the market like mashrooms after rain. We got a 24 megapixel Sony doing 5fps, which wouldn't be possible with a CCD sensor. Also, I agree that CCD sensors have lower noise levels. I would make an analogy to engines here. CCDs are like gasoline, not economical, but high performance. And CMOS are like diesel. They are good for different things. It'd be nice to have a choice though, and not be stack with CMOS only for the future...
The Pentax K7 is a advance DSLR, the Nikon D3 is a profissinal full frame camera. It is like comparing two diferent worlds. Pentax is a robust, well build, weather resistant camera. Excelent image quality, excelent handling. Build like a tank the K7 features all you need in an advance camera.
The Nikon D3 is Stunning in all aspects, but it is a profissional camera and it was created for that purposes
Both are speacular cameras but are...two diferent worlds.
Nikon- noisy & over hyped, lousy customer support! that's the reason I switched to Pentax and I HONESTLY couldn't be happier - great customer service! they cleaned my sensor for free when I had 1 week left on the year warranty. It didn't need fixed, just cleaned! THANKS PENTAX!
I've recorded not only this clip of K-7's FPS and i've discovered that is about 4 frames/second, not 5,2. The Nikon D3 has trully 5 fps on the record.
Both Canon 40D and Canon 50D have soft images even after pushing the sharpness settings. Who cares the 6.3 fps but with soft images...That is how Canon convinced the people for years by hiding the noise behind their those soft images. Image quality wise only and maybe Canon 5D can come close to the Pentax K20D's image quality at landscapes. At higher ISOs, I admit that Pentax line is not a class leading camera but I can live with that.
You are wrong about the 40D. The IQ is great (I know because I have a 40D).
I like the K20D. It produces very good images as well, with excelent performance at higher ISOs. It is slower than the 40D. So what? The lenses are cheaper (and also very good) and the K20D has shake reduction (which is a considerable advantage).
There is no reason to pretend that other cameras have some flaws like "soft images".
eieu - The image quality is great according to what and whom ? There is a softness issue at Canon 40D and 50D and the images are not sharp. I do not see the same 3D effect at Canon 40D images even with L lenses in compare to the ones you get from Pentax K20D. In my previous comment, I do not have any complain about high ISO performance of Pentax. I only wrote that it is not class leading. Read carefully !
My 40D doesn't have this softness problem, even when I select the "portrait" mode (sharpness 2). A few days ago I could compare the 40D to the K20D and the only significant differences are the resolution and the colors. The K20D produces sharper images but with some sharpening artefacts (I could get similar results easily with my 40D).
eieui - I fully disagree. The 40D images has no where near the Pentax image quality once you shoot in raw format. Obviously our tastes are quite different and I really don't see any point to spend effort and time to convince you. Go and get your similar results. I really do not care.
Why does it matter what camera you use to take the picture you want? Both are fully capable dSLRs that produce great results under different conditions.
You'll look like a fool if you try to tell Picaso that you can make better artwork just because you have a better and more expensive paintbrush.
I like how all camera manufacturers claim these high FPS but if you try and count 5 clicks in 1 second you will realize that the frame rate is more like 3 fps (although my k20d which is rated at 3 fps is more like 2fps
Play the video a few times and you will notice that the 3rd time the K7 button was pushed that the speed is slower than the first time it was pushed. I suspect that the batteries are almost dead on the K7.
While you guys argue about 0.2 FPS, I'll go take some photos.

I like how all camera manufacturers claim these high FPS but if you try and count 5 clicks in 1 second you will realize that the frame rate is more like 3 fps (although my k20d which is rated at 3 fps is more like 2fps

Actually, K-7 frame rate was measured at more than 5 fps while K20D frame rate was more like 2.7 fps.

Wrong. My camera, K10D; does actually have 3FPS :P Not hard to test. Count the K-7 here, it's correct.

Play the video a few times and you will notice that the 3rd time the K7 button was pushed that the speed is slower than the first time it was pushed. I suspect that the batteries are almost dead on the K7.

I think D3 here is in "lo" mode, so that it shoots @5fps, certainly a little more
